Pacific Rim. Just shut up and go see it.

I went and saw Pacific Rim on Friday. I know this one wasnt generating the buzz it was hoping to, I think since Transformers went stale after the first movie and Battleship was a bust, people weren't too keen on another giant robot movie. But this one had Guillermo Del Toro behind it. He knows how to do a movie for sure, and the Robots and Monsters look fantastic.

Now, if you love giant robots fighting giant monsters, then you know you don't need much more convincing to see this movie. I went in thinking that, if anything, the fighting will be cool. It was. The robotos are awesome. This movie also had the benefit of having Del Toro's weird vision to spruce things up. Its a nice touch in a movie like this, it keeps it from looking too run of the mill B-Hollywood.

*minor spoilers ahead*

One thing I didn't like.

The giant robots are controlled by syncing up with a human brain and mimicing the actions and thoughts of the piolet. The complexity of these robots became too much for one brain to handle so they would mind link two piolets together to divvy up the thought processes. This requires the two piolets to essentially share one mind. So each piolet shares the thoughts and memories of the other....unless its benficial to the plot not to. :/  They are supposed to be sharing one mind, but exept for the plot points revealed by the meld they don't really react to each others thoughts. They could have gone in really deep with it but they took the popcorn movie approach and cheesed out. I can't help but wonder if this was something the studio wanted, just seems too cookie-cutter for the man who brought us Pans Labryinth.

But overall, the effects alone are worth going to see. I didn't see it in 3D but I would go again just to check it out. The sense of scale is amazing, these bots are HUGE, as are the monsters. I think I was a little 'eh on the design of the monsters themselves, some were a bit too "gooey" looking which really revealed the CGI. I think if they had more substance and weight to them I'd buy them more. But this is minor, the battles and effects, again, are worth the price of admission. I say leave your critcal mind at home and just enjoy the splendor on the screen for once.

A friend of mine just saw it and told me it was great.  I don't have any plans to go to the theaters anytime soon, but I may make a special trip to go see this.

I want to go see it but I don't have anybody to drag with me to it. I already made a deal with my mom to see Wolverine with me.  Wink

I've heard of a few people who went to see this movie and so far, the positivity has been great in regards to the film. Of course, everyone I have asked so far has been a gamer, so that may have something to do with it as well!

Overall though, I still really want to check this movie out sometime!

Stopped reading at the spoiler warning lol. I do hope to see this sometime. There's a discount theatre where I live that gets movies after their theatrical run is over but before the disc release. Only $2! If it gets Pacific Rim, I'd love to go see it.

My local theater's matinee showings (non-3D) are around that price. I think I might go it alone tomorrow. There are other movies I want to see, but the ones I make an effort to see in theaters are SFX movies, which this definitely is.

I find myself going to the movies by myself more often lately. Been impossible to get my friends together.

Put your mind in a jar by the door, because you won't need it. ILM baby! Monster battle like you've never seen it before! Yeehoo!

Just hope Charlie Day doesn't meld with your mind in the jar with his portable mind meld device.

Oh wow! I didn't think of that. Now he'll find out I'm scouting Earth for the Kaiju invasion. Damn you Dr. Geiszler!

Totally. The way they wait to use the best weapons on the bot until they are almost beat. Every. Time.

Like Voltron, you think they would just form Voltron and slice the robeasts in half right away instead of playing around with the lions separately, getting their butt kicked, forming Voltron, getting their butt kicked, THEN form blazing sword and slice them in half. How about do that first? NO!! whats the fun in that?

I think what makes this movie work is it doesn't take itself seriously. Other summer blockbusters make you stare at Wil Smiths face for too long or try to have some kind of message on top of the popcorn flick effects. This knows its source material and just plays tribute to it. The only gripes I have are just wanting MORE of certain things, not changing or improving them.

Plus it has Charlie Day yelling. There aren't many things funnier than Charlie Day yelling.

Yea, more of Charlie Day. I wanted him to ride a Kaiju right back to their homeworld and convince Earth they just want to be friends.
