Keiji Inafune announces Not Mega Man

A while back Capcom put the lid on Mega Man by cancelling the much anticipated Mega Man Legends 3 and got tight lipped about any more future Mega Man titles. They threw us a bone and dropped Mega Man in the next Smash Bros., but what about something for those fans thirsting for anything new from the blue bomber?
Keiji Inafune is the creator of the original Mega Man, he left Capcom around the time these Mega-woes began. Dividing the creator and the publisher of the beloved hero divided seems like the end of Mega Man as we know him, Capcom could create a new Mega Man game, but without Inafune behind it, would it not live up to fans expectations?
Well Inafune along with some of his former team mates, just announced he is crowd sourcing a new game independently. This new game, currently called “Mighty No. 9”, features a little robot that runs, jumps, and shoots through 2D levels played in any order with a boss at the end of each one. “No. 9” then gains the abilities off the bosses after he defeats them. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Yes, it does, but whatever you do don’t call it Mega Man.
The Kickstarter goal was set at $900,000, as of this writing it met that goal with 28 days to spare. Incredible. I haven’t yet heard how Capcom is reacting to all this, it’s a blatant rip-off of Mega Man, No. 9 looks like Mega Man, and titles even resemble the Mega Man logo, would Capcom sue to block the release of the game considering its close resemblance to their property? It would be pretty ignorant if they did considering their own blatant rip-off of Twisted Pixels ‘Splosion Man with their mobile game MaXplosion a few years back.
Personally I’m excited about this game. I wasn’t a fan of the Zero games or Battle Network. Mega Man 9 was a cute idea, but they rode it out with Mega Man 10 and I haven’t been impressed with anything Mega Man since. I hear No. 9 will be able to transform and use magnetic hands. Sounds like Inafune is exploring new ways a little robot dude can power-up.
