If for one minute Disney thinks bringing in John Williams to score episode VII, will lure me and those like me back to Satr Wars, they are sadly mistaken.

his scoring of the prequels was kind of lackluster if you ask me....

I agree. I told my wife only one of the prequels I liked was the III one. Mostly for the ending.

I think that he may be past his prime.  Star Wars came out in 77 and he had done stuff before then.

I think they know the movie will be a hard sale and will do anything to make it work. Including making Justen Bieber a young Jedi.

Beiber?  If that is true, there is no way in hell that I will ever see this new trilogy.

No, lol, I was just making a point on how far they would go.

Honestly, while I'm not going to dispute the quality of these films until they release, I think they are basically sitting on a goldmine and are nowhere even close to that desperate.

VII is pretty much guaranteed to do well, based on the Star Wars title alone, plus the fact Disney (Avengers, one of the highest grossing movies of all time) and Abrams (new Star Trek movies are the highest grossing in the franchise) are attached, and the only way the next two after that don't make money is if that one is as poorly received as the prequels, which I really do not see happening.

Again, I'm not disputing quality yet, I might wind up thinking they suck (though I doubt that, too), but desperate for sales I do not think these films will be.

For sure. Disney is in a fine position here, and I think people would be surprised to find out just how many of us Star Wars fans think that Lucas not being involved with the new flicks can only be a good thing.

Under his rule we got Midichlorians, an angsty Anakin who just so happened to build C3PO, a young Anakin awkardly piloting a ship to legitimize a single line of dialogue that Obi Wan said in Episode IV, Anakin eagerly embracing the Dark Side because he doesn't understand the concept of self-fulfilling prophecy, and Padme dying of a broken heart minutes after giving birth, because apparently her newborn children weren't enough of a motivation to live. Oh, and the "romance" between Anakin and Padme for that matter. Ugh.

So...yeah, I think we're going to be fine without him. :)

Come on... its gonna be better than the last 3 movies.

I wish I could agree with you, but I can'nt.

It will be hard for me to beleive Disney can fill George Lucas in Star Wars im not sure they can do it without messing up the whole series, its a huge risk its like Tecmo tryong to do a NIS game lol!! If they can some how pull it off i will be impressed but in reality i dont think they can and i say bring back Mark Hamil and Harrison Ford and they may have a shot lol!!

Homelessrook

People are not looking at it that way. It is the new generaton of Star Wars fans that are giving this crap Idea a chance.

GeminiMan78

I don't  know, considering how Lucas handled the last three movies Its not like they would have to try real hard to make something superior. Then again they have not produced a good live action or animated movie in almost 25 years as far as I'm concerned.

Oh come on, Avengers and Wreck-It Ralph were really fun movies.

Cyberxion

07/27/2013 at 12:46 PM

Hell yeah they were! Wreck-It-Ralph in particular was surprisingly awesome. I didn't expect the flick to be as fun as it was, and it had a fair bit 'o heart too.

Homelessrook

07/27/2013 at 01:52 PM

The Avengers had some good moments, but it could have been better. Wreck it Ralph was okay too.

GeminiMan78

07/27/2013 at 07:03 PM

My bad ,I forgot Disney bought out Marvel. Avengers was good, want to see Wreck it Ralph. But those are gems in the rough and technically from outside studios. I was refering more to inhouse productions.

Homelessrook

07/27/2013 at 07:05 PM

I can see that.

Super Step Contributing Writer

07/27/2013 at 07:40 PM

I see your point, but my point was also that Disney didn't fuck anything up for Marvel's movie, which is partly why I have faith they won't fuck up LucArts' property. Everyone was afraid of what they would do until Avengers came out, and most people wound up really liking it.

I'm not arguing whether or not anyone in this conversation will enjoy it, I just don't see them "Disneyfying" the franchise any more than they "Disneyfied" Avengers, and I don't see this trilogy not being successful is all.

As for the twenty-five years comment, I'm curious in genuine curiosity, non-dickish way what the last movie they produced in-house and you liked was. I disagree with you, but I was also born in 1990, so I'm not going to argue the point it's probably because I grew up with certain of their movies. lol

GeminiMan78

07/27/2013 at 08:03 PM

I agree with you, It is really going to ride more on the writer, director, and producer in how it comes out. Disney is really there just to collect a royalty check. They will have some say but yeah I don't think they would be arrogant enough to try and Disney-fy it.

