BaD 25: Was Also Meant to Be Bigger

But I tried to save it on here and when I got logged out after the attempt and logged back in, it was gone, and I hadn't even copy/pasted! Cry My fault. Also lost my renewed "About Me" section stuff. Oh well.

Luckily for me, it was just a recap of Oscar night with as many game references as possible (joke blog, basically, at one point I suggested Daniel Day Lewis play Solid Snake and sneak around in a giant top hat), and since the Oscar theme was "music in movies" and tomorrow is "Tunes Tuesday," I'll just post that tomorrow. Cool

It wasn't happening today, as I once again slept until 5pm when work didn't call me in, and have 100 more blogs from 1up to archive. Home stretch, baby! In the process, I've found a couple large blogs I'd never published, blogs about concerts I attended (hell, pretty much all of them, from Ozzfest 2007 to the Alanis Morissette concert last year), blogs that were literally placeholders for other blogs, blogs that make me want to smack my younger self (LOTS of 'em), and the reason I've been logging all 500 instead of cherry picking is for just those reasons: it's cool to have an honest time capsule of what I was like, and how it shows in my writing. There was a blog from '07 where I talk about these "newfangled movie vending machines!" Ha!

But, I figure, as one of 1up's resident cinephiles, I'd recap my thoughts on the Oscars anyway:

Host: I knew I'd love Seth McFarlane. Since he knows how to sing Big Band style, and even has albums nominated for Grammys in that style, he brought a lot of classic style along with his raunchy humor, as I expected.

Best Picture: I'm glad Argo won, even though my favorite was Silver Linings and I thought it would win. Having seen all but Amour, they were all great in their own way

Best Director: I still feel Kathryn Bigelow should have won, thought she was snubbed, but Ang Lee is a fantastic director... if his editors could just say no to the long middle sections of his movies.

Best Actor: I wanted Joaquin Phoenix for the master, but we all knew it was going to DDL for Lincoln, and deservedly so.

Best Actress: I both wanted Jennifer Lawrence to win, and figured she would, but it would have been awesome if Quevenzhane Wallice had been the youngest actress ever to get it (nin years old); she was amazing in Beasts, I kind of wish it had been a tie, really.

Best Supporting Actor: I wanted Christoph Waltz for it, but was not expecting he win, considering how soon he had already won for Inglorious Basterds, but hey, all nominees had been awarded in the category before, and it was a pleasant surprise to me.

Best Supporting Actress: I still thought Amy Adams was head and shoulders above the rest, but Anne Hatheaway did have a great, if short performance, and she was expected to win, so that didn't bother me.

Best Animated Feature: Were they going by best animation and best soundtrack for this? If so, I agree with Brave winning. Were they doing it for overall movie, including story? If so, I thought Wreck it Ralph had vastly superior characters and story, but it's subjective, so to each their own.

Cinematography: I wanted Skyfall, but no surprise it went to Pi, and well-deserved.

Costume Design: Even though Anna Kerenina and Mirror, Mirror were the only ones I hadn't seen, by the trailers, I figured Anna Kerenina would get it; I was right

Documentary Feature: I was surprised, excited, and pissed when I saw that Searching for Sugar Man won. I had it at first, just cause it was the only one I'd seen, then thought 5 Broken Cameras or Invisible War would get it for their more serious subject matter. I love Rodriguez's music, though, and it was a good doc, so glad they won, even if I lost lol.

Documentary Short: Based on trailers, since I hadn't seen them, I wanted Inocente to win. G;ad it did, and that the girl is no longer homeless.

Film Editing: I had Zero Dark Thirty for both editing categories, but Argo won.

Sound Editing (Tie): I had Zero Dark Thirty, but I also had Skyfall at one point, so I guess the Academy agreed with both my choices Cool

Foreign Langauge Film: I thought War Witch and No looked way more interesting, but I haven't seen any of these, and Amour was expected to win, so no surprise there.

Makeup/Hairstyling: I voted Hitchcock, even though it was the only nominee I'd not seen, but Les Mis was good, too. REally, so was Hobbit, but Jackson has enough freakin' Oscars. lol

Original Score: I'm a sucker for John Williams, so I had Lincoln, but Life of Pi had a great score, too. Well deserved again.

