Now I Remember Why I Don't Like Ebay!

A little over a month ago, the joystick on my PSP broke. Luckily, this doesn’t make the thing a shiny paperweight as many of its games and all its other features can be used without the joystick. However, it would still make a lot of my games basically paperweights. The sad day came when I decided to replace my old PSP. It was a fine soldier for the five years it served me. It was smashed on pavement at least twice, fell into a puddle of grease and damaged to the point that it was basically split open. Yet, it still for the most part played games just as well as a new machine!

Anyway, it seems I made the mistake of ordering a used PSP via Ebay. I was already aware that most hardware sold on Ebay is faulty, not as described, or just plain not working but it’s not like I’ll have the bad luck of getting one of those, right? I guess it should have come as no surprise that when I got the PSP in the mail it worked fine until I tested the joystick. Yep, now I’ve got two PSPs without a working joystick!

What makes this item even fishier is that instead of coming with the 2 GB memory card it listed, it was a measly 32 MB. In terms of PSP storage size, that is about as useful as a floppy disk on a PC!

I also received a mysterious second package by the same person. What I found inside was a copy of Ocarina of Time for N64. I can only assume this was intended to be compensation for not receiving the exact product that I ordered. Hey, Ocarina is an amazing game but I don’t even own an N64. Guess I could always add another paperweight to the pile! But yeah, I’m going to file a claim with Ebay and hopefully get my money back.

Haha, end rant! Hopefully everyone else had happier times buying games in the last few weeks. FFXIV should come in the mail any day now; at least I dodged the bullet of those crowded servers!

Hmm, looks like a good site. But shipping to the states will be too expensive for me and I can only imagine it would take well over a month to finish.

i've had both good and bad experiences on ebay.  you have to be careful.  I buy a lot of vintage audio equipment on there, and so far I have been pretty lucky.

Yep, I think I'm going to stay away from hardware from now on if I decide to continue to use ebay. My experience ordering games has been fine for the most part.

Yea thats crap I would be pissed and would definitely hold Ebay responsible and the seller should be banned from selling anything else sorry that happened but your nicer then I would have been lol!!!

I tend to only get mad while I play games, haha! That said, yeah, I have every right to be mad in this case.

32 mb lol? What can you hold with that, like two games's save files?

Halochief90

Yeah, pretty much. And I think you can only use like half of that 32MB for memory! My 1GB card has lasted me this whole time, but only barely.

I've had good experiences the few times I've used ebay but it's been years since I bought anything on there. You should threaten the seller with a really bad review if he doesn't right it right. A lot of those professional sellers will do anything to avoid bad reviews. It could also get their right to sell revoked, I think, so you definitely have some options to pursue.

I have seen a few sellers that are pretty desperate for positive feedback, This one only has like 80 feedback so it's not a professional seller. I doubt he'll get me another PSP himself and I'm certainly not paying to ship it back. I'll see what ebay says first.

I used to like ebay but for gaming, I dont' care for it anymore. I can get a lot of new games for the prices on ebay and if they are really old than often times the prices are inflated. As for sellers on ebay, obviously you pick your poison. I haven't had any problems with sellers.

Amazon does pretty well for me. A few of their third party sellers have been sketchy, but I've always gotten it sorted out in the end.

I've only used Ebay once, and I ended up having my friend Michael deal with it for me. It was a satisfactory transaction, but it was a set of dishes and not something like a PSP or games. I doubt I'd take my chances with those things.

I've actually had a few friends request me to order something from ebay and I always deny. I've never liked using the site and I certainly don't want to have to deal with a hassle like this on someone else's dime.

Having recently enjoyed the psp gifted to me I totally feel your pain,Kev. Before I had my psp my stance was "Handhelds are kinda cool....I guess.". Now I'm more like "Good luck prying my cold dead fingers off my psp!".

Do you know of any game shops that specialize in repairing systems? They're not common but they do exist.

Also, you might find a good deal for a psp (in tip top shape) on amazon!

PS: Sorry I referred to you as "Tami",Kevin. lol. Pixlbit sometimes mixes me up because it will show a person's last response on a blog that's not necessarily their own. Still,no excuse for me. lol.

I've had a GBC and a GBA, but I only bought a few games for them. PSP though has been my pal over the years. I find this thing way more useful and fun than other devices like the iPhone.

I could look around for a game repairing shop. I would have never trusted my old PSP to be fixed out of fear it would cause further damage. But I have two now, so it's worth a shot!

And lol on the mistaken name! It's totally understandable as she does have the post above you!

I stopped using ebay years ago when they practically Forced me to use Paypal. Now I if I have to use anything I guess its amazon...but I found on facebook a county wide buy sell and trade which is local and you actually exchange everything in person. so far it works great.  At least for my daughter who has sold a ton of stuff and I go with her for the exchange.

I don't have much problem with them needing Paypal. I pretty much only trust Amazon with my credit card.

I do feel things like this would be more of a non-issue if I lived in the States as there a much wider variety of options over there.

I haven't had any bad product from ebay as of yet, but I have a friend of mine do it for me. He knows how to pick reliable sellers, I guess. I'm not really sure what his bit of magic is with it.

Halochief90

Well, almost all of my ebay purchases have went smoothly. This guy did have a good feedback score as well.  I guess hardware was one area where a bad product was bound to pop up.

It seems like ebay has a pretty good feedback and money-back system if you get hosed.

I have had pretty much 98% good luck with eBay.  I always buy from people with lots of good ratings.  The few times I have been screwed, eBay has always fixed it.  The most I have ever been out is a few bucks for return shipping.  You should definately contact the seller.  If they won't work it out, eBay should.

Halochief90

Yeah, I've already contacted the seller and am waiting on a reply. Not really worried, I know lots of people who get refunds when these things don't work out.

Yeah, I don't buy systems off Ebay unless I really have to.  I'll buy old consoles (SAT, GEN, T-16) and any Nintendo system (Nintendo's stuff are built better to last), but I won't buy anything used from MS or Sony. Laughing

If I had a pawn shop with gaming systems nearby I definitely would have went there first, even if it meant spending a few extra bucks. At least I could try and see if it works there. And yeah, I can only imagine the ratio of working to not working 360's on ebay!

jgusw

The problem with pawn shops is that they think they have rare gold when it comes to videogames.  I see consoles & games not only old as hell, but also common and they want close to retail price for them.  Play-N-Trade and GameStop are more reasonable. Laughing

Halochief90

This is true. The chances is of finding a variety of consoles in a pawn shop is probably unlikely too. Yeah, a gaming shop would probably be the best bet.
