Red Johnson's Chronicles reviewed

I love good point-and-click adventure games. This, unfortunately, is not one of them. It wasn't a bad game, but it wasn't a good game, either.

The story is set in a seedy city in a dystopian future, as far as I can tell. The main character is a PI named Red Johnson (bet you couldn't tell that from the title, lol) who is hired by the fat, lazy, corrupt Officer Roberts to solve a murder. The story itself isn't bad, just a little cheesy in places.

Where the game fails is on the game play end of things. There are the usual puzzles to solve, and unfortunately all too frequently there really isn't enough info to go on to solve them. The other issue that I ran into were the horrendous QTEs that don't give you enough time to even register that they're happening, much less let you push a button in time. There is also some grading system that feels all too random. There may be some sort of rhyme or reason behind it, but damned if I could figure it out. Some times I'd get an A, sometimes I'd get a C for what felt like an identical set of circumstances. You also earn money for solving the various puzzles and quizzes. All it seems good for is paying informants for clues. Sometimes the clues are helpful, sometimes not so much.

All in all, I found the game to be more tedious and frustrating than fun. If you're a fan of point-and-click adventures, don't waste your time on this one, unless you get it for $3.99 like I did. If you're not sure about point-and-click adventures, steer clear of this one, there are much better ones out there.

This game made me have an existential gaming crisis. I actually was so bummed out after reviewing it that I couldn't play anything for a couple weeks.

Oh dear god. You reviewed the sequel! One of these abominations wasn't enough, they had to make two?!

I think I'll stick with the Tex Murphy series for my fix of dystopian point-and-clickers.

Tex Murphy? Not familiar with those.

you should look them up, Tami.  there's bunch of them, and they're considered classics of the genre.  GOG often has deals on them.

GOG doesn't accept my credit card, so I'm SOL there.

I have those, and they are really good.

I'd really like to dig in deep with the genre, if I could only find the time.

There are some really good ones out there. I'm taking notes for a future blog about the best and the worst that I've encountered. I love the genre, but when point-and-clicks go bad, they can be really painful to play.

Neat! I want to hear which ones are good.

Red Johnson? That's the name they went with? Ok.

Sounds bad. Don't really like point-and-clicks too much anyway though. Although Lemmings could be fun "God has a magnifying glass, we're all ants" fare.

LOL, Joe. And that's what I thought, too. There are some really good ones out there, this was just not one of them.

Have you played any of the Sam & Max point and click games?  I love those.  Everyone thinks of TellTale as The Walking Dead makers now, but before then they made some pretty awesome stuff.  Sam & Max and the Wallace & Gromit games are my favorites.

No, not yet. You keep telling me how good they are. Back to the Future part 1 was pretty good, too, and I'd like to play the others in that series, too.

When it comes to point and click games, I prefer the stereotypical Escape the Room scenario. I don't know why, but I love it!

I guess I just don't want to be stuck in a room I suppose, lol!

There are some good "escape the room" point and clicks on kongregate.com, and they're free.

I played a demo of this one and it seemed rather boring.

I liked the art style. And it was less boring and more broken than anything else.

Is this the same game as the one found on XBLA? I tried that and deleted it just as soon as I played a few minutes of it!

I think the one on XBLA may be the sequel to it. Julian reviewed that one, and had a horrible experience with it.

I love point-and-click games, but hate QTE's with a passion. My reflexes are not what they used to be. I prefer the type where you can kick back and ponder a good mystery. Besides,I have my work cut out for me on Pinball FX2. Your scores are incredible! It will take me a while before I even come close to you on those tables.

Wayde, these are some of the most unfair QTEs I've ever had the misfortune to run across. Go play pinball instead.
