In today's blog, The Original Ser says goodbye to a special fuzzy friend.

*****

Life sure can suck. The only two things that are certain in it are, famously, Death and Taxes. The tax part? I got screwed with that today, despite being poor as hell.  But moreover, the Death part. Yeah, that happened too.

AW, EFF

This is Normandy. He was named for the stripes on his tail which resembled the stripes on allied planes at the invasion of Normandy in World War II. Take a look at this cute little boy. There's a real soul behind those intelligent little eyes of his. This tiny little mouse had such strong, almost human characteristics. He was gracious, never destroyed his toys, never bit, "talked" all the time when he was up, would give hugs to your fingers and tiny, tiiiiiiiny little kisses. Though only three inches long excluding his tail, with a weight of about 30 grams, it was unbelieveable how much love this tiny creature gave us.

I raised this little guy at the pet store I used to work at. He was literally a tiny pink blob an inch long in the beginning. He was part of a litter of five. Then four. Then two. And then the owners of the store sold his mother and his one brother as food. I took him in after that.

He had a companion mouse, a gold satin-coated angel named Gabriel who most likely imparted much of the charatceter Normandy had to him. Male mice usually kill each other. Normandy and Gabriel were the clear exception to that rule. I nursed Gabriel back from pneumonia, and in turn, he was gentle and compassionate. It's no wonder he grew so attached to Normandy when he got big enough to introduce them. Unfortunately, Gabriel died last month.

And, well, Normandy got to be with him again tonight. We found him barely alive and within minutes, he made his way over the rainbow bridge with a seemingly intent "dash" as his worldly life faded. He knew we loved him, and I know he loved us right back. And we still do as I'm sure he still does. It was pretty sudden so I'm a little bitter now, but I know he's probably in a better place since it looked as if a sudden, painful illness got him. He was doing fine yesterday, but again, life sure can suck sometimes.

Rest in peace, baby boy.

Aw, man, I'm sorry to hear about your little guys. I'm very fond of mice, I had two females about 25 years ago named Ronnie and Nancy that I had to give away due to a living situation change, and in college, I had Darrell and Darrell, who did try to do one another in until I got a second cage. I got pretty fond of the Darrells, one of whom was incredibly tame. He outlived his brother by almost a year, and during that time, I never had to put the cover on his cage, he'd just go back and forth from the aquarium to the habitrail. He liked to have his Cheerio snacks while sitting in my hand, and naps in the hood of my sweatshirt.

Normandy sounds like another great little dude like Darrell 2. Thanks for telling us about him.

Normandy and Gabriel were examples of animals that defy every expectation and rule. The result was a couple of mice that were unlike anyof the animals we've ever had, even amongst our many mice and rats.

Sorry to hear about that, I'm currently trying to help my fifteen year old black cat, Clinger, feel as little of the pain from his failing kidney function as possible before he inevitably dies or gets put down.

Can't say much, except that I'm sorry for your loss.

That's sad to hear. Hopefully, your cat is made as comfortable as possible. I'm sure he appreciates everything you do for him!

I was never really an animal person until I took my job at the pet store. I grew a heavey conscience when I had to start selling mice and rats as food for reptiles. When I learned how intelligent, loyal and personable they were, that's when I started getting them. Right now, we're sitting at four rats, two mice and three ferrets. In the future, I hope to maintain two of each. I went a little overboard, haha.

My sister bought a huge white rat (he was over a foot long from nose to the tip of his tail) in Boston and gave him to me. I really liked the big guy. Even my cat tolerated him. I was really sad when he died.

We have a giant white rate too, though she has a dark gray hood and dumbo ears. Her name is Astrid, and she measures about 18 inches from nose to tail. You want to see a friendly rat, Astrid is your example. Non-stop kisses and constant neediness; whenever we're around she drops whatever she's doing and comes to see us. That even includes eating!

Rats are really just mouse-shaped dogs. Just as affectionate, just as willing to please, able to learn thier names and tricks. It's just awesome. The only drawback: thier short lifespan... That said, I'm terribly sorry for your loss too, since I know how great those little guys truly are.

I can certainly see why you were so attached to the little guy.  Sounds like a great friend.

He was. We just couldn't believe how like us he was in terms of temperment and behaviour. He'll be missed, and will likely never me matched by any other mouse, ever. Especially the with the tiny hugs.

It's OK. I know that mice should live longer, but in the end, they're susceptable to many of the diseases we are, and we could have been carrying something that killed him, but we wouldn't have noticed. While he was with us, he was easily the most spoiled with twice the amount of toys and living space as our other mice =P
