Project X-Zone: Team SEGA

For my last blog in my series on the characters in Project X-Zone, an action-strategy RPG on 3DS, we’ll look at the cast from SEGA’s games.  Of all the three companies’ games listed in Project X-Zone, I probably know the least about the SEGA roster.  So this will be a rather short and uninformative blog.  Maybe some of you folks can fill in the gaps for me in the comments section?

Team Pairs

As we did before, here is a list of the characters who team up to fight together.

Kurt Irving & Riela Merceris (Valkyria Chronicles 3)

I really don’t know anything about the characters in Valkyria Chronicles games.  Although a good friend told me that Valkyria Chronicles 3 never made it to the US.  I’m hoping this same friend will post a comment with more detail on these characters.

Ichiro Ogami & Sakura Shinguji (Sakura Wars)

Sakura Wars is another popular long-running strategy RPG series from SEGA.  Most of the titles never made it to the US either.  So I don’t know much about them other than they are strategy RPGs where characters pilot giant mech robots in an alternate 1920’s setting.  The Sakura character in this game has blue hair, so that’s kind of cool.

Gemini Sunrise & Erica Fontaine (Sakura Wars)

Thanks to Atlus, ONE of the Sakura Wars games made it to the US that I know about.  It was on PS2 and Wii, and I did actually review the Wii game a few years ago.  I don’t know much about Erica Fontaine, but Gemini Sunrise was my favorite character in the Wii Sakura Wars game I reviewed.  She was a cowgirl from Texas (yay), who moved to New York so she could join the group of mech battlers disguised as a Broadway troupe.  She was really funny, and when she moved into an apartment in New York, she let her horse stay in the apartment with her!  I bet that was a pretty smelly apartment!  They should’ve let her horse pilot a mech.  Then it would run on horse power!  Har har!  Anyway, glad to see she’s in Project X-Zone.

Akira Yuki & Pai Chan (Virtua Fighter)

I don’t really know much about Virtua Fighter characters, but Akira is kind of the main character and Pai is a Chinese girl fighter.  I don’t really have a favorite VF character, so maybe one of you could pick out a favorite character for me.  I know that Sarah Bryant was kind of neat in the most recent Dead or Alive game I reviewed, and I heard that in one of the VF games, she has an alternate costume that looks like Ulala from Space Channel 5, so that’s pretty cool.

Toma & Cyrille (Shining Force EXA)

I don’t know much about the Shining Force strategy RPGs from SEGA either, mainly because the ones I’ve looked at, the gameplay didn’t appeal to me very much.  There is a series of action RPGs from SEGA called Shining Tears that looks more interesting to me.  I think I have one of the first ones on PS2, but never got around to playing it!

Zephyr & Leanne (Resonance of Fate)

To be honest, I’ve never even heard of a SEGA game called Resonance of Fate.  The characters from this game in Project X-Zone shoot a lot of guns.  And that’s all I know!

Single Team Units

Next, here are the single characters that you can attach to a group of two for an extra boost of attack.

Imca (Valkyria Chronicles 3)

As I said earlier, I don’t know anything about Valkyria Chronicles games, so I have no idea who this is.

Ulala (Space Channel 5)

Ah, Ulala, my pretend girlfriend.  Just kidding!  There’s a story behind why I joke about that, but I’m not going to tell it here!  If you really wanna know, you can send me a PM or whatever.  Anyway, I love the characters and settings from Space Channel 5 games; unfortunately I’m not very good at them.  Ulala is one of my favorite SEGA characters, though, alongside Tails and Ristar (wish they were in Project X-Zone).  She’s especially cool in this game because she summons other classic SEGA characters to help her fight, like Opa-Opa and Space Harrier!  You go, Ulala!

Vashyron (Resonance of Fate)

Again, never heard of this game, much less the characters in it.

Bruno (Dynamite Cop)

Only thing I know about Dynamite Cop is that when it was brought to the US, they renamed it Die Hard: The Arcade Game.  At least I think that’s what happened.

Rikiya Busujima (Zombie Revenge)

I did a little research and it turns out that Zombie Revenge was an arcade game that almost got a Dreamcast port.  It was a side scrolling beat ‘em up featuring characters and settings from the House of the Dead games.  Sounds kind of interesting.

Genghis Bahn III (Fighting Vipers)

I’ve never played this early 3-D fighter, but I did try to get a review code from SEGA when it was released as a downloadable title for 360 and PS3 a while back.  Looks like it had some interesting characters, so I’d like to try it someday, given the chance.  The dude here in Project X-Zone is rather boisterous, but a strong fighter.

Enemies, Items, and Conclusions

And that’s all the playable SEGA characters in Project X-Zone.  I did recognize a few enemies from the SEGA games as well.  Dural is one of the final bosses in Virtua Fighter games.  You also fight Morolians, cute little aliens from Space Channel 5.  Some of the items you can get, I’ve recognized from other games, too.  For instance, one of the equippable items you can get is a Xevious T-Shirt, and Apple Gels are healing items from the Tales games (both are from Namco).

And that’s all I feel like talking about Project X-Zone.  I hope you enjoyed this blog series.  In the comments section, let me know who your favorite SEGA characters are in this game, and which ones you would’ve liked to have seen.  Can you guess my favorites?  Later!  --Cary

I don't know any of these characters. All I know is that a horse piloting a mech sounds like an incredible idea! There should be a game like that. Remember Mister Ed? He could talk! So why not?

You don't even know who Ulala is?  Awwww...

Based on the character roster I DO want! Even if the story ain't special I'd love to rock it with the God Eater Burst characters. The spritework in these kinds of games is also superb! Smile

Yeah the Gods Eater Burst cast is very cool (especially Alisa), and the sprites are great.

Surprisingly, I actually am familiar with most of these characters, or at least the games they're in. The Sega cast is probably the most obscure of the three companies due to Sega's spotty track records in localization and marketing, but the Sega characters are my favorites. I sure wish Valkyria Chronicles 3 would come over here, since you know how much I love that series, but maybe an English patch will be finished for it.  Ditto with Sakura Wars and Virtua Fighter, which also both made my top 20 list of favorite games. I also have Resonance of Fate, which is one of the best RPGs of the generation.

I wish they added the Daytona car from Fighters Megamix

I'm so happy that some characters from Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers were apart Project X Zone, especially Fighting Vipers. Fighting Vipers are really fun too. You should try it some time.

Yeah Fighting Vipers looks kind of interesting.  You'll have to pick me out a character I would like.
