The First Game I Ever Played...

Hey guys. This is a celebration of the first game I ever played. That game is the one, and only, SONIC THE F*@#KING HEDGEHOG!!!!

The game essentially kindled my love of gaming. My mum, my dad, my grandmother and my uncle were all obsessed with this game. They were going to beat it. We left out Mega Drive on all night some times because the game wouldn't save.

I first played it when I was 3. Now, being a 3 year old, I was kind of shit at it. But I still remember enjoying it, and playing it over the years. I still adore that game.

Anyway, in celebration of this game, I made a cover of the Green Hill Zone theme. Check it here.

For some reason this theme used to freak me out as a kid. I think it's the synths being played... they don't sound natural. It used to even make me feel sick for some reason. Now I have no problem with it. But it's weird what scares you as a kid hey?

Sonic! I never beat Sonic or Sonic 2, but I did beat 3. I think that may be the most satisfaction I've ever had finishing a game. First game I ever played was Asteroids at an arcade when I was ten or eleven.

Very nice! I've played Asteroids, but like when I was 12 or 13. What's it like as a first gaming experience?

Seeing as home consoles didn't exist at the time, it was pretty damn cool.

I love Sonic too.  I think the first game I ever played was something on the Atari... I don't know what though.  The first I remember is Defender.

I was never a fan of the original because I played 2 first. That game is easily one of my all time favorites though, one of my all time favorites. My first game was Super Mario World. I still believe it to be the greatest game ever made even if it isn't my favorite (top 3 without a doubt though).

That was the first mario game I played. Damn good title! Great start to your gaming life!

Nice cover! I also have fond memories of the original Sonic and I still enjoy today. I can't remember the first game I played. Apparently, I played games when I was 2, but I can only remember back to age 4.

Thanks man! I'm thinking of doing all of the songs from the original sonic. Already started work on the Marble Zone... dear god that track is creepy.

I thought the Sonic opening was a bit weird too.  I'd get a slight uneasy feeling when it played.  I felt it more if I played at night and I was alone.

Good! So I'm not the only one?! Wtf is it?

I don't really remember the first game that I played, but the first game that I owned was Spider-Man 2 on the Gameboy Advance. I remember that event so vividly. So when I was very little, like 4-5 years old, my parents used this kind of  "point system" where if I was nice for a day or if I did chores like clean my room and stuff I would recieve a number of "points". My dad and I kept track of my points in a notebook. Every now and then I would redeem the points for something that I would want, like ice cream for example. One day I heard of the Gameboy on the internet (yes, I used the internet at 4 years old) and I asked my parents if I could have it. They said it would cost me 500 points. So I worked my butt off for a month and eventually I had enough to buy one. My mom took me to Toys R Us to buy a game for the system that my dad was going to bring home from work in the evening. I chose one of the Rayman games, because I read that those were good and Rayman looked really cool. So I took the game home, but my dad called, not knowing that we had just bought the game, and he asked me whether I wanted to buy the Shrek game or the Spider-Man 2 game. I immediately chose Spider-Man, because at the time (and even still today to some extent) I was obsessed with Spider-Man and I wanted to be him when I grew up. my mom then asked me whether I wanted to have Rayman or Spider-Man, and without thinking, I chose Spider-Man. When my dad got home I was so excited, and I remember I was sitting on the couch when he opened the Gameboy. I popped in Spider-Man And I was immediately hooked on video games!

Sorry if I was rambling, I just had to get that story out!

Nah it's cool man! That points system your parents had going seems awesome. Good way to give a kid a work ethic without giving him actual money, so when he does get money he knows the value of it.

How was Spiderman 2 on GBA btw?

Thanks man! Good ole Pong. Jesus Christ you are old :p

Sonic baffles me. How do you control something that goes that fast?! I gotta try it again. Maybe I'll get it this time.

My first game was probably this Gran Trak 10 arcade cabinet when I was seven. A big old steering wheel and a top down view. I used to love the snake like track and how the little cars moved around it. My obsession with driving has remained to this day. That's why I am the KNIGHT DRIVER. Don't forget it.

That's pretty cool bud ^-^

I think, the first game I owned was pokemon yellow... I can't remember the first game I ever played, but it was likely something on gameboy colour, as my cousins had one and I loved getting to play on it when I visited them (oh, and seeing them too of course, but that's besides the point lol)... Thinking about it, that may have been pokemon silver. This suddenly explains a lot about my pokemon obsession lol. Fml.

As you can see, i'm a big Sonic fan, though my first experience wasn't with the original Genesis/Mega Drive games, but with Sonic Advance on the GBA. After I got Sonic Mega Collection Plus on the Xbox, I experienced the greatness of the original games. I think my favorites of the bunch were Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles (since both are more or less connected).

As for first game I had played, it was Super Mario 64. Still holds up to this day.

First game I ever played was a Pong clone in my parents bedroom when I was just a toddler. This was probably 1977-78. I remember trying it but not being able to do much with it. I got frustrated and just watched my Dad play. Pops liked gadgets and each generation that went by we got a new game system. I played plenty of Odyssey 2, Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, Intellivision, Colecovision, Apple, Commodore 64, and early 16 Bit games before I picked up the first Sonic. But when I did, I couldn't stop playing. I borrowed it off a friend and I really wanted to beat it before I returned it. That day I had one of those gaming zen moments when you can do no wrong. I breezed through the game will all the Emeralds, something I don't have the time or patience for now. Sonic was an absolutely killer game at the time, it made the Genesis/Mega Drive look like a whole new console. One touch I always loved is how the end level jingle would blend into the "cha cha ching!" sound effect at the end.

That is a mighty fine first game to have ever played, and that is one bad ass cover you did of that track! "The First Game I Ever Played" would actually make an awesome community-wide feature.

I can't quite remember what my very first gaming experience was, but it may have been Super Mario Bros 2 or TMNT on the NES. I'll have to do some mental spelunking and try to figure this out!
