There was so much hype for this game on WiiU virtual console, and now that it's here...crickets!?
I've never actually played this game so I was curious to get some thoughts on it.

You prolly hear crickets because the ones that were hyped are stuck to the game now, lol. Ill be like that next week with Dragons Crown.

I never could get into EarthBound, which is surprising.  I felt the battle system was too antiquated and the storyline was so nonsensical that it was hard to follow and goals were unclear as a result.  The game was packaged with a strategy guide in the US for that reason, I think.  I'd be more excited about Shantae on 3DS VC, myself.

The Wii out sold the Wii U this past quarter, so I am not surprised. Something has to give with this system. I am not slamming it, I want it to do well but Nintendo is just giving us the same ol games some just in HD.

I've seen alot of talk about it on other sites, just not this one.  Ign has had several features on it in the last couple weeks.

I downloaded it the day it came out.  When it was new I remember renting it for weekend and really liking it, but I hadn't played again until I recently got it.  I'm currently only a few hours in, but I am really enjoying it.  It has a very cute, nostalgic vibe to it that makes you miss childhood.  The fighting is really simple, but not really any more so than most old RPGs.

I have never liked the art style. Back when it came out I was looking forward to the PSX, and I didn't think it stood up to games like Chrono Trigger from a graphical standpoint. I also hated the idea of a modern day RPG, because I played RPGs to live out my fantasy of dragons, demons, and magic.

Years later, I still don't like the art style, but I would like to play it. Sadly, I don't have a Wii U. If the game ever comes to the 3DS (come on, Nintendo, SNES games on 3DS would be killer!) I will certainly pick it up.

It has always been on a list of games that I am interested in, I just never have gotten around to it.

I'm curious about the series.  I would be more into getting the games if there was ever a Mother series collection released on the 3DS or something.

Earthbound isn't for everyone, but I personally enjoyed it. The art style is unique, though some people may not enjoy the cartoony look of it, but overall the story is fantastic, if not a bit tough to decipher on a first playthrough, but if you can appreciate it, it's a fulfilling and rich storyline. One particular scene is especially powerful, when [Spoiler, I guess?]: Poo gets spiritually torn apart limb from limb by an enigmatic spirit in the final phase of his Mu training. [End maybe spoiler] That scene really stuck with me, as well as of course the last boss, but I'll leave that for you to get to :P

I played through Earthbound several years ago and loved it. It's an RPG that is so different from others that there are sure to be haters, but if you can get past the simple premise and old-school graphics, you will find a fantastic game full of charm and personality. It's also a really weird game that has some strange humor, but that only makes it stand out even more. I think the modern vibe is great. The story stands out above most RPGs; it's a story of friendship and love, and has a powerful ending. Please, give this game a try. It's one of my favorites.

I heard some talk on podcasts about Earthbound and some of the very strange things that can happen in the game. This has me really interested in playing it.

I wonder how many on this site own a Wii U.

Much like some guys here, I haven't played the game and i'm very interested in trying Earthbound. Same with the sequel and third part of the Mother trilogy, which i've been told that is the sadest game ever.

I never finished Earthbound and that's one of my regrets from growing up because I should have. It's a game that deserves to be played. The combat is very Dragon Quest-ish and the graphics lean towards a cartoony 8-bit. The music can be a little odd but boasts some very memorable tracks. The setting and story really make it unique though. It's '50s America as seen through a Japanese lens. There's really nothing else like it. Earthbound is one of those games that easily exceeds the sum of its parts.

I'm really digging it myself. There's a lot more to it than meets the eye. I like the overall art style of the game myself, they did a pretty good job on it. It isn't likely to unseat Final Fantasy VI or Lunar among my favorite 16-bit RPGs, but I'm really regretting not getting it back in 1995, because it was probably the best game I played that came out in July.

It's just too bad Nintendo didn't finish the N64 version of Mother 3, or move it onto the Gamecube instead of the Game Boy Advance as happened with Tales of Phantasia 2 (a RPG originally planned for the N64 that eventually became Tales of Symphonia).
