Those were some great action scenes.
RWBY Tuesday: The "Color" Trailers

I thought I’d give this new feature a try given my interest in this new series. Plus it’ll give me a chance to try to stick with a writing schedule, or use this as an excuse to post something.
Every Tuesday, which I personally dub “RWBY Tuesdays”, (see what I did there) I’ll post a link to a new episode of RWBY while also writing a brief recap of the last episode. It’s an idea I got from an old 1up.com ally that no longer is online right now, who happen to post retro anime once a week on his page. And since it seems very few people are aware of RWBY (besides Red vs Blue) I thought I’d share. But before I get into the world of RWBY I thought I’d at speak of the creator of RWBY along with posting the “color” trailers that have made the rounds on the internet these past few months.
RWBY was created by Monty Oum, the man behind the popular Haloid video (Halo's Spartan vs Metroid's Samus Aran)and later on the Dead Fantasy series (Dead or Alive characters vs Final Fantasy characters). Catching the eye of Rooster Teeth Productions they eventually hired him as character animator and choreographer for the fight scenes in seasons eight, nine & ten of the popular machinima webseries Red vs Blue. After the end of Season 10 of Red vs Blue, there happened to be a “special” trailer at the end of the credits that has come to be known as the “Red” trailer for a new series called RWBY.
Since November 2012 to June 2013, Rooster Teeth released 3 other “color” trailers for each of the main characters to this new series. Each trailer introduced not only the girls of RWBY, but also their weapon of choice, style of combat and theme music to their individual character. At the time of their release, little was known about who they were, where they were from and who they were fighting. They had little to know plot or character development but highlighted the kinetic combat animations that Monty Oum has been made known for. But as of the release of episode 1 here is what we know.
Featured in the “red” trailer is Ruby Rose, wielder of the Crescent Rose; a weapon that’s basically the combination of a rifle and a scythe. Though the beginning scene shows her standing over what looks like a gravestone, she doesn’t say a word but instead let’s her weapon do the talking when she’s confronted by wolf-like creatures in a wooded clearing. Her music theme starts out slow but builds into a a theme that makes me think of Mexican bull fighting.
Featured in the “white” trailer is Weiss Schnee, wielder of the Myrtenaster; a rapier that channels magical energy. In her beginning scene it’s alludes that she’s a singer. But during her concert in a mirror switch she’s seen fighting a giant armored knight. Its here we get to see the features of a magic enhanced rapier along with her using some forms of magic. Her musical theme plays out like a concert solo but turns into a orchestral like tune as her fight reaches its climax
Feature in the “black” trailer is Blake Belladonna, wielder of the Gambol Shroud. Though appearing to look like single blade in her fight scenes, it shows it being able to become two blades. It also looks to be attached to a string allowing it become a swinging weapon and house some form of handgun in the hilt. Unlike the last two “color” trailers, Blake actually has some spoken dialogue and is accompanied by a red-haired man called “Adam” who carries a sword in a sheath that doubles as a shotgun. Though we don’t know why the jumped on the train, we are able to see how they fight together and left with a question as to Blake’s actions at the end of the trailer. Blake’s music theme holds a more rock and roll tune when the combat kicks into high gear.
Featured in the “yellow” trailer is Yang Xiao Long, wielder of the Ember Celica; a weapon that is basically twin shotgun gauntlets, complete with belt-like reload features. Out of the three “color” trailers, Yang has the most dialogue and character interactions after she arrives at a club on her motorcycle. She also shows her fighting style against a variety of enemies from basic thugs to fighting twin sisters and the rocket launcher firing Junior. Her music theme is actually a remix of the first three themes from the “red, white, black” trailers along with her song near the end of the trailer. It’s also at the end of the trailer we learn she is the sister to Ruby Rose (who also speaks for the first time).
The RWBY “color” trailers are a treat to watch and are a good primer to get one prepared for the series. The combat flows very well as the girls use their respective weapons. Though lacking in storyline and full character development, it does create a world that’ll eventually be explained in an exposition dump in the beginning of episode one. As for the explanation of the world itself, that’ll be touched on later next week after the release of episode 2.
