Well, the steam sale is finally over. It did not do as much of a number on my wallet as it has in the past. I think that the quality of this year’s purchases has exceeded what I picked up last steam sale. This season I picked up; Sword of the Stars: The Pit, Monaco, Evoland, Gunpoint, The Swapper, Ys I and II chronicles, and Antichamber. I am excited to play them all, and I have actually spent an hour or so with Evoland and it is a very fun distraction. My steam catalog is becoming more and more overwhelming, and I do not expect to work through it anytime soon. I have gotten to the point that I keep my steam backlog separate from my console backlog and even keep my handheld backlog separate from the other two. This allows me the ability to focus on one far more manageable mountain of games that I would like to play.
I have officially given up on Faxanadu. I have only made it about halfway through the game, but have enjoyed nearly every minute of it. The only problem that I have had so far is the difficulty of the next castle in the game. After dying for the eighth or ninth time in a row I have become frustrated enough to put the game down for now. I hope to get back to it at some point but like my steam backlog, it may take a while.
Thanks to Digital Mystery Tour, I have a newfound appreciation for videogame music. In fact, it has had an effect on how I have been playing my games. I decided to do this because I am currently playing through the Metroid Prime Trilogy and have heard nothing but good things about the soundtrack. I wanted to actually hear how wonderful the music is, but also know what song belongs to what area of the game. This has made my experience with the games so much more enjoyable. The absolute best part about this is that my favourite songs are the ones that are quieter and I definitely missed the first time around. I absolutely love the music that is being played in the wrecked ship in Prime, and in the lower section of Torvus Bog in Echoes.
The dawn of a new console generation is at hand. With the excitement that the new consoles bring, now seems to be the perfect time to look back on this past generation of gaming. Game(s) of the generation and most influential game(s) conversations are sure to become more and more prevalent as the launches approach. What I am most curious about is how the length of this generation of gaming will have an effect on the lists that will be compiled. I wonder if games released in the past two years will overshadow some of the great or influential games from earlier on in the generation. One final thought... Will it be Demon Souls or Dark Souls, or both?
