BaD 26: Tunes Tuesday and FINALLY Done Archiving

It's true, after proving to Google almost five-hundred times that I'm not a robot, by copying letters and numbers only a damn robot could decipher, all of my 1up blogs are now up at joemikestep.blogspot.com. And yes, the background is kind of ugly, cause unfortunately I not only copy/pasted from Bing to get those ugly picture edges, I also got one where the background of the picture itself is in soft focus, which looks awful when copied all over the place, but trust me it's not nearly as bad as it was, and at least it has a theme now. I'll work on prettying it up later.

Anyway, since the Oscar theme Sunday was "Music in Movies" and this is a videogame blog, I thought I'd give you my three video game songs most perfect for film scores. Yes, I know, you don't care about the Oscars, which is why this blog isn't about them; hell, last blog was supposed to have a ton of gaming references, but I'm a jackass and never start my blogs in Word, cause on my computer, it takes longer to boot up than Firefox does, though you are free to read my blogs with bogus joke plot summaries of this year's Oscar nominees (the ones none of you care about get mocked), and last year's top-grossing films (where both films rangergirl saw are made fun of).

First up, is the song that screams movie score to me, and it makes sense, given what series it comes from.

I've mentioned this song as one of my favorites in a very recent 1up blog, as well as mentioning that I've heard it pop up on sports broadcasts from time to time, and halochief_90 pointed out that it's actually a remix. I vastly prefer this remix to the original.

If they used this song on those Army Strong commercials, which it sounds perfect for ... well, I'd still be hesitant, cause I'm a pussy, unlike my friends in the military, but it would sure as hell rope me in to watching that Act of Valor movie if it popped up in a trailer.

Second of three (I like that number, it's good luck and it keeps me lazy), is the following.

This song is like if John Williams wrote the music for a game; this version at the very least, anyway. That build-up and triumphant crescendo are amazing. And man, does this video capture the essence of what I think when I hear Zelda, right down to the digital metronome and that exit sign.

I'm kidding; actually, I'm curious what church that was recorded in, cause those chandaliers actually do remind me of Zelda aesthetic for some odd reason.

And finally, this

This is an incredibly cheap choice for me to put here in several ways, in that now I've included the same series twice, it's clearly inspired by a movie series to begin with, there are many other game songs that deserve to be here instead, etc., but the way I see it, I put two songs from the MGS series here because it's the series that's most known for bringing a cinematic bent to games, that shows in its music, and this song absolutely nails the Bond feel it goes for. If nothing else, I'm pretty sure GH won't complain. Cool

Hell, this is my favorite recent Bond song, including Skyfall, and it's not even a Bond song. Plus, Snake Eater is just as subtle a name as Pussy Gallore. Good on ya, Kojima! Way to make the porn industry stumble around looking for parody names that could be any more perfect than the original title already is.

Of course, this is in no way a comprehensive list, nor is it intended to be. In all honesty, I just took the first three video game songs that popped up in my mind as "cinematic sounding," and dumped them here for blog-a-day. I'm a hack, but you can feel comfort in knowing I'm not being paid for this.

What are your favorite cinematic sounding video game scores?

DQ VIII. I full orchestral scores. Ni No Kuni is pretty awesome, too.

Like Rangergirl, I really like the DQVIII soundtrack.  I don't know of that many other fully orchestrated soundtrack, but I think Grandia is, at least there's a version of it, and I like that quite a bit.

Never played either, not an RPG guy. I'll have to check out those soundtracks. And I never said it had to be orchestral just cause my picks were, just "cinematic sounding" in general.

Hell, say the original chiptune Zelda music if you want. lol

Lunar has a few songs that sound orchestraited but really weren't but thats okay they still sound good XD

But also I am a huge fan of any Dragon Quest music done orchestral. I know there are actually a few CDs out there that have almost all the music done by an orchestra.

I never said it had to be orchestral, just cinematic sounding, so really it can be non-orchestral and still be that.

Dragon Quest is very popular for soundtrack, lol. I'd play more RPGs if I didn't know they weren't my thing.

It's cool with me! I have been on a MGS kick. After beating Rising, I'm replaying 4. Man, they sure went all out on that game. =-)

I only actually played the first two, but the music is great! Glad you're enjoying 4 and Rising.

I prefer the MGS2 theme to the original as well. Other than that though I still wish the series stuck with its original Japanese composer. Yeah, Williams made the score more movie-like (it's not like that saved MGS4 anyway), but I still think the original MGS had by far the most memorrable tunes. Or maybe I just seem to prefer Japanese composers. I don't know...

What can I say, I seem to enjoy songs by American composers with the last name Williams. lol

I do like the song at the beginning of original MGS though, when Snake is in the water, more haunting and quiet in contrast to the Gregson-Williams triumphant MGS2 opening.
