Those gunships didn't fare too well in the World War Z film I'm afraid. But really, that should be a good place to be in a zombie apocalypse.

If you've played the Modern Warfare CoDs, then you probably remember the gunship missions. You fire a big gun from a helicopter to support your comrades on the ground. Zombie Gunship is basically those levels on a smaller scale...with zombies! It's basic but fun. You circle around the map helping civilians get to some sort of bunker as zombies continually pour onto the map, heading for the bunker too. If you kill three civilians or a zombie gets to the bunker, the level is over. A summary screen shows how many zombies and people you killed and how much money you earned. Money can be spent to upgrade your guns or buy special one-use items, like a bomb that goes off if any zombies get to the bunker, thus buying some time for you to clean up the mess.
Civilians are white, zombies (which don't give off a heat signature) are black
It's the guns that keep Zombie Gunship from being too repetitive. You start with just a 25mm Gatling gun, which is basically a big machine gun. You can also buy a 40mm Bofors gun and 105mm Howitzer, which just have bigger bullets and so make bigger impacts and kill more zombies at once, though they have smaller magazines and take longer to reload (the Gatling never needs to reload but can overheat). And the bigger the gun, the farther out the camera zooms. The strategy is knowing what gun to use when.
There are three maps, all similar but offering enough differentiation to keep things interesting. Various objectives—save X number of humans who are being attacked by zombies, fire X number of rounds from the Howitzer in one round, earn a set amount of money, etc.—also help give purpose to the repetition. Completing objectives increases your rank, which nets you more money from killing zombies. (You can also pay to bypass objectives but what's the fun in that?) If you save enough humans (75, I think), the air raid siren will go off during your next mission. The civilians hide when the siren is blaring, which leaves you free to massacre the zombies without worrying about killing any people. Those are my favorite missions.
Zombie Gunship is a fairly simple concept but it's executed well. It's not the kind of game that will hold your attention for hours but is a lot of fun in short bursts. If you don't want zombies in your face but you do have a hankering to help humanity, the gunship might be the best place for you.
