Blake's Thoughts on Pokemon White

So I got massively addicted to Pokemon Red the other day. I was playing it for ages and had a lot of fun with it. Then I thought, you know what? I'll try one of the newer pokemon games. So I pulled out Pokemon White and was immediately greeted with seven hours of poorly written dialogue about cunts I don't care about. But hey, this is a pokemon game, the writing was never going to win any awards, right?

It was now time to choose my first three pokemon.

A green duck, a retarded rabbit and a panda/teletubby hybrid. Wow. What wonderful imaginations you have. I persevered because hey, they might get better right? Well it was around the time when I found a reskinned eevie that I dropped that hope.

I should probably mention the battle system now right? It's basically the same as ever, except the interface was designed by a stoned toddler. It's just not fun to navigate, and it lead to me actively being bored during battles.

So I wasn't exactly enamoured with it. Can someone tell me if White 2 is any better? I mean I'd be ok if they just fixed the fight menu.

Blake, I never liked Pokemon anyway because of..... well I think it is a crap game, but that is me.

Eh, they're surprisingly deep and addictive. I played red for nostalgia, I was pokemon obsessed when I was a kid.

I just never really could get into because the characters are so annoying. There has to be something though, because they sell.

So you chose the rabbit and named it Effrum, right?

... Family Guy references: how I know I've reached a low point.

Yep. That is a low point :p

White 2 is much better. The starters are the same (though honestly Oshawott has good evolutions and Snivy starts and stays cool looking). But the game throws the Pokemon you want to put on your team. Before you get to the second Gym you can get a Growlithe, Magby/Elekid (depending on your version), Magnemite, Riolu, or Koffing, all of which are awesome. It's also the best balanced Pokemon I've seen challenge wise, I recommend most to skip B/W in favor of 2.

The game is also much better if you use the touch screen. Personally I think Heartgold/Soulsilver has the best interface in the series though.

Yeah. I got a ds and gamecube emulator (piracy I know) so it's not an ideal input method. Also, what are your thoughts on XD?

Play it until you reach Mirror B and hear his music. Or just look it up on YouTube. The game is kind of bland but Mirror B is one of the greatest villains ever made. What a waste to put him in a game that mediocre

Mirror B is awesome. But yeah, if you could catch more than Shadow pokemon (I know you can, but barely) the game would be lamazing. As it stands... the battles are nice. That's all.

It's a shame because there's a great RPG somewhere in there. Emphasis on double battles is a cool idea, shadow Pokemon are both great from a story and gameplay perspective, the game starts you off with an Eevee, and Mirror B is such a great villain who I'd love to be the main bad guy. I would love for Nintendo to make a Wii U follow up that rights all of its wrongs.

Well firstly, that's a lizard, a pig and an otter lol bud. Which did you choose btw? And what did you think was the re-skinned eevee?

As i've only played Black, I can't comment as to whether B/W 2 is better, but from Greenman's comment it sounds way better. I got that bored with Black that I didn't even bother with the elite four for over a year. Heartgold/Soulsilver sound good, but I haven't actually gotten myself a copy of them yet >.<

Although I think part of my issue with it is that I wasn't able to use any of the Wi-Fi features, so that cut out a decent part of the game, including all the Dream World stuff.

I chose the duck. And it is a fucking duck. I know it evolves into like an awesome dragon thing, but it's a fucking duck. I thought the lillipup looked a lot like eevie, but relooking at it I don't know why I thought that lol.

And yeah fair enough. Are you happy your bf is finally playing pokemon?

It's not a duck!! *rages*

I have no idea why you would've thought that either lol. Because it's canine? Lol, stop over-reacting to stuff bud. And I actually like lillipup too .-.

You need to buy a cheap DS and second-hand b/w or b/w 2 so we can battle! >:3

And yeah, of course I am ^-^ this'll be like when I eventually start playing mass effect lol. Which I should actually do now as I finally finished both Fringe and Torchwood...

And download Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, please?

3DS would be better... and yeah lol.

I picked up Pokemon LeafGreen about a year ago because I was having some Pokemon nostalgia. I only played it for like 20 minutes, but I'm sure I could get sucked back into it if I gave it more time. This blog pretty much sums it up why I will never touch any of the newer ones.

Fair enough. Also, idk why, but I just like the black and white feel of the original red. It's just charming for some reason... I can play red for hours, but fire red just doesn't interest me as much. I think nostalgia has a lot to do with it.

I think if you wanted to start with the new gen of Pokemon, Diamond/Pearl or Platinum would have been better choices, and then go to Black/White. Or alternatively, go to HeartGold/SoulSilver after D/P and P, since it covers the second gen (Gold/Silver and Crystal) and the first gen (aka: Red/Blue). Then again, i'm also catching up on the Pokemon games and i'm only so far on Diamond, so better go to Greenman and/or Captain N for anything Pokemon or check the almigthy Bulbapedia.

As far starters, I don't mind the B/W starters, but in design, I liked better the ones of Gen 1, Gen 3 and Gen 4.

Yeah. Platinum is pretty awesome. One and 3 are my favourite gens. Haven't really looked too much into the others.

I skipped b/w, and strangely enough, the day when I felt like I had enough pokenostalgia to get up and go buy a game, that was the day that b2/w2 came out. I actually had no idea that it came out so I went to the counter with normal black, but they told me b2 was out and I got that lol.

I picked the "retarded bunny" lol in your words and with some training I turned him into a fat, red killing machine.

I think most of the fun of Pokemon is knowing and realizing that the Pokemon are actually yours, and you sort of grow attached to them. That sort of attachment really doesn't come with an emulator, and I would say the best way to play pokemon is legit

Idk. I don't really feel that bond even on a handheld. I prefer to game on a pc when I can anyway, just because it's convenient for me and I don't need to buy other shit. Thinking of buying a 3ds though.

This is the only Pokemon game that I put a serious amount of time into.  I guess that I do not understand pokemon very well because I ended up quitting the game with one high level duck and a handful of Pokemon at a much lower level.  I loved the fact that there was an actual garbage Pokemon in this one.

Fair enough. Idk... I think the pokemon and the battle system were what most deterred me. I freakin loved the art style for the backgrounds though!

Probably my favourtie part about Pokemon White had nothing to do with the game....

I just love this comic.
