Funny you should mention it but I too have a love/hate (or hot/cold) relationship with fighting games. I remember liking Mortal Kombat for its' story line but shelved in shortly after beating it. Blazblue & Streetfighter 4? I simply got tired of buying what I thought was the most current version only for a new edition to come out later. Persona 4 Arena? Great fighting game with many of my favorite characters but I almost wish it had been a co-op beat em up or a continuation of the rpg it's based on instead. (Well, it is a continuation story wise. What I meant was I rather it be an rpg expansion sort of thing.) King Of Fighters 13 reminded me of awesome fighters akin to Garou Mark Of The Wolves and SF 3rd Strike so it's one of my favorites. (And even then I don't play it as often as I should) Soul Calibur 4 & Tekken 6 likewise gave me a lot for my money but they've been collecting dust all the same.
Growing Away From Fighting Games

The first game I ever played was Street Fighter II Turbo on Super NES.
I was 4, and it was a revelation to me. I loved cartoons and anime; being able to direct the characters in battle put me into the action in a way I'd never imagined. Since then, fighters have taken top priority for me. I've played tons of them in the past 2 decades, and in every generation they've been the deciding factor for the console I've bought.
Except the coming gen, at least.
Infamous: Second Son, Killzone: Shadowfall and Final Fantasy XV are the next gen games I'm interested in. Killer Instinct looks cool, but I'm not getting a Xone just to play that. As for the current gen, I've been putting a lot of time into Soul Sacrifice, Sonic Generations and Muramasa Rebirth, while my collection of fighters on PC and the Vita collect dust.
Fighting games are brutal and unforgiving to learn at a high level. Unlike FPS games, the skills you learn don't carry over that well from one fighting game to another. Each has it's own intricacies, mechanics, and balance issues that have to be dealt with. Then there's the fact that I don't know anyone who plays fighting games as much as I do, and playing online doesn't do much for me. Assuming that the game in question HAS good netcode to begin with.
I've been focused on single player games I can go through at my own pace. Stuff that doesn't require learning 1-frame link combos or mastery of spacing to play decently. I was never that good at fighters to begin with, and I've lost interest in re-learning how to play each of these fighters to get the most out of them. I've been getting a lot more out of watching top players in tournament streams than playing the games myself lately.
But who knows? Maybe a new fighter will come out that will change my mind. As it stands, though, I've never been as uninterested in playing them as I am now.
Are there any genres that you used to love that you aren't as into now? Let me know in the comments.
