This week's vlogs for the Sourcefed and Phil Defranco Movie Club.

And for shits and giggles, and to serve my bullshit superstition about the number three, here's a dumb comparison between Pacific Rim and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The day I watched Pacific Rim, I also saw DotM on Netflix to compare. This one is just stupid, so it's "unlisted," but you should be able to see it if I give you the link, apparently.

Here you go.

In other movie/TV news, I also watched The Wolverine and have been watching Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood again, since the fourth season is finally on Netflix. A year after I cancelled my subscription (maybe a bit more time), and they still don't have season five ... uh huh. Also been watching Doug Walker's Avatar vlogs.

I don't know why I'm doing these vlogs, guess I just figure what the hell?

i've been thinking about buying FMA: Brotherhood for my brother.  Is it good?  I've watched the first series, but i hear this is closer to the manga and more adult....

Well, I would say they are equally adult. I definitely wouldn't recommend either if your brother is really, really young, that's for sure; but I guess you know that if you saw the first one.

This one is basically longer and more fleshed out, but they do rush through some of the stuff from the original series. For instance, the first FMA anime had a certain character's (my favorite)'s death as kind of a halfway point. In Brotherhood, that happens really early on, I think in the first season. They also add more characters, and the composition and art style change a bit, I'm guessing to appear more like the manga.

I do like the way they fleshed it all out a bit more, and I like a lot of the new characters you see, so it's definitely worth checking out I think, cause while it still has the same essential plot points, it's very different from just plain FMA.

hmmm, he's adult and I know he liked the first series, but I don't know if he's seen the second.  I want to surprise him though.  Thanks for the info.

Funny you should mention Mulan, it's one of my favorite Disney movies and I just watched it again last week. The dog has always seemed very out of place to me, too. He just doesn't match the style of the rest of the artwork. The movie was less about the villain and more about the other characters, so Shan Yu not being fully fleshed out as a character has never bothered me. And that was supposed to be a golden eagle, I think. Mongols have traditionally used them in falconry for hundreds of years.

Well, I watched it because Sourcefed told me to, basically, but I too watched it sometime last week I think. lol It's a good one, though I think my favorite of the Disney muicals is still Aladdin.

And yeah, I don't know what it is about that dog. Definitely looks a bit odd here.

Shan Yu never bothered me either. As an adult, I can see why some might say he's a low-rent villain, but when I was a kid, I found him pretty cool, honestly. You're right though, the movie doesn't really need to focus on him, anyway.

I did not know that about his bird. Probably should have looked up what it was supposed to be, since I am not great at identifying birds, but oh well. I guess I will just look ignorant and potentially be called profane things by Youtube commenters. lol

No worries about the bird. Most movies use the cry of the red-tailed hawk in place of an eagle's cry anyway. Eagles don't have a majestic call at all, lol.

Because I had my head in the clouds, at first I confused Mulan over Pocahonntas untill you mentioned China. Also, very funny comparasion of Pacific Rim and the third Transformers. Really haven't gotten time to go to the movies, so sadly I think Pacific Rim will be gone.

Since i'm on the third volumen of the FMA manga, I need to know at which point should I stop the manga and see the original FMA series, since I heard it follows a different path from the manga and Brotherhood. After that, I could continue with the manga and then Brotherhood. So, the question is: do you know at which chapter or book does the anime derails from the manga?

I have only watched the original FMA series and about three and a half seasons of Brotherhood, so I am afraid I can not help.

I like Pocahontas as well as a kid I think, but I don't remember it nearly as well as the other 90s Disney movies, and I've definitely seen it the least times of any of them. It is also on Netflix, so I might watch it again.

i liked your thoughts on Mulan,as I've never seen it. After what you said about Orange Is The New Black I may have to check it out. Netflix is really doing some good shows,so it may be worth a look. Kind of a different take on the whole fish-out-of-water in prison theme. I saw Pacific Rim a few days ago and thought it was amazing. Better than any of the Transformers movies by a long shot.

Yeah, the first ep was slow for me, but that twist!

As for Pacific Rim, yeah, my favorite part was Ron Perlman's character. I thought that was comedy .... GOLD!

Mulan was great, probably one of Disney's best. I still want to see Pacific rim. You're good at commentary, Joe. Keep it up!

I don't know where I'd rank Mulan in terms of my favorite Disney movies. I think my favorite songs come from Aladdin, my favorite animation is Rescuers Down Under, and my favorite story and jokes are from ... see, that's a tough one. Mostly cause I'd say I like most Disney stories about equally, they all kind of follow a similar arc to some degree. Possibly Lion King for favorite story. Favorite jokes, I dunno.

I am glad that Pacific Rim is seeming to do well worldwide, even if in America, it wasn't as huge as I think they wanted it to be. Del Torro is talking sequel, and apparently it released in Japan quite a while after it did here, so there's hope yet! I'd say see it if you can.