Original Song: Everyone saw this coming and it was my personal favorite, especially since they got away from having male singers for opening Bond songs. Blech! I liked the songs themselves, but when I think Bond, I think sultry female singer with stripping sillhouette women, not Chris Cornell mumbling over a bunch of guys fighting on cards.  "Skyfall" by Adele is one of my favorite Bond songs, along with "Live and Let Die" and "The World is Not Enough."

Production Design: I had Anna Kerenina for this, but should have switched to Lincoln, as I figured it might win. Dammit.

Short Film Animated: Paperman was the only one I saw (plays before Wreck it Ralph), but honestly, based on trailers, it was my favorite anyway. Glad it won.

Short Film Live Action: I had Asad based on trailers, cause I thought they'd pick t, but my actual favorite based on trailers was Curfew, which won. Dammit.

Sound Mixing: Went to Les Miserables, which was a well-deserved given.

Visual Effects: Life of Pi won for damn good reason; it was close with this and Avengers, but Life of Pi's believable CGI blew me away ... in 3D! (Yeah I still kind of wish I'd been able to see it in 2D, but still a masterpiece for visual effects)

Adapted Screenplay: Wanted and expected Argo, and it won. Good deal.

Original Screenplay: I wanted Moonrise Kingsom to win, but well-deserved and expected, Django Unchained.

darn I haven't seen any of these movies except Avengers and Django.  And I used to love movies!  I guess I just don't have the patience for them anymore, too passive for me.

I am in the same boat as Snee here.  I used to make it a point to see all the best picture nominees every year.  I have seen none of these and might see one of those listed sometime in the next two years.  I used to LOVE movies and now I watch about four annually.  I made a big exception to see Die Hard 5, though.  Can't ignore the classics-to-be.

I've been hearing Die Hard 5 was one of the worst. I love the first two, but reviews kept me away from that one.

Of course, apparently it's still a good action flick, just not really a "Die Hard'y" Die Hard movie, so I might catch it on Red Box.

It is not one of the best.  All I will say is that it was better than 4.  Just re-watch the first one and you'll get your fix.

I liked "Live Free Or" ok, despite that the DVD skipped near the end when we watched it. It's been a while since I saw it though, and even then, wasn't paying close attention.

Being unemployed and job hunting gave me a lot of free time last year, and I'd honestly consider it a historically good year for movies.

Sorry you couldn't see 'em.

I really wanted Wreck-It-Ralph to grab best animated picture, but anything Pixar grabs top honors regardless, it seems. Not that disney cares. Win/win for them. I didn't see many movies this year all told (Wreck-it-ralph was the only movie we saw in theatres), so really, the Oscars are sort of pointless for this guy.

Yeah, seems 1up's/Pixlbit's community in general has the same experience with movies I do with games (I haven't played a new game in YEARS, having the last system I own being a DS), oh well.

Only two movies I saw last year were The Avengers and Brave. I personally loved Brave, but I really think you have to be a daughter who butted heads with her mother to really get the impact of the story.

I LOVED Avengers, but even in the one category it was in, I gave Life of Pi a slght edge (visual effects).

Ans I understand, Brave was a good movie, but I sympathized quite a bit with Silverman's character in Ralph, the way you did with the girl in Brave. Again, as I said in the blog, Brave was gorgeous, it's subjective.

You ever see Anna Kerenina with Vivien Leigh? She's my favorite actress of all time. That movie was alright, but not nearly her best. I don't bother watching the oscars. We don't even have cable lol. I wouldn't mind reading about Ozzfest.

Don't need cable, but I'm guessing you mean no TV in general?

And I'll send you the links to my Ozzfest stuff, Abobo. Just remind me. I don't want you having to search through my 500 blogs, now all archived on Blogger just to find 'em.

I have never read or seen anything but those trailers about Anna Kerenina, hadn't read or seen anything about Les Miserables either, until watching last year's film. I ain't cultured so good. lol

Dude, Seth McFarlane was the only reason I even bothered to watch the Oscars, and I wasn't disappointed not one bit.  Loved every moment of his segments.

I loved them, too, might just watch again whenever mom watches out recording.

THey looked PISSED when he did that boobs song, not sure if that was an act or not. lol

I was going to watch the Oscars but it was over when I realized I forgot about it. Looking at the winners, I'm glad I didn't watch it. Not that none of those movies didn't deserve their wins, but I'd hardly watched any of them. Not exactly the most fun way to spend three hours and watch all the movies you didn't watch be celebrated.

I understand. This is one of the few years I actually saw most of the nominees.
