Blake's Favourite Game Music!

Yeah we all have those songs from gaming that we love. I've held off for a while talking about them, but now I shall unleash them to you in no particular order!

MGS 3 - Ending Theme

Pretty sure MGS3 was the first time I ever cried in a game. We got that ending, that beautifully emotional ending, followed by this song. This acoustic recreation of the MGS2 theme song. If you don't feel something when you hear this, you either never played Snake Eater, or you have no soul.

Silent Hill 1 Theme

Holy shit, that opening! It's fucking terrifying! You know you're in for a scary time when you hear THAT! Then it kicks in and starts being all depressing and shit. Which I guess perfectly encapsulates Silent Hill as a series: It scares the shit out of you while simultaneously driving you to suicide. They're emotional rollercoasters as well as just creep fests. This song is just amazing.

Where are you - Thomas Was Alone

Thomas was alone would be quite a bland game if it wasn't for it's sound design. It really is the narration and music that make that game a modern classic, as without them, it would be merely a puzzle platformer about blocks. This song perfectly captures the atmosphere of that game, and it is just so intensely melancholy, yet in a hopeful way.

Song of Healing - Majora's Mask

It probably says a lot about me that Majora's Mask is my favourite Zelda game. This song sums up why, it's creepy, it's dark, and it's beautiful. Like the game. Love this song.

Morrowind Theme

No you tool, it's not the Skyrim theme. It's the Morrorwind theme, and I like it better here, as an orchestral score as opposed to the chanting. It works for Skyrim, to be sure, it gets you pumped to kick some ass! This theme however gets you ready to explore, to experience, not to bludgeon. That is why I love it.

Terra's Theme - FFVI

This is one of those songs that just makes me happy whenever I hear it. It's simple, sure, but it's extremely effective, and extremely awesome.

Gwyn, Lord of Cinder - Dark Souls

This song just makes the last fight in the game so incredibly epic. Every other boss fight has been an orchestral reckoning, a tense mix of strings, percussion and choirs that sound both intensely creepy and adrenaline inducing. This song is sombre, it points out your seeming futility, and it reflected my lack of strength by the time I faced this boss for the kazillionth time. It works so well. It's just such a powerful song used at exactly the right time. When I finally defeated him, this song kept playing for a little while longer, allowing me to reflect on what I'd just done. It lead into an ambiguious ending, and one of 4 new game plus's for me. Seriously, I love Dark Souls lol.

So there you go. Those are my favourite songs in music. What did you think? And what are yours?

I like the song of time that plays when the mask salesman is around in MAjora's Mask.  I can close my eyes and hear it anytime I want.

Yeah, it's a different take on the song of healing. That version gets stuck in my head a lot too lol. I think that versions a bit creepier too, don't know why.

Love MGS3 and Majora themes, and Terra's Theme immediately popped brentalfloss's lyrics into my head.

Hooray for Terra's Theme!

There are so many game songs out there that I can't pick just a few.  Some of my favorites include Mega Man music, Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger, Katamari Damacy, Tales of Legendia, Klonoa, and much more!

Yeah, the music to Klonoa and Chrono Trigger are fantastic. I loved Klonoa when I was younger, wish I still had a copy. I would include them, but no particular song from them sticks out in my head unfortunately, and I haven't listened to their soundtracks in ages.

"Holy shit, that opening! It's fucking terrifying!" - Silent Hill 1 Theme

To me it just sounded like a typical day in Sicilia, and then the song just turns to shite.

Nice list! Watching Thomas Was Alone made me feel kinda dizzy. The only ones I knew beforehand were MGS 3 and Terra's theme. The latter of which I have heard a million times. FF 6 has an incredible soundtrack.

Really incredible songs. I specially liked the Morrowind theme because it reminded me a lot of Lord of the Rings, the Silent Hill theme for the string and Terra's Theme really deserves its status as a classic videogame tune.

These are songs that just serve to reinforce the games goals in such a beautiful way! Glad you liked them!

You're on a music kick lately, lol

And for Gwyn's theme, I always took it as the somber feelings Gwyn had towards his life in general. Not only did he lose everything for the flame, he was killed by a person who finished off a majority of his family and ran amuck within his kingdom. But as it is Dark Souls, that was only my take on his theme. I love it regardless!

Also, there's an extended version on YouTube if you ever want to listen to it in longer chunks Smile

Yeah, I constantly change my opinions on which I love more, gaming or music. I think I love them vboth equally lol. And yeah, I guess you're right, but it does make that fight feel amazing regardless. Poor Gwyn. I almost felt bad for killing him the first time... but ti had to be done!
