Laptops under $500

I did a comparison on New Egg and am eyeing these five laptops

If the link works, feel free to tell me what you would get. That Acer all the way on the right sounds like a good deal. I'm typing this from my mom's Lenovo Thinkpad E520, which is an awesome device, and anything is better than my Dell D620 at this point, honestly. Anyway ...

Could any of you help me find a good laptop

- Under $500 USD

- Good return/customer service policy

- Capable of some form of video editing, i.e. Adobe Premiere/Final Cut Pro could run

- Good webcam

- DVD player included, preferably can also run DVD-R, DVD-RW

- HDMI and USB ports

- Built-in speakers

- Headphone and Microphone jacks

or if a good laptop under $500 springs to mind but doesn't meet all the other criteria, feel free to mention it. I can live without a few things, mainly I just want something cheaper than $500 capable of handling a prosumer-level video editor.

And yes, obviously I've done and will be doing my own research, but when you blog on a site like this, you use your resources. Tongue Out

Related but unrelated question: why do people hate Windows 8? I think it looks ugly/cluttered, apparently the start button is in a weird place, and I don't need a touch screen which it looks made for, but none of these things are deal breakers. There something else I should be worried about here?

Windows 8 is great for smart phones or touch screen devices, but doesn't really translate well to pc. It's not really designed for pc, and it has some issues with the interface because of that.

I'd go an Asus for this type of stuff because they make reliable products and are just a pretty decent company. Avoid Dell at all costs.

Also, it's fucking terrible for gaming.

Yeah, I read Asus was ranked the #1 trusted the past two years or some such thing.

And my Dell is fine for the 8-bit gaming I do on it. lol

My last laptop was a dell. Performance wise, it was awesome. It was brilliant for gaming and stuff. Then it just died and was completely unfixable. Apparently a lot dell laptops just aren't built to last. Also, keep in mind I had the laptop for like a year.

This D620 I'm typing on actually lasted a VERY long time (still going, despite being slooow), but I imagine it wouldn't have had I done any video editing with it. Huh.

I was playing Super MEat Boy and my laptop ragequit. It was hilarious.

Hmm out of the five you posted, I would probably go with the Acer V3-551G-8454, because of the separate video memory, and dedicated grahics. I would also look into buying external hard drives if you're going to be doing a lot of video editing.

Later on down the line, I would also look into upgrading the RAM, if you feel your laptop needs a little kick.

Agreed, for your needs, which aren't plenty, that would be the best choice.

My frined had an Asus and said it was the best laptop he ever had and said it was good for games. Might wwant to look into one, but I think it really depends on your needs. My pc may not be the best thing out there but it atleast let's me post this lol

I don't need anything for gaming, but video editing might go hand in hand in terms of what power I need, I dunno.

I'd go with the Asus. though the Acer is good the specs on the Asus are better all out. got a 64bit version of windows and it has better RAM. Plus the ACer will only give you a low model battery which'll last you only 4 hours even on energy saver mode.

But seeing the Asus don't have HDMI, video or USB ports your best bet is Acer. If it were me I'd go with the Asus, but if you really really need the ports to plug in stuff, stick with acer but expect to buy a better battery later on.

That is very helpful information regarding the battery, thank you. I was only looking at 4-6cell Li-ion battery and 5-5.5 average battery life, but I guess those extra mAH, WHrs, and 3S2P figures mean something, I take it.
