What Blake Is Playing

Hey guys, so I'm back to the world of the sober, and I don't like that. So I'm escaping soberland to videogame land. And it is glorious. So what have I been playing?

Rise of the Triads

This game runs like arse on my computer for some reason. I was like, yeah I can get 50 fps on battlefield 3 on the highest settings, I could max this out no problems. Nope. To acheive 60 FPS (The minimum you need to play a twitch shooter IMO) I had to drop this sucker down to medium, turn the ambient occlusion, bloom, and shadows off. So now it runs well, but it kinda looks like arse. Hopefully they patch this soon.

Do I care though? No, because I shot a dude with a rocket launcher and his eyeballs got stuck on the camera for a few seconds. I shot a dude with a machine gun and he split in half, spraying blood every where and sending internal organs everywhere. Don't worry though, the game is very cartoony, so it's not like this is ultra disturbing. The gunplay is smooth and it feels good, there are secrets everywhere, and the humour is humourous. This is everything Duke Nukem Forever should have been.

 Mighty Quest For Epic Loot

This game may devour my life. Ok, so the premise of this game is simple - raid other players castles and steal their money. It plays like a Diablo clone for the most part in this style. However, there are no maps, you have to navigate the castle purely by guessing where to go and there's a time limit. If you don't get to the end in time, you don't get their sweet glorious loot.

If you manage that though, you spend your sweet glorious loot on building up your castle. You can put different monsters and traps in your castles, and change the castles layout. There's a limit on how many enemies you can place, and how many rooms you can have, so you have to make the absolute best of what you can in the limitations. I've stopped 12 people from reaching my castle. I've taken over twice as many as that. I've lost about the same amount. But damnit, I'm going ot keep on playing. It's free and in beta atm if you want to play it. Which I highly recommend you do, because it's awesome.

Skyrim

Back to Skyrim. Curse you modders! I've got like over 100 mods on it now! Ok, so my game now looks like that. I have an enb mod on, a realistic lighting mod on, a bloom mod on, and many other graphics mods. I've also got a mod that makes me die of hypothermia, thirst, hunger, and makes it so I have to bathe and sleep regularly. I have a mod that gives me better hair styles, and makes it so people aren't so ugly. I've got a mod that makes the game gorier, making cuts in bodies, better looking blood and splurting effects. I've got a mod that adds baby dragons. I've got a mod that adds a fucking mammoth as a pet. i've got a mod that gives me a bunch of viking, pirate, medieval and other styles of armour. And most importantly... SKYRIM IS AMAZING WHEN MODDED! Seriously, every problem I had with this game has been modded out! Hooray for mods!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So that's me done. Have you played any of the games above (Apart from skyrim, which is obvious, but you can talk about it anyway. What have you guys been playing? Do you want to play any of those games? Let me know. Or don't, I'm not the boss of you.

I hadn't played any of those games.  I'll get to Skyrim someday.  I'm currently playing some old stuff.  Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (DS) and Metal Gear (PS3).  The Metal Gear I'm playing is part of the recently released Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection, so it's sort of new. Laughing

Rise of the Triad came oud like a couple of hours ago lol. And really? You haven't played Skyrim? That's pretty insane.

Is portrait of ruin any good?

I'm enjoying it.  I have yet to dislike any of the "Metroidvania" Castlevania games.  I finished Dawn of Sorrow a couple weeks ago.  Portrait of Ruin is not has hard.

I think of the three DS ones, Portrait of Ruin is probably the easiest. Order of Ecclessia can be a serious pain in the ass when it wants to be. Still need to play DoS.

Those first two games sound like fun. I appreciate the to-the-point title of Mighty Quest for Loot.

Rise of the Triad has piqued my interest.  I never played the original, and having an old school shooter with better graphics sounds awesome.  I have been messing around with Gunpoint and Metroid Prime 3.

I dipped in and out of the original, but I love the hell out of this so far. It's a ton of fun and I can't wait to jump into the multiplayer!

 Also, gunpoint is fucking fantastic!

I wouldn't mind having a pair of those Bullfrog pants from Gunpoint.

Oh fuck yeah. I'd just constantly jump through windows lol.

I'm surprised RotT takes a bit of power to run. I played the original, but those levels were horribly designed and confusing as hell. I didn't make it that far. I could appreciate the humor in it easily enough though.

It doesn't take a powerful pc to run, just to run well. I ended up tweaking it now so it looks pretty good, but not amazing.

You'd love this version though. The levels are easy to navigate, there are a ton of secrets, and it's just fun. It's pretty much Duke Nukem 3D for the modern era.

Yeah that sounds great, and I'd love to play it... but my laptop couldn't even handle Magicka remember? lol. Cry

Blake Turner Staff Writer

I found out why that was. Magicka doesn't support integrated graphics cards lol. It's not that it was too powerful, it's just that they overlooked that type of system.

I think Skyrim has taken over Half Life as the game with the best mods now... it's fucking incredible!

