A traditional modern, or is it modern traditional? Anyway, a good song

Celestial Winds from the East

From: Okami

Remixed by: McVaffe

McVaffe is something of a legend on OCR. He got involved early on with the site and contributed quite a few remixes (his current total sits at 46...which is a ton). Like many prolific remixers, he took a hiatus from the hobby and the site, nearly four years in this case. This remix is the one he returned with. Okami is a game that seems to be loved by all who play it (I have a copy nestled in my backlog and...eventually...I'll play it) and the soundtrack is no small part of that. McVaffe here keeps the Japanese influence of the game in the instrumentation before introducing a more modern beat after more than a minute has elapsed. Strings bolster the traditional Japanese elements as an electric bass noodles in the background. A solo piano bit bridges back to the full ensemble before the song ends. If you're worried all those disparate parts won't gel, have no fear. Everything is balanced perfectly and it all sounds like it belonged together the whole time. The polish is second to none. So kick back, have a listen, and if you have time, maybe go save Japan for yourself. Okami HD is available on PSN, after all.

This is probably my favorite McVaffe remix. I love the blend of everything. McVaffe is one of the best, love his songs.

Yeah, everything is just done so well and the melodies are great too.

I wasn't actually digging the intro as much, but once it kicked into high gear around 1:24 and everything it did after that pretty much was great. At times, I did feel like maybe a bit too much was going on, but I quickly got over it. What's the most popular/recognized thing McVaffe has done on OCR, or would this be it?

I don't think he has one real standout remix, though this is a big one. Unlike a lot of remixers, he can work in multiple styles. He can do emotive solo piano (Cutman Sonata) as well as a salsa dance (Gemini Salsa) and a number of others. You don't necessarily know what you're getting with a McVaffe remix but it'll be good.

Really good post. If you haven't played Okami, you should. It is that great..... even though i'm still on the first dungeon and I haven't continued the game since May.

Like I said, I do have a copy of it, so it's just a matter of devoting the time. There are just so many games to play and so little time for them Undecided But I'm glad you liked the song Smile

I have yet to play this game and all this music does is compel me to finally take the plunge. Any version you recommend?

Well I haven't played it either, so I may not be the best to answer that...but it won't stop me from trying! I have the PS2 version. Got that when it was still the only one available. There's also a Wii version that adds motion controls for the celestial brush, which is a nice touch that doesn't really add or detract from the total experience (so I hear). Then there's the HD verion, which I think is only on PSN. It looks the nicest and I assume gives the option for tradition controls or Move, but I don't know. I like physical copies of things but the HD version is probably the best value.
