I tend to disagree with them on a pretty regular basis. I don't put much stock in what they say. I respect the opinions of the people on this site a whole lot more. And I usually learn more about some games from all of you here.

Sometimes they suprise me and do a good job but I am with Matt, they suck at rating JRPGS.

which ones?

How in the hell can PvsZ2 get a better score than DC, SMT IV, and tales?

honestly, I'm not a fan of Game Informer.  The whole "owned by Gamestop" thing kind of freaks me out.

they also have a history of not reviewing JRPG's that well.

I am starting not to be. I honestly can not understand how they could expect gamers to accept those scores.

I had my suspicions back when they had the highest score for Prey.

Homelessrook

Prey was good, but I would not have given it a high score.

Exactly what I was thinking.  Having banners all over the store saying 9.25 score probably helped sales for them.

I maybe would give it a 7.5 but nothing higher. I really liked the concept of Prey and some of the game play but it was really flawed.

I don't know what GI is, but did you see Gamespot's review of DuckTales Remastered? It got a 4.5 lol. I haven't played the remake yet, but man I'm glad I got my original NES cart. They really shouldn't mess with the classics. Yell

I want to say I have it on the NES. I looked at the video today and it is okay but, I prefer it on the NES.

That review is atrocious. It's my first time playing DuckTales, and I can't even fathom such a low score. An 8, or an 8.5 at best, but a 4.5... wow. Bonkers.

lol yeah. That review was horrible. DuckTales is one of my all time favorite NES games. Maybe he was expecting a modern platformer and not a remake of a 20+ year old game?

I take all reviews with a serious grain, nay, a shaker of salt. I trust what my friends tell me more.

Homelessrook

I never really take the serious, but when you put a game like P Vs Z ahead of some really good RPGS I find issue.

The thing we tend to forget is that GI is a publication owned by a corporation that exists just to sell games. Which games are they going to sell more of: rpgs or something like Plants vs Zombies 2? Of course they're going to score PvZ2 higher. That is one of many reasons I'm not going to renew my powerup rewards card with them come fall.

I am thinking about not renewing mine. We have a 2nd and Charles now and they sell New and  old school games, plus books, music etc. They also buy your stuff or give store credit.

Never been a fan of GI. They tend to give exclusives and huge games really high scores, like even more ridiculous than IGN. Skyrim may be amazing but it is far too buggy to deserve a 10. And Uncharted 3 DEFINITELY doesn't deserve a 10. Btw, this is when I stopped reading them.

I tend to stick with Rockpapershotgun, PC Gamer, and occasionally gamespot.

I agree with you on both. Skyrim is good but buggy.

Funny thing is if I were to read the reviews with out seeing the number score I would have guessed Tales, DC, and Shin Meg would have had 9 to 9.5. Not sure why the number scores were so low especially against something like Plants vs Zombies. Thats why I like to get reviews from multiple sources. I honestly miss mags like GameFan and PSM. GI has annoyed plenty of times.

I got my copy in yesterday.  I only glanced at it and hadn't read it yet.  Didn't Tales and SMT4 get like a 8?

Homelessrook

08/15/2013 at 07:29 AM

They did, but P Vs Z got a 9.25. I mean come on, seems a little reversed to me.

I never played a PvZ game.  I know my kids love them.

Do not get me wrong, I have the first one on my Vita, but it is more like a Angry Birds type of game. They are fine on portables and fun to kill time with, but for really gaming it should not out score those other game imo.

I just renewed my Power Up Rewards membership at Gamestop and they asked me if I wanted the paper of digital version of GI. I told them, I haven't read that rag in years. I used to love GI, but I have no interest in reading it digitally and the print version changed it's print type to microscopic, probably to save pages. It's no longer fun to read when you have to squint all the time.

Oh and scores. It's fun to see what they give a game, but I don't let it influence my purchase. I look for other things like the descriptors "destructable environments". Kool-Aid Man says, "Oh Yeah!" to that.

I get GI but only because its kitch. I'm a sucker for print magazines. I usually read it in an hour, then I don't pick it up ever again really. There's nothing really worthwhile I get from it anymore.

I have yet to find a publication since EGM in the early 2000s that has many reviews I agree with. Ah, 1up/EGM how I miss you. No I don't consider the new EGM to count.

Never read then when I learned that were just the mouthpiece of gamestop. I think that migght've changed but haven't been tempted to give it a try again.

I was rather floored that PvZ2 got Game of the Month this month from them over so many other more deserving games like SMT IV, Tales of Xillia, or Dragon's Crown. I thought that at least SMT IV would carry it off, even though my personal favorites this month were Xillia and DC.

That said, I think it's a shame the industry revolves around Metacritic aggregates like it does, especially when games journalism is so spurious to begin with.  I've seen games with 90 MC averages that I thought were ass, and I've seen plenty of great 75-80 games that were largely brought down by one or two obscure websites whose 50s and 60s trashed all the great reviews the game got from more respected outlets (relatively speaking, of course).

I liked the look of their mag, but I'm with halochief, I haven't trusted reviews overly much since EGM.