Mighty Quest for Epic Loot sounds like a really awesome idea...and saves the developers the trouble of designing levels lol. I've been playing Shin Megami Tensei IV on my 3DS lately. Really great RPG.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

08/01/2013 at 04:19 PM

It really is. And it's free! Also, they create a bunch of levels too which is cool!

I'm thinking of buying a 3DS just for that btw lol.

SMT IV is a great place to start with the 3DS but they're a ton a great games on there now. Definitely a recommended buy.

Well, actually I'm buying it for fire emblem, but this is good too! Partly want a vita for Persona IV Golden though...

Hey, I just bought Fire Emblem! It was for the $30 eShop credit but I'm looking forward to playing it sometime too Smile

Really should get Skyrim sometime. It looks glorious. Although I don't know if I should start with older Elder Scrolls games.

I've been addicted to Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's the game I had spent more time on and it never gets old. It is simply addictive.

Morrowind has the best world imo but Skyrim has MUCH better gameplay. I wish that there was some stuff from Morrowind in Skyrim though, as it is by far the deepest of the games, but definitely get skyrim. Not on PS3 though. Dear God not on PS3!

Alex-C25

08/01/2013 at 07:52 PM

Don't worry about the PS3 version since I don't even have a PS3 to begin with lol.

Mighty Quest For Epic Loot - Looks fairly kick-ass, and I dig the hell out of the name. I may have to give it a look.

I'm going to make a video of it tomorrow. I think it's pretty good despite some issues. It is in beta atm though, so hopefully they get ironed out/

The last Elder Scrolls I played was Morrowind. Haha. Well that's not necessarily true, but I wasn't a fan of Oblivion. I'm pretty much just stuck on Guild Wars 2. That's all I have been playing right now. I'm waiting on my sister to return KoA, and then I'll probably get back on that.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

08/03/2013 at 12:10 PM

Skyrim is much better than Oblivion. Morrowind is still my favourite world to explore because it is so unique, but skyrim is pretty awesome.

Also, what server are you on in Guild Wars 2? I'm pretty keen to jump back into that game again!

Darby Lawson Staff Alumnus

I really do want to play Skyrim, and I'll be getting that on my computer. With the exception of my dad, I think everyone I know plays on console, but I always like that genre on PC better.

Oooooh, yes, a friend on GW2! haha. I play on Tarnished Coast. It's actually the most popular and therefore, the busiest, so there's always tons of activity. Especially in the starter areas, because you always have people starting and restarting events.

Awesome! I might reroll a character on their or something... a bit over mine atm. Also, Asrealasitgets is pretty big on Guild Wars 2. I miss how damn pretty that game is!

You should! It is really pretty haha. And yeah I enjoyed the thief and the ranger the best.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

I was a Sylvari Ranger last time. Mainly because of the pets. The Fern Hound is awesome! I want to try a magic class this time.

I'm currently trying out a necromancer...I liked it in the previous guild wars, so I thought I would see the changes. Mesmer is kinda meh. It gets really boring, I thought. I never did like them. If you played the first Guild wars, then you'll know you had to specialize in a single element when you played an elementalist. In this one, you can switch between all the elements consistently and its a lot of fun, and gives you good combat variety. Best weapon on elementalist is dual daggers in my opinion.

My ranger and thief are both sylvari. I think I like their areas the best.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

08/04/2013 at 12:12 PM

They really are gorgeous! I think the Sylvari areas are the most beautiful and original. The human and Charr I find kind of meh. I'm trying out a Necromancer atm. Might try an Elementalist, but I just hate their clothes.

Darby Lawson Staff Alumnus

08/04/2013 at 12:25 PM

I do too. Their clothes leave a lot to be desired. Haha. I did just look at some armor sets on the trading post, which looked cool for light armor. Its called Winged armor, and it cleverly has a mantle which looks like a giant pair of wings. They might have to stay hidden though haha, but the rest of the armor looks cool. I almost have enough karma to purchase elite karma armor for my thief, and the sylvari cultural armor looks nice. If you can afford a whole set. Human area gets boring fast, but its the easiest to level in.

You can actually get sylvari cultural armor that looks like the Nightmare Court.

Lately, I've still been playing State of Decay and Secret of Mana. State of Decay is really impressive, especially considering it's an indie title given the scope of it.

There are tons of amazing mods for Skyrim - lately, the 'Frostfall' mod in particular has caught my eye. If you don't mind, which graphics mods in particular are you running? What do you think of them?

Blake Turner Staff Writer

08/03/2013 at 12:08 PM

I use the Enhanced Shaders ENB now, because it isn't as saturated as some other enb settings, but I used imaginator to add more colour to the game. I've also got realistic lighting and  enhanced climates or whatever it's called, because it stops the nights being so damn dark when you have realistic lighting. It also adds a shit ton of of weather effects. The most important aspect of my graphics setting though is Skyrim Project optimisation, because it only renders what you can see and allows for a much smoother experience.

I'm running frostfall now, and it's a lot of fun. That along with the eat, drink, sleep, bathe mod makes for a phenomenal experience.

I want to play State of decay, but unfortunately it's not available in australia at this time.
