Devil Summoner: the 3rd game in the series ( and prequel ) was released in 2006 and is a Shin Megami Tensie title produced and developed by Atlus.

The story takes place in modern Japan, and starts with a trial by fire. In order to earn the title of Raidou Kuzunoha the 14th, you needto complete the task set for you by a disembodied voice. After earning the title you are task with the defence of Tokio and are employed by a detective agency that specializes in occult practices. While the story is difficult to follow the city in which you play is done very good, the action takes place on the streets and districts of Tokio and theres the city map and a district over world map as well, the battles are a random attack by the spirit world which can only be seen by you but they do serve a good purpose all in for you to level up and you destribute points to abilitys as in most rpgs.  The leveling system is very balanced, the encounter rate is very high which is a bit odd for after the fourth battle it starts to get annoying you can recruit spirits to help you and you can summon them for battles or to take control of to reach places you couldnt normally go.

Devil Summoner is like any other Shin Megami Tensie game it is essentially a dungeon crawler thats heavy on the random battles and a bit lacking if your looking for a substantial story but this doesnt make it a bad game just a required taste. Raidou has few attacks, with just two sword attacks and an elemental loaded pistol, demons or spirits can be captured by using a elemental loaded pistol to weaken them then when they reach like 2% left you can capture them to use in future battles who can stay with you and level there abilities which add a type of strategy to your game.

The graphics by ps2 standards is excellent and captures the early modern Japan nicely, the music and sound effects are done very well and sets the mood perfectly and the voice acting is done well to, matter of fact really the only thing that could have been better would have been the story but overall this is an excellent game, not to mention the first edition print price was crazy expensive now you can get a second print from 25 to 35 bucks but this is a game i would recommend you get not to mention a nice addition to your ps2 collection.

My Score 4 out of 5 Very Good

I own this game, but I hadn't played it yet.  I didn't know of the series until the 2nd game.  I bought it and thought it was pretty good.  I got the 1st when I finally found it at a decent price.

I remember seeing this in the store and thinking it looked like a good game.

I really enjoyed the combat system of this one. It has all the same tropes of the rest of the MegaTen games, but it does so without the turn-based combat. The random encounter rate is a bit too high for what it is, but if you can get used to that, there's some great fun to be had.

I still can't believe how expensive this game has gotten over time. I picked up my copy around 5 years ago for $3 or $4 in the GameStop bargain bin, complete. I actually purchased 2 more copies to gift to others because it was so cheap.

I keep an eye out for Shin Megami Tensei games as a matter of principle lol. Really enjoying SMT IV right now, which is the first one I've actually given substantial time to.

Got this one, have about 10 hr in it...sigh. Another incomplete in the PS2 backlog. I wanted to get the second game but I was broke at the time. They had the collectors edition the  Jackfrost plush for $30. I have seen that same set on ebay for $150.
