Glad to see your game is coming together Ben! You'll have to hit me up whenever the running demo is ready and I'll attempt to give it a try!
I only say attempt because my personal PC is crap and may not be able to run it.. Ugh.. lol

Damn you, RPGMAKER VX ACE & Dragon’s Dogma! Where did my time go? The bad news is all of you think I’m dead. The good news is I might actually have a working demo for my rpg soon. It will include the first two or three boss fights as well as the hospital, theatre, and police department as interactive locations.
As a warning here is what to expect
1. Plays like a classic “JRPG” complete with a first person turn based Dragon Warrior battle-system.
2. Read everything because the story is pretty dense. If you speed through the text windows you’ll miss a lot. However, if you can still enjoy playing the game without knowing the whole convoluted plot nonsense good for you!
3. Be warned this game delves into some pretty dark & sexual territory sometimes. Y’know, one of the benefits of not having to answer to a big publisher like EA or Activision. Aka no, I did not even try to create a game that caters to everyone all at once.
4. If you don’t like my attempt at an rpg, it’s cool! This is a decidedly old school game and I understand why some people might be offended by some of its’ content.
"This is supposed to "shame me" over how I draw women in provacative (promiscous) poses. Instead it makes me wonder if I'm a closet bi-sexual! Oh Hawkie, you so fine you so fine you blow my mind, hey Hawkie!"
Beyond that I’ve been reading this whole retarded “Hawkeye initiative nonsense”. I’m sorry if I offended some of you if you happen to be on the side applauding the Hawkeye initiative but before you rage at me and call me a horny basement dwelling loser, let me at least make my point more clear.
"Don't like this?"
"Try this!"
Any true fan of comics knows there’s a pretty wide plethora of different kinds of comics & graphic novelas to choose from. Aka, if you don’t like seeing Psylocke’s ass & boobs hang out while her spine is contorted like a pretzel you could always delve into Sandman, Books of magic, The Invisibles, Hell-bringer, or Preacher. DC’s Vertigo line constantly had excellent material and to my knowledge most of the cover art for my favorite Vertigo books was not over-sexualized in any way. The stories under such names were also much more mature and layered than the typical superhero drama nonsense. (Not that I “dislike” super hero drama nonsense mind you!)
I’d also highly recommend Astro City, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Scott Pilgrim, and almost anything from Dark-horse. You will actually learn there’s a lot more to comic books & graphic novels than the mainstream Marvel & DC universes. (Imagine that!)
I’m all for “comics growing up” to a point. (But as you can see, many comics already have “grown up” in the first place.) But as a heterosexual male I’m also going to admit with not a single ounce of shame I sometimes like the sexy & unrealistic absurdity found in mainstream comics! I think there’s a place for it and the present crusade to shame all comic artists into drawing “PC material” is utter bollocks. I get the feeling most of the people doing this are not even “real fans”. These are the type of people that have watched The Avengers & Ironman 3 and believe that somehow makes them all knowing authorities on the comic books these films are based on. Go ahead, ask one of these “liberal feminists” who Vision is or what the Age Of Apocalypse story arch was all about in X-men. Chances are they’ll give you puzzled looks. Maybe two or three people in that room of 50 will actually be able to talk to you about the comic book continuity as opposed to just what happens in the movies.
My challenge to these women is the same challenge I’d give to women complaining about videogames and those edicts are as follows.
1. Educate yourself.
2. Empower yourself with knowledge on the subject at hand. By knowledge I mean facts, not absurdist left wing propaganda siphoned through a radical feminist lens!
3. Create a “good game” or “good comic” that expresses your ideals without necessarily cramming it down people’s throats.
4. Know that these fields are mostly “male dominated” because as a whole more males want to make games and draw comics than females do. No, it’s not a patriarchal conspiracy to keep you down. It’s just certain jobs attract more of one gender than the other. For example, there are men hair stylists but not nearly as many women hair stylists.
5. Know you will probably face some amount of “true sexism” in the work place but chances are your male cohorts will be going through their own kinds of personal hell too. However, if said sexism gets out of line you should report it. What crosses the line? If your boss or one of your co-workers constantly gropes your ass and asks you for sex (And you don’t like him in that way) you really should get that douche bag fired! However, if you hear a dirty or offensive joke from your male co-workers that isn’t even about you or anyone you know in particular, it’s harmless and you should let it slide without trying to get them fired for it. Female co-workers tell dirty jokes too so on such occasions you should live and let live. Ask yourself how you would feel getting fired in this bad economy because of a joke shared between you and one of your besties. Do not do onto others as you would not want done onto yourself!
