A Breakdown of Episode 7

Welcome back everybody for another RWBY Tuesday blog. Things are starting to pick up for Ruby and crew in the coming episodes, more so since the next episode is to be the mid-season episode. But for now we’ll just focus on the episode for this blog. Here’s the latest YouTube embed video of Episode 7: The Emerald Forest, pt.2!

Goodwitch and Ozpin are seeing observing the student’s progress with their tablet devices. Goodwitch comments on how Nora and Lie are the final partnering and she feels bad for Lie given Nora’s nature. She also comments that despite Lie’s partnering it couldn’t be worse than Pyrrah’s partner. Goodwitch also voices her concern about Jaune despite what his transcripts say. Though she mentions these issues to Ozpin, he pays her little attention and instead focuses intently on his tablet device showing how Ruby and Weiss are doing.

Ruby and Weiss end up getting lost in the forest and once again argue amongst themselves. Ruby hates her attitude and Weiss hates the fact that Ruby acts like a child. Though their yelling match comes to an end they still don’t reconcile nor learn more about each other, putting their partnership into question.

Meanwhile Yang and Blake find their way to the forest temple and find various chess pieces there. Yang notices that some of them are missing and figures that others have already arrived. Blake suggests they probably should pick one.

We then go to Pyrrah and Jaune who happen to find a cave with caveman drawings near the entrance that suggests something is in there (a giant scorpion is shown). Jaune for some odd reason wonders if this is the shrine. They go in as Pyrrah voices her concerns that perhaps the cave is not the shrine. Jaune voices his assurances just as he trips and drops their torch, plunging them into darkness.

We cut back to Yang and Blake choosing their “pony” relic with Yang stating that finding the shrine wasn’t that hard. Blake agrees.

Meanwhile Jaune and Pyrrah stumble upon a glowing “thing” in the cave which causes Jaune to proclaim that the “thing” is the relic. Jaune is able to grab ahold of the “thing” when Pyrrah voices her concern as the “thing” reveals to be the stinger of the said giant scorpion shown in the cave drawings. Jaune screams like a little girl.

Yang and Blake hear Jaune’s scream and Yang assumes some girl out there is in trouble. She asks if Blake heard the scream but we see Blake preoccupied with something in the sky.

Pyrrah is seen running out of the cave with the giant scorpion hot on her heels. Jaune is still hanging from the monster’s stinger, begging for Pyrrah to do something. She tells him to don’t let go where upon Jaune is immediately flung thru the air as the scorpion throws him off its stinger. Realizing she’s all alone with the monster Pyrrah makes tracks.

The episode ends with Blake still starring dumbfounded at the sky as Yang asks her what should they do, just as Ruby’s voice is heard screaming “head’s up!” as she falls from the sky toward them. Roll credits with Lie and Nora backdrop.

High Points

The plot thickens

We get to see what Goodwitch and Ozpin think about the current events taking place in the emerald forest. Most Goodwitch voices her concern for certain students and Ozpin continues to observe Ruby with the intensity he had when he first met her back in the first episode.

More partner interactions

We get to see how the formal partnerships continue to build between Ruby and Weiss, Jaune and Pyrrah along with Yang and Blake. So far it still looks rocky between Ruby and Weiss, going as far as Ruby proclaiming that she hates Weiss. Yang and Blake seem to get along okay despite them being polar opposites as chipper and stoic. Jaune and Pyrrah seem to get along fine after the events of the last episode, even going as far as almost trusting Jaune in walking them into danger. Team RWBY shows promise even if things look rocky between them. I wonder if they’ll be forced with a clear and present danger that’ll help unite them to a common cause of survival….

Low Points

This is a part 2

As mentioned this is a two part episode so it does hold the same weaknesses as other 2 parter episodes. I’m sure this is something that won’t be noticeable when the whole series is watch back to back so one can’t fault Rooster Teeth for this oversight. It’s just a shame that there wasn’t a way to make the episodic parts flow better when it comes to two part episode splits. It’s nothing that ruins the show altogether but it doesn’t help keep a viewer’s interest long enough for next week. Unless a decent cliffhanger is used that is. Speaking of which…

Confusing Cliffhanger

I already mentioned this before back in episode 5, cliffhangers can be good if done right. Sadly this is the second worst way to make a cliffhanger. Again probably not an issue when the series is watched back to back but it doesn’t help matters when this cliffhanger is done confusingly. The last one gave us an impression that Weiss was in peril though we all knew she’d get out of it being she’s a member of Team RWBY. Here we not only seeing Ruby flying thru the air when we know nothing bad will happen to her, but we don’t even know WHY she’s flying in the air. Nothing was shown between Ruby and Weiss to explain why Ruby would be falling from the sky toward Yang and Blake.  It’s a great way to get the viewer hooked but at the same time it leaves more questions than it does answers. And speaking of which…

Question, question, question.

Why was Ruby falling from the sky toward Yang and Blake? What events did we miss to see why Ruby was in this predicament?

Why is Ozpin so interested in Ruby? Why does he focus so much on her progress? So far Ozpin has not shared with anyone (let alone the viewer) as to why Ruby is important? So far we haven’t been shown why yet.

Where did Jaune go? Did he get flung all the way to the other side of the forest? Perhaps that’s how Ruby was flung in the air. She too met a giant scorpion?

Once again this episode many not exactly hold much water given it’s a two parter. But at least you’ll be able to immediately watch episode eight to see what happens next. If you haven’t watched it yet WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR IT IS SO AWESOME I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU HAVEN’T WATCH IT YET GO DO IT RIGHT NOW!!!

Ahem….

Sorry about that moment of craziness. Given that episode eight is the mid-season episode; it’s longer and has more going for it. So check it out when you can. You won’t be disappointed. Like before if you need to catch up you can always check out Rooster Teeth’s website or Crunchyroll for a complete episode listing. Till next time I think I’m going to re-watch episode eight again. Really it’s that good.

Any thoughts about this episode? Agree? Disagree? Undecided? Let me know in the comments!

Yeah, this one had the typical frustrations of a "Part 2" but at least stuff is happening. I was getting caught up last week, so I watched episode 8 right after this one. Love that mid-season length!

it is quite frustrating but it does have more happening unlike previous part 2's. Oh episode 8 will get it's turn!

Yeah, this one kinda felt a bit rushed, confusing cliffhanger and all. I did liked the characters interactions and the beggining with Ozpin though.

I hope they do better cliffhangers in the future. It's good to see more on Ozpin and Goodwitch. I feel the character interactions of Team RWBY and Team Phantasy Star will get better in the future.