I was born in 1978 and grew up mostly watching things like The Jungle Book, The Black Couldron, Robinhood, The Sword & the Stone, mostly stuff from the 60's and 70's. Although I was a kid when they came out I wasn't too keen on The Little Mermaid or Beauty and The Beast. The last one I thought was good was The Lion King and I was a teenager when that one came out. And I certainly have not out grown animation so I know its not that I got too old to enjoy this kind of stuff. It just there was a certain vibe that the older films had that has been lacking from all the more recent stuff. Also the character designs and inviroments get more and more simplified and dumbed down. The animation is still smooth, but the overal look is just not the same. And I'm not the only one to notice this either. I was reading a story the other day and it was making a comparison between Snow White and the modern Disney stuff. That movie is over 70 years old and puts modern Disney animated films to shame.

I really enjoy seeing this back and forth chat. I really am not trying to bash the brand, I have just seen what Disney has become from what it use to be. Which you clearly point out.

I'm a big fan of the duel of fates from Episode 1. Its the song that plays during the fight between Darth Maul and the Jedi. I love this song.Other than that, the music from the prequels are not that great compared to the Original Tril.

Homelessrook

07/27/2013 at 06:42 PM

I agree.

Vice's Assistant

07/27/2013 at 07:36 PM

I second that. Duel of the Fates is awesome. I also like the ending theme on Episode II. Other than that most of the music in the prequels is forgetable at best. Not really terrible but nothing to fantasic.

Personally, I've enjoyed quite a few of JJ Abrams's movies over the last decade or so, and that gives me confidence that the new Star Wars movies will be good. If it was just Disney heading this up in all its faceless, mega-corp glory, then I'd be worried, but I think Abrams can pull it off. Also, it depends on your expectations. The quality and impact of the originals would be hard to replicate but there is still plenty of room shy of that for some dang good movies.

Homelessrook

07/27/2013 at 06:42 PM

He completely screwed up the last Star Trek movie. I will not watch it.

daftman

07/27/2013 at 06:54 PM

I haven't seen Into Darkness yet but I liked his first Star Trek movie, so I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree lol

Aboboisdaman

07/27/2013 at 04:00 PM

I really don't see how it could get any worse than the prequels. For me it ended with Return of the Jedi. I will probably watch these movies, but I don't have much hope and my expectations are pretty much non existent lol.

Homelessrook

07/27/2013 at 06:41 PM

I really only liked the third of the prequel, you know when Vader stepped off of the table and crushed everything.

Vice's Assistant

07/27/2013 at 07:45 PM

The only thing that will sell me on the new Star Wars movies is some honest fan apperication of the other canonical stuff beyond the films. I know its vast, compleciated, and nerdy but going off of the films just limits the scope. Not to mention every film has their flaws that are probably going to be fubared in VII to make it work.

Homelessrook

07/28/2013 at 08:09 AM

Oh so true, all the films are not perfect and some attempts to further the story in animation has had its' ups and downs. Do you remember the Ewok TV movie that came on in the late 80's? It was live action but not very good. I will still enjoy the universe in print, at least there is that.

Vice's Assistant

07/28/2013 at 08:18 AM

I remeber both the Ewoks movies and animated TV show. Neither great but really interesting from a canonical perpective. I have or used to have a VHS copy of the Droids animated movie and that I think explained what CP3-O and R2 were oringial doing before the orinigal trigolgy... I think. It's been a long time sinced I watched it.

I like some of the episodes.

Look, I can understand your concerns and Disney can be a dick at times, but look at the situation from this perspective; at first we were all worried that they would screw Marvel after Disney bought the company, but so far, the comics are still going fine without changes and the Marvel movies under Disney have had great reception. Besides, we still haven't seen any footage of the new film and we can't base negative assumptions just because Disney bought Star Wars and there's nothing else to back that.

Just my 2 cents.

I think Williams' scores for the prequels were one of the best things about them. That being said, he doesn't generate memorable work like he used to. It's probably just a job for him now. I'm hoping for the best, though.

if that's the case, could the possible cameos of some of the original characters change thee mind?