6. Work hard and you WILL get respect!
7. When tempted to whine about some injustice on your vlog come up with a viable solution for said injustice instead.
8. Learn the differences between “sexy” and “sexism”.
9. See the line between “fantasy” and “reality”. Learn to appreciate both for how they’re different from each other!
10. Do not infiltrate comic cons & game cons just to harshly criticize all the people who attend the events. It makes you like a holier than thou pompous asshole. If you do not like anything at these events then ask yourself “Why am I even fucking here in the first place?” Also, if you have nothing positive to “contribute”, GTFO!
11. Some comic book heroines/anti heroines really are “sexual” individuals. There’s a reason Cat-woman wears Skintight leather, that’s just who she is. Me-ow!
12. Hard as it is to believe, there are women who do like sexualized images of other women. As such when you get up on your podium to preach, realize you are NOT speaking of behalf of ALL women!
"I know at least 3 female friends who "love" Lady Death. Bite me!"
Astro City is remarkably good. A good spin on things. the rest of the stuff you namedropped is great too. I remember there being some naughty nudity in Sandman though.... ... and definitely in the Invisibles too, which i love but like Sandman can get pretty violent.
I'm really glad you are working on your game. I haven't had time for mine lately, boo me. But I'll get to it. Working on my Batman project when i get free moments.
HAwkeye looks pretty sexy there, I do admit.
Hawkeye is too sexy. I'm not worthy,Matt! He's too much of a perfect adonis. I'm shit by comparison!
As for nudity in Sandman, I remember it being pretty tasteful with no unusual contortions going on. I didn't find it offense then again, some people might.
Thanks for wishing me the best on my game. Glad it's finally coming along at a quicker rate. Best of wishes on your Batman project as well! The writing is some of your best and the artist helping you is awesome!
Yup. Invisibles has some very questionable stuff. By comparison Sandman is just as good but much more vanilla.
It took me awhile to like Dane. I mean the kid sets houses on fire for fun. He also beat up a teacher who was just trying to help him out while shouting "You'll never understand me!".
Also the concept behind The Harmony House is just creepy. Talk about brainwashing!
If you like The Invisibles you might want to check out the Wild Cards books, Matt! It's what George R.R. Martin worked on before A Song Of Ice And Fire. It's pretty much a super hero universe through an adult lens. The books have a few fucked up moments too but I still highly recommend them!
I'm glad your still alive Ben! I'm looking forward to that demo. What exactly is this Hawkeye initiative? Most people forget that before Psylocke became an assassin she was a prudish britsh woman. I can't say I'm against the change lol.
Lady Death i haven't read that in years, i hear good things about the currebt series though.
I haven't read the Book of Magic in years but being 90s vertigo i'm sure it's better than Harry Potter
Damn, forgot about the Hawkeye Initiative, good times. I remember when they first flared up and it was fine at first but like everything on the internet the joke wore thin and the point was lost. The 90s was the Dark age indeed, even as a kid i always woundered how an artist can get boob and arse from the same female on one page, I find that hilarious
But i'm a prude so T&A never really did it for me.
The damn funny books are always a get picked on, usually for good reason but then it spirals out of control, like "women in refrigerators", boy did lose clout fast.
It's true, mainstream comics are easy to poke fun of. lol. However, I partly like them for that very same absurdity I guess.
The 90's was the age comic book creators were trying to buck the status quo. As such we got a few good reads like The Maxx, Bone, Witchblade, and The Darkness but we had to put up with some utter nonsense too.
The Hawkeye Intiative has a point and it's great as satire but I don't think it should be taken as a "serious crusade" against sexual objectfication in comics. There's more artful ways of getting that across.
I have seen that Hawkeye Initiative before. Now that I have seen the website, I cannot say that I really understand what they are trying to say. I just find the pictures to be humorous.
I also seem to have avoided reading the comic books that you were gracious enough to show artwork for.
Exactly. You go to Vertigo for the great story telling. Even when the covers are abstract, surreal, and weird you know you're generally in for something good!
However, I swing both ways. Aka, I love more mature graphic novels but I dig the more childish mainstream cheese too. However, I did sort of drift from Marvel after the whole "Marvel Zombies" arc. It might have actually been decent but I was going through one of my "I'm tired of zombies" phases. lol.
While I understand that this Hawkeye nonsense may not be a part of it, I'm fed up with the PC movement altogether. I'm sorry folks, but you don't have the right to no be offended or otherwise put off by shit. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but you just don't. The sooner you come to grips with that fact, the better off you'll be.
