Year Of The Snake continues

I had  taken a little break from my Year of The Snake (YOTS) project.  During my break I played and beat Snipe elite V2. I actually played it a few times through trying to get as many trophies as possible. And I played and finished Call of Duty: Big Red One. I also just started playing Silent Hill Origins (PS2) until I decided it was time to get back to YOTS.

Year of the Snake:

A little refresher course for you that are just joining in on the fun. This year, 2013, is the Chinese Year of the Snake. I decided it would be a perfect year to play all my Metal Gear games to celebrate YOTS.  If you want to catch up on all that has come before today, just back track my blogs and read them and it will bring you up to speed where I am.

Metal Gear:

Metal Gear is the ultimate weapon-an all- terrain, nuclear-equipped, walking battle tank

*all photos courtsey of GH*

This is my first time to play Metal Gear. And I am playing it on my Playstation 2 from the port that is included on Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence.

Here is a description of the plot I copied and pasted from Wikipedia...

.."The first Metal Gear game for the MSX follows Solid Snake, a rookie member of the FoxHound special operations unit. He is sent by his superior Big Boss to the fictional South African fortress Outer Heaven, with the goal of finding the missing squad member Gray Fox and investigating a weapon known as Metal Gear."

The codec, where it all began.

I am only about an hour into the game and suprisingly I am really enjoying it. I started playing it before and I would play just a little bit then stop.  But now that I have gotten deeper into the game I am having fun and I cant wait to get even deeper into the game.

Boss Battle:  The Shotmaker!

I guess this is the first Boss Battle ever for the Metal Gear series. And suprise suprise...Snake has no weapons!

What will he do? How can he survive?   Im not saying. You will have to play the game for yourself to figure it out!  hahahahah

So this is where it all begins and I am excited about playing this game.  It's fun to see that all the things that happen in future Metal Gear games and that I thought were first happening in those games...all originated here. Just for a small example. Snake finds a cardboard box and uses it to sneak past cameras!

So YOTS is back and I invite all of you to join in on the fun and play a few Metal Gear games for yourself and see just how awesome the series is.

Or you could just sit back and let me have all the fun and read about it all here.

I think your images are too big GH. Try making them smaller. If they are too big it pushes the text to the right.

Aaron:  Yes! I resized the photos and I can see all the text. Thank you.

The old 2-D Metal Gear games are the ones I'm most familiar with.

Cary: I'm discovering them for the first time. I didnt think I would enjoy them but now I am having a blast playing them.  I can't wait to finish this one so I can start MG2 which I heard was even better than this one.

I may go back and play some Metal Gear Solid.  The only problem is the massive amount of Wii games that found their way into my hands since I finished MGS2.

Transmet:  Forget the Wii. This is the year of the snake! Next year can be the year of the Wii....hahahahah

If I have a copy of twin snakes, it will be played on the Wii.  I appreciate you love of metal gear solid.  I am disappointed in myself for slacking ever since MGS 3 came out.

I'm replaying MGS2 at the moment and might follow with replaying MGS4. Really a great series. I haven't put much time into the original MG games but they sound like they're worth a go

TheMart:  I havent found a bad MGS game yet......except, for some reason I can not get into MGS Peace Walker.  Everytime I start to play it I stop and just dont feel like playing it. I know its a good game because I played it half way through on the PSP.

Yeah I have it on the MGS Collection and started it directly after MGS3 so maybe my lack of a break from MGS is the reason i'm in the same boat as you. I'll try go back to it once I get through MGS2 at some stage. It seems like a nice change of pace with the mission breakup.

I recently rage quit Metal Gear a bit.  I saved.  I know I save.  And, the game loaded a good bit before my save point.  I had equipment missing and I had to do a lot of stuff all over again.  I was pissed, so I quit.  I started Metal Gear Solid and to be honest, it hasn't aged that well.  I think I'll play my Twin Snakes version on the GC. Cool

James:   You did save. I know because the same thing happened to me over and over. I had to persoanl message a guy on Youtube that has the original MSX version and he told me what I was doing wrong.  You can only save in an elevator!  I was not aware of that. but now, whenever I make a little progress I find an elevator and save. Because if you don't and you die two hours into gameplay...I think you start all over again!    Yeah, that's why I suggested you play MGS1 first.  Because it has aged, but for me it is still the best.  The Twin Snakes just didnt cut it for me.

Didn't know that.  Thanks.  You'd think they'd tell you that in the game. Laughing

The only Metal Gear game I have is MGS 4. I'm only part of the way through it, but I absolutely love it. I'm at the part where they are in Shadow Moses Island (where I think the first game took place?) and the game is really good at building up suspense. When I told my friends about it, I said, "In this game the point is not to get a lot of kills! You want to avoid action as much as possible!" and of course they were very confused lol.

That Kid:   the return to shadow Moses Island in MGS4 was and is a very emotional part of the game for me. As snake and Otacon reflect back in the game....This is where it all begin.  If you had of played MGS1 first you would understand it just a wee bit better and you would have an emotional connection to the game.     Your frineds are used to playing current FPS games that reward lots of kills.  They will never  get it

I didn't know the box thing originated in the NES ones. I could never get past a particular screen in NES Metal Gear ... it was a screen that was very early on, too. I think the guard had hawk vision and could see through bushes.

Also, I looked up the Zodiac out of curiosity, and apparently this is the year of the Water Snake, specifically. In other words ... Liquid Snake!

Joe:  I'm finding a lot of the MGS stuff we are familiar with started with the first one.  The Electrified floor,  the box, the gas mask, the guards sleeping.  Im finding more as I progress through the game.  And yeah, I realized this is actually the Year of the Snake.....that's why I started using that as my theme.    pretty interesting to say the least!

Yeah, I know you used it as your theme for that reason, but I guess the Chinese also associate different elements with these animals for different time periods. For instance, I was born in the year of the horse, 1990, and within a specific time frame, it was the time of the Metal Horse, where other years it can be the Water Horse, etc.

This is the year of the Water Snake ... or Liquid Snake, if you will.

Joe   There is an unlockable camo in MGS3 that is called Water snake...perfect for this year.    Yes, water snake = Liquid snake!

I just recently started collecting NES games again. Metal Gear was one of the first ones I looked for. Found it in pristine condition at the flea market last weekend for only ten bucks. Think my wife is going to get me the Legacy Collection for my birthday this year. That is going to be cool! Year Of The Snake continues on.....yes!

Perhaps I need to play my copy of this game. I never bothered with it at the time but perhaps now would a fine time to. It is retro enough to fit into a retro summer gaming session...
