This might be an odd choice, but I love the battle music from Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. That game takes a lot of flak due to a lot of reasons. It sure did have some great music though. It has my favorite battle theme out of all the Final Fantasy games.

Ooh, nice one! I actually convinced my mom to buy Mystic Quest for me when we went to buy Super Metroid, because it was only 20 bucks. It was certainly RPG light, but I played all the way through it twice, and I do remember some great music from it.

One of my favorite battle themes is the final boss theme from Viewtiful Joe 2, called "True Heroes." It's on a whole new level of epic. When I made it to this guy and heard the music, I was so excited; final boss themes SHOULD be epic. The theme portays a sense of hope while being exhilerating and fun. I love the organ too; nothing says final boss like an organ. 

 Another one of my favorites is Solaris Phase 2 from Sonic the Hedgehog (xbox). It begins very calmly, but quickly takes off at super sonic speed with the electric guitar. Talk about exhilerating! I absolutely love the use of the strings, intense, sharp, and awesome.

Persona 4 - Backside of the TV.  Everytime I hear that sound, I want to gear up and kick ass.  Just thinking about it puts me in the mood for P4.  

Strange Journey
I think this battle music is befitting of the games alien environment. It has a very typical 'heroic' RPG beginning and end, but there is a strange demonic chanting in between, then loops again. Surprisingly effective for a handheld game and sets the mood for fighting strange unknown enemies in a weird world. There is both a familiarity and discomfort with this music.


Dragon Quest IX
This music was stuck in my mind for a long time. I can hear it when I wasn't playing the game. It has a very chip tune vibe going and starts off hectic then slows down in the middle as if telling you your battle is taking too long, then starts again. I get a sense of a timer counting down during the battles, and the music tries to rush me along to get the fight over with. 
 

I will say that I do not necessarily love the Mother Brain Boss theme, but that is because it fills me with dread.  I can definitely remember finishing off Mother Brain, only to find out that she wasn't really dead.  Panic immediately set in.

Guile's theme ... it goes with everything. Also, the normal (as in pre-final) boss theme for Sonic 3 really does it for me. It gives a sense of danger without overplaying it. 

The entire soundtrack to Radiant Historia is fantastic but what else would you expect from Yoko Shimomura? The Edge of Green, one of the boss themes, is a favorite of mine.

There is so much energy here, so much rhythmic momentum, that you can't help but pound that boss for all you're worth. And like much of Yoko Shimomura's work, there is a ton going on in the song but it never sounds cluttered. Very impressive indeed.

Without a doubt the best battle theme i ever, heard freaking awesome!!

For me it has always been the first battle theme music in the original Lunar The Silver Star on the Sega CD. I always enjoyed it coming on whenever I hit a random enemy encounter.

I even found a way to add this music to a Brit Lit class re-enactment of a scene from MacBeth if only to help liven up that "dry" work from Shakes...

My second boss music choice would be the ZIo battle music from Phantasy Star IV. I just like how the music first starts up as if to prepare you for the upcoming battle. and as the battle beings it gives you that sense of forboding, that despite all the effort you put forth into the battle, it may already be lost the moment you stood up against Zio.

Any stage theme from the Mega Man X series. Take your pick! They are my favorites, and always get me to rock out.

Depends on the genre. As far as action titles, the boss music to Mega Man 3 still gives me the chills sometimes - probably my favorite track in that entire series (with the Shadow Man music being a close second.) The boss music in Kirby's Adventure from the penultimate fight - the one against that giant orb - is pretty spiffy, too, although you really need the sound effects to give it the full context.

For RPGs, I'm a big fan of the FF4 battle themes, as well as "An Earnest Desire of Grey" (final boss music) from Radiant Historia. The 8-bit version of the Dragon Quest 3 and 4 final boss themes are both pretty spiffy, too. Oh, and the turn-based battle music from the Magic of Scheherazade...
