Mercenaries was the only GTA clone that I actually spent a decent amount of time. I never got into those types of games otherwise. GTA Chinatown Wars is the only one that I actually finished.
I Do Love Me Some GTA Clones

Hey Pixlbit! Happy Monday! So I hear there’s some big game being released tomorrow and I know most of you guys/gals are gonna be sucked in, including yours truly, so before we into that game (Grand Something or Other) here are some sandbox games I enjoyed on the PS2
This is my friendly reminder from GameStop. Yeah the preorder I’ve had for about a year now (that 5 bucks would have earned a quarter if I kept it in the bank). Oh GameStop really wants me to pay it off, but since Toys R Us is having some kind of deal where I get a Rockstar game, and a Giftcard I might go there…but most likely I’ll go to GameStop because I got that keychain, poster, and some other stuff
I guess there should be some loyalty considering one of their better employees made sure we had first crack at the stuff.
So I went digging through a couple of bins that look that this that is home to my PS2 games. I found the sandbox games I enjoyed. There are some games that I have missed that I played liked the Simpsons Hit & Run, Scarface, True Crime, and that one game where you are in Mexico (the name escapes me). Anyways before I begin
The games I spent a bunch of time playing (I haven’t beaten III, I lost interest)
The Godfather
This was a game I was really excited for because it combined my love for the Corleone Storyline, and a GTA like gameplay. Even if it was a “new” storyline, it borrowed heavily from the first Godfather.
Loved: The size of the map, The last level
Hated: It was a little slow, It was generic, Voice Acting was funky
Random: I never watched the bonus disc. This was the first game I preordered because it was a Limited Edition.
Marc Ecko’s Getting Up
You are a graffiti artist who goes around this city and you voice your displeasure with the government by tagging. Let’s face it, it wasn’t very good
Loved: There were a bunch of famous graffiti artists (I didn’t know who they were until my brother told me), different take on the genre
Hated: The game as a whole isn’t good. I guess if you like Ecko and graffiti you should try it
Random: Only reason why I bought it was because it was $8 for the Limited Edition tin box that came with a black book (to sketch out your work), silver game stamped Sharpie, and a CD of the soundtrack, which isn’t bad.
Gun
The game I called GTA with Horses. I loved this game because it was a western, you fought bears, Indians, Bad Guys, and you blow stuff up. This is actually a fun game, and you haven’t tried it, go find a copy.
Loved: Overall gameplay, story, riding around on horses, bounty hunting, and you can ride a horse until it died of exhaustion.
Hated: Only three towns in the game, and they are separated by a ton of space (sucked when your horse died of exhaustion). Once the main story was finished, the entire game became a ghost town
Random: The developers had the option of scalping people. They took it out of the game, yet you can still do the animation, which is odd.
Driver Parallel Lines
This game opens up the Driver franchise without going too GTA Clone like Driv3r. The game is interesting because it’s set in the 70s, and then in the 90s. Big open map, with a lot of cars, and a lot of spots to be purchased.
Loved: The map, gameplay
Hated: I really can’t think of any
Random: I loved the original Driver on the Playstation, and really didn’t give this game a try until I found it at Toys R Us for super cheap. I thought this was a really good game and there should have been a new version for the PS3
Midnight Club 3
One of the open world driving games I really loved. I think I beat it on the PS2, and PSP. You played through I think 3 cities that had really great maps (you could drive through Petco Park, home of the Padres) and I thought it was really well done. The racing was fun, and customizing your cars was excellent. I believe I created the cars Brian from Fast and the Furious drove, which was my favorite. MC3 was easily my favorite out of the three Midnight Club games.
Loved: Everything. This game was really enjoyable
Hated: I can’t think of anything I really didn’t like about this game…other than there isn’t a sequel
Random: Driving through SD, I would drive around, and being all touristy, looking for spots I used to visit
LA Rush
Another racing game I thought was underrated. This game took place in LA (hello?) and the city map is MASSIVE. I wish I would have explored more than just playing part of this game, but damn there was so much to see. From what I remember from this game I really needed the map to find races. The story was kind of weak. You are a rich guy, who had all his cars stolen, so you had to go and win them back with street racing. You had a beeper, flip phone, and a good soundtrack.
Loved: The ginormous map, of LA. The soundtrack, and being able to use a flip phone
Hated: Races were so spread out
Random: I wish I had completed the story
So those are some of the games I thought I’d share, that I liked (there were parts of Getting Up I liked…parts). So when you guys/gals go nuts tomorrow, remember there are some really good games that borrowed from the GTA Sandbox.
While digging through my PS2 games, I found a couple that I haven’t seen in a while, and I’m going to play. I actually forgot I bought the first two, and as for the Guy Game, I bought it for the articles.
Before I call it a blog, I had a #FirstWorldProblem, when my Playstation Plus ended and I couldn’t play Galaga Legions. I then realized my name didn’t have the yellow Plus, so I renewed just so I can take part in the next round of Plus freebies, and play Galaga.
Well that’s all for now, more later!

Happy GTA V EVE!
