What I'm Playing

Hi guys, I'm Blake Turner, welcome to Jackass- Wait... It's 2013 and that joke is no longer relevant? Fuck it, let's discuss some games then!

The Cat Lady

Hey guys, want to play one hell of a fucked up and emotionally charged game? Grab this. It's 2 bucks on GoG atm, and it's worth it. It's an adventure game in the truest sense, but even if you don't like that genre, I encourage you to play this game. This game deals with depression in a sort of realistic way. Well, the character acts like someone who is depressed. Nothing else in this game is realistic, and if it is... well fuck, maybe someone should nuke this planet.

You play a woman named Susan who commits suicide in the first 2 minutes of the game. She's got nothing to live for, no friends except for her cats, she's between jobs and her boyfriend broke up with her. So she decides to take like 34 sleeping pills. When she does, she goes to limbo, meets this old lady who tells blackmails her into going back to earth and killing a bunch of serial killers, in an attemtpt to give her something to cling to. So bam, you're back on earth, you're immortal, and you're charged with killing some of the most fucked up killers to grace gaming ever. Seriously, these guys are disturbing, the imagery is disturbing, the game is relentlessly depressing, and yet hopeful... I get the feeling that this is a redemption tale more than a "kill yourself you angsty cunt" style tale ala Silent Hill 2.

Anyway, you do it while listening to a fucking kickass soundtrack by a band called Warmer. Seriously, it's awesome and suits the game perfectly. I mean I stopped playing the game several times to listen to the music. Hell, I'm listening to the soundtrack as I'm typing it. Have a song to sell you.

Persona 4

I was a persona virgin before I played this game, and I'm starting to wonder what was wrong with me. This game is friggin amazing! After the hyper-linear intro that I actually didn't mind because it was paced so well, the game goes from decent to amazing when the social elements kick in. The combat is great too! Nanako is adorable, and I want to adopt her as my sister.

I just defeated Shadow Kanji, and while that was kinda hilarious, it is a little homophobic. Being gay is just a personality flaw like greed or vanity? Nice one Japan.

Sir You are Being Hunter (Alpha)

I got the alpha for this the other day, and I don't regret it. It's a randomly generated open world game that plays like a mix of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Slender, and you are being hunted by british robots in a victorian style rural england. YOu have to find parts for a machine that will get you home. You start with no weapon, so you have to be sneaky until you find one. You also have to find food and stuff. It's fun, and it's tense.

So that's what I've been playing. Simple.

Oh my God...  The Cat Lady sounds awesome!!!  Sir, You are being Hunted has been on a list of games that I would like to play for quite some time, same with Persona 4.  I should probably just get copies of all of them.

I'm going to make a video of Sir You Are Being Hunted soon. And yeah, the cat lady is awesome, but as I said, it is an adventure game. I usually hate them, but the story and atmosphere just keep you going.

I wouldn't say being gay is a flaw of Kanji, it's something he kept bottled up. That's what a shadow really is, a part of you you're ashamed of and being ashamed over being gay is a very real thing, especially amongst teens. The next big boss you fight is not a flaw either, it's a realization about something which creates a shadow. As you go on you find out that it's not even that Kanji is gay that is his true problem, it's his anti-social tendencies, especially with women, that made him wonder if he really was gay.

It's his fear of rejection from anyone, I know. It just seemed like that was the message. I mean it's not like the game came out today, so I'll forgive it lol.

Cat Lady kind of reminds me of a 1990s point-and-click game from Empire Interactive, Dreamweb. You were tasked by the keepers of the Dreamweb to kill seven people who would be responsible for a nuclear war, but the way the documentation and the background story was written, it was ambiguous as to whether you were saving the world or were just a serial killer driven by paranoid delusions. The game ends with you walking into a police ambush and being gunned down.

Dreamweb also had an excellent soundtrack from Matt Seldon.

Damn right she is. And tragic... poor Nanako.

Though not the fourth game, I have Persona 3. Haven't played much, but I liked what I played of it and the characters are very charismatic.

I haven't played 3, but I shall get around to it!