Oh, you can moan about the shit that you allow to bother you, don't get me wrong. You have that right, even though you'd find your quality of life improving a great deal more if you'd just learn how to stop sweating the petty stuff. However, after you've got all the bitching out of your system, don't be surprised when the world fails to conform to your expectations of it.
Anyway, once again you've written something that provides much food for thought, Ben. Well done.
Totally, man. It's okay to be offended. I mean we're all offended by something. But to come into something just to conform it to one particular fringe group's core values? I really don't like that and would go so far to say it's unconstitutional.
I really like variety. I don't mind feminists creating feminist comic books or making femminist games. What I have a problem with is them trying to conform the whole geek/gamer culture to their own point of view. "Borging" is lame!
C'mon Cary, you know why she's cool. She can creat a blade of psychic energy from thin air, stab it into someone's skull, and extract their memories. That's a pretty handy super power! It's just kind of sad most games with Psylocke in them only focus on her powers doing "physical damage". It limits her full scope.
I'm planning on going to PAX Australia dressed as Ivy from Soul Callibur. That's how I plan on making my point.
I agree that feminists should start making games. That would be an excellent way to get the point across. In fact, they already have! Have you played Mainichi? It's a free game about a black transgender woman, the choices she makes and the cruelness she faces. Plus it was made on RPGMaker if I remember correctly! Check it out here if you're so inclined http://indiegames.com/2012/11/freeware_game_pick_mainichi_ma.html
Haven't played Mainichi but I played Lisa. It was embarassing though because for the longest time I didn't know what the hell I was doing! Videos like this one helped a lot!
What's my opinion of Lisa? Eh, I get the symbolism but the game kind of came off as one big gross shock-tactic. I liked the game's use of the Eartbound sprite style though!
Thanks for the recommend, Blake! Hopefully it'll click with me a bit more than Lisa did.
I sympathize with the Hawkeye Initiative. Not because I expect there not to be cheesecake in superhero comics, but because I think there are a lot of fanboys that need to get over themselves and their self-consciousness about their and other males' sexuality/anatomy. I love that HI makes some of them squirm. There was some outrage a few years ago because artist Alex Ross dared to indicate a male character's package underneath his tights in an illustration. So what? Are they afraid the dick is going to leap off the page and into their mouths, and someone is going to be around to snap a photo of it and circulate it around their school? They are expecting an artist who works in realist technique to not show that men have genitals. It's ridiculous. My generation got past that shit about the time we had health class in junior high.
Another reason is because the artist's job is to help tell the story, not get dicks hard. I want to see poses that somewhat believably convey the action the character is performing. You didn't see them trying to force ass and side boob into every fight scene with Trinity in the Matrix, or the chick in Serentiy. Why should comics be held to a different standard than other storytelling mediums? Just tell the f-ing story!
I think there's a disconnect because the people writing the story aren't the same people doing the covers. Okay, sometimes you get a comic or graphic novel 100% done by the same person but it's a wonderful rarity when it happens. Usually each comic book has a team of varied people working on it.
As for "cock bulges" in comics? I don't get the controversy either. It actually kind of freaks me out so many comic artists draw the heroes 100% devoid of penis. I feel like I'm staring at a bunch of body building eunuchs. Yet showing camel toe and nipples is 100% "alright"?! Absurd!
Just wanted to add a cool series that I just discovered and as a Marvel fan I am ashamed to admit I knew nothing about untill a few weeks ago. Runaways. One of the cooler collections in the series is called Dead End Kids and was written by Joss Wheadon and illustrated by Michael Ryan. No T&A just a really good story. But if you prefer a good story with some modest T&A check out DC's Birds of Prey: Of Like Minds. All I gotta say is Black Canary and Huntress.
There is a distinct double standard going on. Just like on TV and in films. Where they don't hesitate to show women completely nude, but very rarely men. I think we can all handle it. Well, maybe not the religious folks. Some of them can be repressed and have issues with nudity I guess. I love comics that have a darker edge to them. You mentioned one I really like,Preacher. The Darkness is another one I'm into. Your RPG sounds very interesting. Best of luck with that. I would give it a shot if I could download it successfully.
Thanks for the good wishes,Celt! But yeah it's weird how a man's bulge in a comic book is more controversial than a female nipping out while showing camel toe. I've noticed a lot of male comic book characters are more or less drawn like eunuchs.
Btw, Preacher and Darkness are great. You have good tastes!
reminds me of the chat I had with some old school girl friends during my high school years when I happened to bring an issue of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy where the cover showed most of the female cadets in their form fitting, wasp-waisted uniforms.
though they ment it as a jest I can't help but wonder if they were offended, curious, liked or repelled by it. Double given they were also star trek fans.
