If you’re a survival horror fan up to date on things you already know about Cry Of Fear. However, for those who don’t know about this excellent HalfLife 1 Mod I feel as if it’s my obligation as a gamer to tell them!
There is much about Cry Of Fear that reminds me of Silent Hill. Everything from depressed loner Simon’s spoken dialogue in the beginning to the grainy film effect that permeates the whole game gives me a dull ache of terrified and bewildered nostalgia. Environments are urban, creepy, and occasionally labyrinthine. It’s also recommended you keep a piece of paper handy to write down clues and numbers.(Admittedly “tab” can access most tidbits of info you’ve acquired but a few of them have to be remembered or written down by hand.) Hey, remember when problem solving was a huge staple of the survival horror genre and you couldn’t handle every obstacle by filling it with bullets? Well, Cry Of Fear is definitely keeping things real in that department and kicking it old school!
My main problems have been I simply suck at Half-Life sometimes. For example, it took me a ridiculous long time to climb a series of wooden beams to get up to an apartment. Most Half Life veterans will tell you it’s best to look at the narrow surface you’re walking along as it seems to keep your movement trajectory going smoothly. It took me awhile to remember this. Once I did I had very few recurring problems.
Unlike Amnesia, Cry Of Fear does allow you to fight back. You start the game with a knife but soon you will also acquire a hand gun and other nifty items. Monsters actually take awhile before making their first appearance. There’s a rather lengthy section in the beginning of the game where you’re simply roaming around the back alleys of a town at night while trying to find a padlock combination. The atmosphere throughout is tense and unsettling because you’re there alone and the music is so ambient and haunting. Aka, this section manages to be scary without throwing a single creature at you. When designers can do this you can tell they have a firm grasp on what horror truly is.
Another helpful gadget is your i-phone. It can be used to light your way and you get helpful messages on it. It’s a clever way of making the setting feel modern and it is a much better assistance tool than the standard flashlight.
Sure, I suppose I could moan about “dated graphics” and “stiff animations”. On second thought, fuck that noise! This brilliant masterpiece was done with the Half-Life mod by a small dedicated group of gamers. They didn’t have AAA resources at their disposal. All things considered, they did magnificently! Cry of fear doesn’t even come off as “a half life mod”. It really feels like its’ own distinct game and that is an accomplishment in and of itself.
Beyond all this a standard campaign run is 8 hours and there are multiple endings. Additionally yes, there is a multi-player mode. (I just haven’t touched it) And what is the going rate on Steam? It’s free. Yes you read this correctly. It’s free! Download it today and thank me for being awesome!
I remember getting irritated by some of the environmental puzzles in Half Life and the second one. Duke Nukem Forever had a lot of that sort of thing. I also remember that it was the first time I had ever seen Open GL. I played it on the normal settings for so long, and when I figured you could switch over it blew me away! I'm definitely gonna download this. Thanks Ben!
The environmental puzzles aren't so bad,Aaron. So far they've been rather "common sense" affairs. For example, I had to enter a guy's user name and password to access his computer for a padlock number.
No ridiculous RE-styled puzzles just yet! (Why did we have to move around statues in a police station? What police station does that?)
Curse you Half Life! Why did a mod have to be made with you as the prime program to create such an interesting game. Though i'm not much of a PC gamer, I'm slowing coming to terms that perhaps the PC is one of the few places where I can get my survival horror fix. Too bad it's on a game that I hate to the very depth of my SOUL!!!
It is a good reason. Cry Of Fear is hard in places though. I think I migght have to start from the beginning to do better. I saved at an area where I have low health and there's not a single healing syringe in sight! I'm also being pursued by creepy ghost women who can make me commit suicide if I'm holding a gun. You have to take them out quickly or press the trigger button really fast.
