Pacific Rim shows some love for Giant robot lovers

This movie is more or less the live action Evangalion movie that many of us have been wanting to see for 17 years now. Without spoiling the plot it is fair to say there are a lot of similarities. Yet it also creates its own unique universe and lore that is very easy to get into. The plot and the characters are pretty straight forward, nothing particularly deep but leaves room for a meatier prequel or sequel.

But what this movie does do is take the idea of epic battles of behemoth machines vs behemoth monsters and runs with it. The battle are insane and most importantly well choreograhed. None of this shaking, blured to close up camera crap some some movies do to make up for a lack of ideas or save on the cost of animation. And the robot and monster designs are a nice compromise between western and eastern influences. Not overly bland and funtional like more western mechs, but not overly flamboyant and pretty like eastern mech designs.

I do not often see movies at the theater multiple times, but I will likely go see this again first because it was just awsome and second because I had to go pee and missed the climax of one of the best battles about 3/4 of the way through the film. At just a little over 2 hours and being a nonstop ride I would avoid drinking before or during this movie, lol.

I give it a solid 8.5 out of 10 and its worth the extra few bucks to see it in 3-D.

unfortunately, according to IGN, Grown ups 2 and Despicable Me 2 did better.  Pacific Rim had a disappointing debut.  :(

I haven't seen it, but I like giant robot movies.

Ok Despicable Me 2 I get, that's a kid's movie, those always do well, but Grown Ups 2? I hope everyone who saw that dies of fucking cancer. Or at least goes to hell for a few days.

Then again, I didn't see anything at all, so I did not do my part. Want to see this soon, though; Despicable Me 2 as well, but that's one I don't mind waiting for on DVD.

Before anyone takes me too seriously, no I don't literally want anyone to die of cancer or go to hell, but I seriously am baffled by what people like about Sandler movies in 2013. I grew up with the guy on Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, Waterboy, Big Daddy, when I was younger, but now? Oh well, at least I hope Pacific Rim stays in theaters a bit longer for me to see it the right way.

I just saw Pacific Rim today.  Or what I call it, "Anime: The Movie."  Not very deep, but loads of mindless fun if you like Godzilla or giant robots.

I'd actually never heard of this movie before this weekend.  Never saw a preview or anything.  I just read a description and saw the word "Kaiju" and I knew I wanted to see this over Lone Ranger.

Only problem I had with the movie is the monsters were so big that I couldn't get a good bead on what they looked like. Camera was always too close. But oh well, I'm just used to those rubber suit monsters, I guess.

Just got back from a very late 3D showing of Pacific Rim. I liked it for what it was, a modern Japanese monster movie with a Western slant. ILM did the special effects and so of course they were stunning. Most of the story was very predictable. I was guessing right what was about to happen every single time. But there were some interesting things like the "drift" idea where two or more pilots have to share minds and think as one to run the giant robots. It's kinda like being "in the zone" in sports. I liked that Charlie Kelly from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia was in it. He was great. My friend who went with me thought it was all pretty silly, so I kept yelling like an excited eight year old Japanese kid "look at the giant Kaiju!" and "that robot is so big!" He got a kick out of it and I secretly wanted to be that eight year old Japanese kid. That's kind of what this movie turns you into when you watch it.

Oh yea, I played the demo for the game on XBLA earlier in the day. I'm not big on 1v1 fighters even if it is giant robots vs. giant monsters. So I didn't buy it.

I really want to get out and see this movie at some point. I've been catching the trailers ever since they were teasers back in 2012. Glad to know you liked it though!
