Eulogy to an old lover: Street Fighter Alpha 3

Ah, Street Fighter Alpha 3. There was a blog of mine where I described how Final Fantasy 6 may have saved my life. By contrast, SF Alpha 3 was a bad weather friend. It never prevented me from trying stupid shit such as over-dosing on cough syrup and lithium pills or cutting on my arm with a katana soaked in jasmine oil but it DID make hell more hospitable! For all the agony I was going through, SF Alpha 3 sure was fun to play. Whether I was literally starving in college, trying to off myself using the dumbest methods available, or paying rent at a boarding house run by zealot fundamentalists, SF Alpha 3 was there for me.

If FF 6 is that reputable girlfriend everyone likes, Street Fighter Alpha 3 is more of the metaphorical bad gurl you fool around with behind the façade of social normalcy. I can remember countless hours spent drawing Cammy’s ass thong. SF Alpha 3 kind of warped my perspective on what is “decent” when it comes to concept art. Along with Dark-Stalkers 3 : Vampire Savior, capcom taught me everything about how NOT to portray a female character! (At least based on today’s hyper sensitive socio-political climate.)

But those were different times then. No one debated how Juli and Juni were being objectified by M. Bison as some sort of twisted male power fantasy. No one was creating a petition to make Cammy wear pants. Sakura wasn’t getting harassed over her school-girl costume and red panties. Rainbow Mika proudly flew her freak flag whilst using her voluptuous butt bounce attack.  It’s difficult to say exactly “why” this was. My generation did believe in equality yet it seemed like we were more subdued and quiet about it. I guess there was the golden rule “anything goes” in videogames!

Ingrid makes an appearance in Alpha 3 Max. I figured if Yuri and Alice from Shadowhearts ever got around to having a daughter,Ingrid is obiviously the end result. lol.

But SF Alpha 3 wasn’t just about the buxom beauties. It was lightning fast and seemed to focus more on offense than defense. Kicks and punches effortlessly chained together in a blur of shadow animations. Charged fireballs could hit an opponent multiple times. Challengers such as Rolento and Rose were good at setting traps and even re-directing attacks back at their opponents. Then there were the sprites. The sprites were “beautiful”.

Looking "fab",Chun!

For me, Chun Li looked her best in the Alpha games. She was buff but not so much it went into ridiculous territory akin to her 3rd Strike design. By contrast, M Bison suddenly went from being thin to totally ripped. Not to mention, I preferred how he kept his cape on while fighting this time. For me these touches made Bison a more dramatic and imposing super villain.

This is chaos,beautiful chaos!

There was a ridiculous plethora of modes. In “Dramatic battles” you could fight two opponents at once and it was also the first instance you could level up a character in “world tour mode” or have allies teaming up with you against a solo enemy. These touches may not seem revolutionary now but back in the day they were exciting inclusions when it came to 2D fighters.

Street fighter’s story telling has never been Shakespeare but I thought the Alpha series in general kicked it up a notch in the narrative department. Every character had a rival and their own custom ending. Not to mention, there were “bad endings” if you lost to Bison!

"Bison,you JERK!"

Revisiting Street Fighter Alpha 3 has been a bumpy ride. For the record, it’s AWESOME on the psp! My goodness, I cannot believe how well it holds up. I’m loving it just as much now as when I played it when I was much younger. Yet just as SF alpha 3 used to drop in on my darkest hour, it’s kind of the same now.  Most of you know about my “triumph” finally getting my rpg done. You also know how someone found a bug and I had to pretty much fix it, re upload my game, and include a save as an apology for those of you who fell prey to the dreaded “rope glitch”.  We’re talking creepy déjà vu vibes here!

On RMN (Rpgmaker network) It’s as if I’ve been caught making out with SF Alpha 3 in my closet. I will not lie. Much of my approach when it comes to illustrating female characters comes from capcom fighting games in general. If you’re not up to date on that whole drama, I’m pretty much being slammed as misogynistic and worse for some of my artwork. When people wonder why I seem like such a jerk around politically correct high horse feminist types they should look at the responses to my RMN gaming page! Need a really say more?

(Fret not. I’m not trying to get any of you involved but I do want to make my readers aware “being the nice guy” or “concerned activist” are code words used for being internet bullies sometimes. As I’ve already told James, it’s weird how I always considered myself a liberal pacifist yet here I am coming into serious conflict with other liberals. It kinda hurts and makes me wonder if any movement can truly be “sincere” and devoid of corruption. Humans are so easy to manipulate and lead astray. Why do we suck so much? Guess I‘ll be an independent from now on.)

So, SF Alpha 3 has gotten me into a bit of trouble, hasn’t she? I know I should let her down gently to ease up the heat on me and get on the right side of the tracks again. I could still be one of those respectful “white knights” if I tried diligently to clean up my act. But damn it, I love “her”. I know she may look inappropriately dressed. I know she may show off her thong a little too much. But she is a very big part of who I am!

