A Wealth of Entertainment

GTA V has unearthed an impressive mound of criticism, both positive and negative, thoughtful and inane. It's also unearthed an issue I've had with the gaming community for quite some time. So, inGTA V's imposing and controversial shadow, here's something that has irked me for a while.

There are some people online who complain about lengthy, open-world games like this, saying things like "I put 60 hours into this game and now there's nothing to do. Worst game ever."

I'm sorryWhat?

You bought a piece of entertainment that gave you sixty — perhaps more — hours of entertainment! What other form of entertainment does that? Putting aside any complaints you might have about the gameplay, this title kept you engaged for a ridiculous amount of time. How do you have any right to complain?

Yeah I know. It's kind of retarded though. I mean complain about a legitimate problem with the game, sure, but if the game kept you playing for x amount of hours you can't call it a bad game.

"How do you have any right to complain?"

Entitled, and greedy morons. That's who.

Exactly what every GTA has done. It's all in their plan, man.

Pretty much.

Fuck GTA V! I rather wash my balls with alcohol and razor blades then play that PoS game.

Seriously? What is your problem with the game?

Oh, I just never liked any of the GTA games. I thought they were corny/stupid gangta games for peple that wished they were gangsta's. I played one and got bored real quick. That is just me though. Some people enjoy the game.

Have you played GTA 5 though? It is quite a bit different, and a lot of fun for an open world title. I HATED Gta IV, so you never know. Maybe wait till it's cheap and then try it maybe? If it's shit just take it back.

I just can not do it. I am sure you and others enjoy it but I think all of them are lame as hell.

Which ones have you played?

They're not just "gangster games".  There is way more to them.  They're not good games if you don't get involved with the story.  They story in all the games are good.  The problem is that many people, mostly children, tend to only play to do the stupid stuff (driving around, shooting people, causing chaos, etc).  As much as I enjoy the games, I can't sit and watch someone doing the stupid stuff.  It's boring.  Even doing it myself gets old fast.  The story is what really makes the games special.  Cool

I just could not get into the story or the game. I know they are really popular but I just did not like playing them.

I don't understand it either.  It's not an MMO.  It's not supposed to go on forever.  They give you the option of roaming around the world after you beat everything else because they know some people want that.  If you don't, then stop playing.  You already got a ton of entertainment value for your money.

Exactly.

Do not be mad if what I say comes out incorrectly.   Isn't this a knock on the developer?  Shouldn't they leave you feeling satisfied when you decide to put down the game?  There are plenty of games that I have spent only a couple of hours with that left me very satisfied.

Not really. I'm saying if they made a huge game with lots of things to do and you were massively addicted to the game for a long time, then that game did somethinge really right and you can't call it a bad game.

The only thing I really complained about with GTA was that I felt Rockstar dropped the ball on making sure the online portion of the game was ready to handle the demand on the first week. Everything else about the game I feel is well done. There is a vast map to explore, random side missions, and being able to play with three different characters.

There are some things I wish were included, but they are not necessary, and this is the first GTA game since San Andreas (I enjoyed the PSP games but never really played them to explore the city, and I never cared for IV) where I would play the game for 30 minutes just to drive around, and do something insane like ride a motorcycle off a mountain, or just go exploring.

Yeah, I've played GTA for 12 hours and only just gotten to Trevors missions because exploring is so much goddamn fun.

I don't think that's a valid complaint though. Mybe people who play on consoles aren't used to MMO launches, but they're never perfect. This is the most sold game EVER, so it's going to run into troubles no matter what.

We disagree but it's all good, we both can agree this game is a lot of fun.

That's a very good argument. The problem would only come if the content of the game doesn't appeal to the person that played the game, which is fine, but when a game brings you things to do and can have things that make players keep playing, even after you ended the game, that is a good thing and even if the game doesn't have anything else to offer after you had done the game, if the game actually did what it intended in that amount of content and time, that is also good.

By the way, have you played GTA V? If so, what do you think of it?

Blake Turner Staff Writer

10/11/2013 at 12:27 AM

Yeah, but if they don't like the content, why do they keep playing?

And I have played it, and I actually really like it. It's MUCH better than Saints Row IV IMO, and it's one of the best sandbox games I've ever played! This coming from someone who despised GTA IV

Some people just like to be whiny bitches, Blake. The GTA games aren't my cup of tea, but they certainly seem to pack in plenty of content and things to do. And if they got 60 hours out of the game, I do wonder what the hell it is that they feel cheated out of. Best to ignore them, makes life easier that way.

I know. I should just stay off IGN's comments full stop lol. They always make me angry.

Complaining about game-length in almost any context actually irks me. Of course, I agree 60 hours of entertainment is still more than enough to ask for. Also, the existence of 700 optional missions and online play make the comment "there's nothing to do" seem simply retarded.

But even people who complain Ico is only 4 hours long. The game is an experience and making it longer would destroy the pacing of the game. That's like saying I wish the Inception was 10 hours long. If it was, guess what, it would have sucked.

Though I cannot appreciate GTA as a series myself (Beyond San Andreas), I do marvel at the sheer size and spectacle of it all. Rockstar gives you bang for your buck!

If you liked San Andreas, you will like GTA V. I like GTA V. I hate IV. In fact IV is on my top 10 worst games of this generation.

Might go for it then! Not before Red Dead Redemption though. I still need to experience that one.
