Microsoft's Xbox Mistakes

Now the Xbox One seemed like it was mounted with what have been many mistakes but Microsoft had made many with it prior to its release but before we get into that, let’s dwell in the past. Now this isn’t singling out Microsoft. I will get around to Sony and Nintendo as well in my next blogs. Let’s start with though with the original Xbox. There are two things that stand out. The first thing is the horrible controller that was ridiculously big. It was insane how large it was. It was nice the eventually got around to releasing a smaller one after all the criticism.  The second and last that I can recall is that they left the system in the dust when the 360 came out. They had nothing for it. All those Xbox fans had to switch over immediately to play anything new.

The original Xbox was a rough start, especially content wise. They could have secured more titles. I can’t imagine how they would have survived without Halo and Bioware. With that said the 360 had grander mistakes but become an extremely successful system. No longer did Sony have the comfortable domination as they had with the PS2. This time it was playing catch up and with its own mistakes. Microsoft though was inclined to release early and with systems that had problems that they didn’t know was a severe as they predicted. Doing so came at a huge cost of Microsoft over 1 billion dollars with the infamous RROD. Many people (including myself) had systems that suddenly stopped working and had the red ring of death.

RROD

I would also say it was a big mistake for them not to include a hard drive in every system. This ended up straining developers when Microsoft forced a policy that every game had to be at a max limit of 50 GB. This policy was to please all of those who didn’t have a hard drive but would was able to play XBLA titles with a memory card. This was just limiting the 360 and many games broke the limit. It was either get rid of the policy or have a reduced amount of content.

Don

The last thing I would say is games haven’t been Microsoft’s strong suit. They are starting strong in the first year but Microsoft seems to get complacent with Halo, Fable, Forza, and Gears. It will be interesting to see the turnaround. That needs to happen. Their line-up with Xbox One looks good but before that the whole DRM debacle lead into a crazy PR nightmare that would have embarrassed any company. Them being touted doing a 180 has hurt them badly. They have likely lost some fans on principle for trying include such a policy but not controlling their own message to be clear and concise was their biggest mistake Microsoft has ever done with the industry. The turnaround is a good thing but it did so with a black eye. It also makes them lead look like a follower by changing the policy of it and with independent developers self-publishing rights. Both which as I will say are good changes but construes their vision of the Xbox One.

Xbox360 was the last console I bought this gen, before WiiU, and I haven't really played many of it's games. I really only was interested in games like Lost Odyssey, Deadly Premonition and indie games like Fez. I was never big on Halo or CoD, but I do like BF3 for on PC for some wierd reason. Even now the XboxOne games that stands out to me is Dead Rising 3 and Ryse, because I like zombie and greek/roman theme games. I enjoy RPGs on DS/PSP/PSOne/PC and I feel like Xbox brand and marketing has never really effectively reached out to my taste in games that much. I read recently that Microsoft is planning an event to "rebrand" and possibly announce a cheaper model of XBOXOne in November. Gee, they sure seem to be followers now and not leaders. I'm not hating on XBOX at all. I'm neutral on hardware, and I'll eventually buy into a MS system, but after everything that's happened I'm just gonna stick with my 3DS/PS4 combo for now. DR3 looks so damned good though. I must resisit! I must resist! I must...! I...! ...!

Dead Rising 3 does look good but I am disappointed with it though. I see it having an identity crisis. They are trying to make it more scary and all the zombies have that dark tone look.

True. They did seem to suddenly show goofy pics after everyone complained about the dark tone to the demo/trailer. Even MS games are suspect now. It's like MS is the Dark Souls of new game consoles, must be very careful to protect our souls/wallets. Shields up everybody! Tread slowly!

To be fair to Microsoft, what killed the original Xbox so abruptly was a pissing contest between Microsoft and Nvidia, which made the Xbox's GPU. Microsoft's choices were either settle with Nvidia or discontinue the Xbox, and I'm sure they chose the latter because it was less pricey to just pull the plug on a system that wasn't selling that well anyway and put out the 360 as the first "next-gen" system. Of course, doing this gave them a different set of headaches, namely the RRoD and the E74 that were the result of Microsoft's shoddy workmanship. as they tried to rush the 360 to market.

I've never been a fan of Microsoft or the Xbox brand, but I did get a 360 before I got a PS3. This was mostly because at the time I bought my 360, which was in 2007, the PS3 was super-expensive and didn't have any games I wanted other than Virtua Fighter 5. The PS3's VF5 did not support online play. Frankly, it's a miracle that the PS3 did as well as it did given how badly its launch was bungled. For me, the PS3's killer app was Valkyria Chronicles, which didn't come out in 2008, and by that time I'd soured on the 360 after the headaches I'd experienced with the E74 failure I was hit with.

Most of what I did like about the 360 came early in its life-cycle, stuff like Tales of Vesperia, so that was still less incentive for me to stick with the 360 over the PS3, which had more of what I really wanted by that point.

While they quit selling hardware quickly they also with what I was referring to more was not having any new games. They are pratically doing it now again while Sony is heavy with major games they are publishing showing their commitment.

If Microsoft would have let competent PRs handle getting to correct info on the Xbox One they could have saved themselves a lot of embarrassment but coming out the way they did and unloading the uninformative information about the Xbone it screwed them and in my opinion everyone of there PRs should have got fired on the spot. So by them doing this they were forced to reverse thre DRM policy and made Microsoft look like incompetent asses and in the process lost alot of loyal customers myself included.

Even if MS' pr was perfect, I still wouldn't get a XB1.  It wasn't going in the direction I wanted to go.  Now that it has changed, I can consider getting the console down the road.  Digital games may be the way gaming ends up, but it's not for me.  If I can't hold it in my hands and have the value of my collection go up, then I'm just throwing my money away.

I'm not a big fan of MS, but I enjoyed the XB and the 360.  Both have consoles have many of my favorite games.

For the original XBOX, while I did get around to buying the smaller controller, I genuinely preferred the fat one. It just fit. It's not my favourite controller of all time or anything but I certainly didn't think it was bad.

I agree on all of these except maybe the whole hard drive thing. That was still a question mark back in 2005 and the basic one I think helped the 360 look a lot more attractive to the general audience than the PS3. One I'd add is not snagging Bioware before EA. They could have had Mass Effect and Dragon Age all to themselves.