I loved the PS1 port of this game. I still have it just in case I feel nostalgic. I never had a problem with the artwork; it fits the tone and world of the game, not to mention the franchise as a whole.

I think my problem is my art has an exaggerated "fighting game aesthetic" yet in truth I'm working on an rpg. It seems that people expect art to be less racy and less sexualized when you premote an rpg. (Uh,yeah. Miranda Lawson's skin tight body suit and Marigold from Witcher obiviously say"hello". lol.)

I think people simply like seeing someone else as "the bad guy" so they can elevate themselves. It's sad but political correctness is the new platform for moral elitism.

Regardless I agree, SF Alpha 3 is great! It's probably my favorite capcom fighter of all time.

Ben, just ignore it. Like the whole "OH MY GOD! VIDEO GAMES ARE VIOLENT!" thing, it will die down sooner or later when "they" find another cause-of-the-day crusade to embark upon. And enjoy the Street Fighter nostalgia.

It is a good game,Tami. A lot to do. Max even offered a variable mode that's sort of like KOF and Marvel vs. caocom. Aka, you can tag a partner in and out.

Believe me, I had planned to ignore these peeps but they brought the fuss to my game page directely. I guess I was simply caught unaware and surprised by their initial attacks. (Aka,I stocked up on faith in humanity again and assumed the indie game making scene might be more open minded. Welp, lesson learned! The more we know, right?)

Don't worry. It hurt a bit but not to the point I'm giving up making games or forsaking drawing ever again. Wink

I wonder if they ever will, honestly. Politicians, media, and parents' groups have been blaming video games for almost 40 years now, and show no signs of slowing down.

Andrew hit it out of the park. Even if you try to be quiet and non confrontational, these types have a tendency of still getting up in your personal space.

"When the heroes have no more villains to fight they tend to vilify other heroes."

To me that phrase embodies what's going on right now. Not saying I'm a hero, I'm just using corny comic-book lingo. lol.

I love the art of Street Fighter and Darkstalkers. It draws me in even though I don't go for 1v1 fighting games much. It's like comic book art: the women are busty and and men are brawny. It's hyper exaggerated, hyper intense, it's hyper exciting!

I find myself singing the God Hand theme song again thinking about all this. I think I'll go punch something God Hand style.

Or you could bend a villain over your knee and super spank them! I thought it was funny that was one of the attacks in God-hand. lol. It was a deep brawler that got more flak from mainstream reviewers than it deserved.

Once I figured out how to do that move, I used it as often as possible. It never got old.

It's strange how the common liberals aren't liberal anymore.  They're just as (or more) closed minded as the people they attack.  What sickens me is that they believe they are right 100% no matter the evidence you show them.  They're LIBERALS!  Why aren't they LIBERAL?!  Is it that they're so busy being feed propoganda that they can't simply pick up a dictionary? Laughing

True that. Oxford and Wikipedia are different entities,James. lol. I think people simply want to feel superior when compared to other people. It's almost just like racism only this time it's not so much about color as it is about what art you like, what you draw, what you read, what songs you listen to, or what games you find to be acceptable. It's as if we're no longer judged by our actions but by what entertainment we like to consume. Sad tidings, friend. People are superficial as hell now. "Assuming & making accusations based on those assumptions" is the new Olympic sport!

SFA3 had a lot of neat characters.  Like Cammy and Dan and R. Mika.  I also like Juni and Juli, but I always like to imagine them as M. Bison's silly and bumbling sidekicks, like Bebop and Rocksteady.  I know they REALLY weren't like that, but I like my way better. :)  I wouldn't mind having sidekicks like Juni and Juli around if I were a bad guy.  But then, I probalby wouldn't be a very good bad guy.

Thanks for reading my blog.

I wouldn't be a good super villain either,Cary. lol. I might be a bit like The Monarch from Venture Bros. or The Ice King from Adventure Time and that would be at my best. lol.

Juli and Juni were interesting. I think the only reason they didn't make it into SF4 was because people probably felt like they were too much like Cammy to stand out. Then again, there are a lot of shoto clones that follow Ryu's style. In other words, they might be in SF5. Who knows?

I feel as if I missed out on a lot of Street Fighter moments. I honestly haven't played any of the installments since SF2: Turbo; but this may be from my lack of love for fighting games though...

Fighting games are tough to love sometimes Chris. Especially since after you buy an earlier version suddenly you see the happy super fun-time turbo edition of the exact same game with more stuff at a cheaper price. Capcom is notoriously bad at that practice. I love capcom games but it's hard to agree with their business tactics. I mean c'mon, how many versions of SF 4 are there? It's ridiculous!

Never knew SFA3Max could lead to so much trouble. And here I was getting in trouble for liking Ingrid in this game. In some street fighter circles she's seen as an un-character.

I still love her just the same! I shall share in your hidden love. Wait that didn't come out right...
