Batman Should Have Never Gone Open World

If I'm being honest, I don't like Batman: Arkham Origins. If I'm being blunt, I'd call it a piece of uninspired elephant shit. Firstly: DO NOT GET THIS GAME ON PC! I have a decent pc and I was getting 40 fps in some areas, whilst getting as low as 1 fps is others. That's an unplayable fucking slide show, and that was on the lowest settings. Holy shit is this game poorly optimised. Not only that, but I hear our poor console brethren are experiencing frame drops and other technical issues as well. So... the new guys done fucked up the technical side. It can be patched out, so who cares right?

My problem with the game is how tired it is. It reuses entire areas from Arkham City, which makes sense right? You know what else would make sense? IF YOU ACTUALLY FUCKING CHANGED SOMETHING SO THE PLACE DIDN'T STILL LOOK LIKE AN ASYLUM! Also, this game is set in the past, right? So why does this place still look like a decaying piece of shit?

Apart from that though, the game just feels bland. Walk here, punch someone. Walk over there, punch someone. Occasionally there's some stealth, but for the most part your just fucking punching people. The story is alright, I guess, but my problem is that, again, this feels like an excuse to cram every hero in the game so they can say "See, we know stuff about batman!" There's no personality, and there barely seems to be any cohesion to the narrative.

But wait... I had some of these problems with Arkham City as well. It was a fuckton better than this piece of cock puss, but it was also unfocused, lacked pacing, and was just in general a meh experience.

I started playing Arkham Asylum again, and I must say it is 1 million times the game city and origins is because it has pacing. It has atmosphere. It has personality, and it's plot moves forward at a nice pace. The single location is varied enough and big enough so that you don't get bored, but not so big that you're getting sick of travelling. I also think the best thing about the original though is its Metroidvania nature. It uses this formula much better than City, and it makes the game come together a lot more.

Overall, I think the Arkham games fucked up by going open world. They sacrificed a lot of what made Asylum awesome in order to go bigger, because heavens forbid we make a game that doesn't have a world the size of an african pornstars cock.

I didn't know it was open world.  I enjoyed the first two games and I was done.  I don't have much interest in this game, so I'm a bit clueless on it.  I guess I'm not missing much.

I didn't even really like City too much tbh. Asylum was and still is amazing. City doesn't live up to it imo, and origins comes nowhere near.

Yeah, the first game is the best.  Everything is better in that game.  The 2nd game is a little more than bonus content for the 1st game. Laughing

You know, I agree. I've tried playing Arkham City at least 3 times at this point and I just can't get into that game. Arkham Asylum was very tightly constructed and it felt akin to a Metroid Prime game (albeit with some different mechanics). I really enjoyed that type of design over City's sprawling design. The migration to open world really laid bare all of the problems I had with Asylum and amplified them.

Yeah. I always felt this was the non-nintendo metroid in the same way as Darksiders was the non-nintendo Zelda. Glad someone agrees.

I have to completely disagree.  I loved Arkham City much more than Asylum because it was open world.  But that's just me.  To say though that it should'nt have gone open world though is like saying COD shouldn't have gone multiplayer.  Open world is the future of batman, even if the new one sucks.  I might still play it though.  Sounds like a piece of crap though, thanks for the warning about PC version too.

How is it like saying cod shouldn't have gone multiplayer? It's more like saying Jar Jar Binks shouldn't be a star wars character.

You're entitled to your own opinion though, and I think if you liked Arkham City, you'll like origins. However, it doesn't add anything new, and feels lifeless in comparison to City. I finished City when it first came out, and I liked it. I just didn't love it. I used to think that's just because I wasn't as surprised, but going back to Arkham Asylum today after beating City again, I must say Asylum is by far the superior title.

yeah I just found Aslyum more repetitive.  I loved it when it came out, but I have no desire to replay it, where I've replayed City. I've heard that the new one is really lifeless and that's a disappointment. I've heard a lot of lame things about that game, honestly.

But as far as open world goes, I just think that's the future of batman. A truly open world batman game is the dream.  It's too bad they couldn't do it.  Asylum was cool, but how many games can you make featuring batman in enclosed spaces?  I think it was a one shot.

I might buy Blackgate though.  I've heard good things about it

I would have honestly been fine with just Asylm. And City is repetitive too. I got bored a lot quicker in City than Asylum. I just felt it mirrored the feel of metroid prime more, which I really liked.

i think we can both agree that RockSteady exiting the license freakin sucks.  Batman is the goddamned BAtman and deserves a good game, not a cash-in.

All that I can say is that Asylum was awesome.  I have not played City yet, so I cannot comment on the quality of that game.  I have bought Arkham City a handful of times, but have never actually put it into my console.  Not sure why.

City is worth playing. The ending was  truly great, and there were some great moments. Overall I feel it wasn't as good as Asylum though.

I loved Asylum enough that I even bough a few action figures from the game when I saw them in a local comic shop. I couldn't get into City for some reason? I only got to that second area where you are fighting Harley Quinn or something, and some guy calls on the phone and you have to fly around tracing the call, then I was like no, I don't want to play this anymore. So I'm not interested in Origins if it's like City.

I am more interested in MetroidVania style game on 3DS. Cool

It's on 3DS?! I thought it was only on vita... FUCK YEAH I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT NOW!!!!

I agree. The 'bigger is better' mentality is not good game design. The Asylum in the first game was a character in itself, while the city in AC was bland.  All it did was add travel time, which is a drag.

But the masses are size queens. This series will never go back to tight design.

If you're going to have an open world, at least make it interesting. The Asylum in AA was a character unto itself, whereas the city felt lifeless and bland.

I agree completely. When I played AA, my thought wasn't that I wish there was more stuff to do. It was how I was so glad they were able to put the perfect amount of secrets and collectables in with just enough hidden by puzzles to keep it interesting. Bigger just hurt the SP and took away the motivation to find everything. Have no real interest in Origins, maybe when it's patched and under $20.

Another point I just want to bring up about AC because it was so damn annoying was how unfocused the plot was. In AA it was nice and simple, Joker takes control, has a plan, other supervillains get into trouble along the way. Everything was related to Joker and there was a mystery. AC, it was Strange has a plan, but Joker infected you in something unrelated. And let's just throw Two-Face and Penguin in even if their role wasn't that necessary! I think it would have worked better if it was just Strange or him and Joker working together in secret or take out Strange and have Joker be Rahs' secret cronie.

Agree totally about the plot being unfocused. That was my biggest gripe with Arkham Asylum.

Batman can totally work in an open world, just not like this. So many places outside of the comic books forget about the whole "world's greatest detective" thing. An open world Batman game should involve Batman piecing together clues in the Batcave, running down leads in the city, and slowly unraveling a mystery while still cracking skulls and putting fear into the hearts of criminals.

And when I say "the city", I mean an actual Gotham with actual people in it. It bothers me to hear that this game looks just like Arkham City, because that doesn't make sense for a multitude of reasons. Glad I decided to skip this one.

Batman can work in an open world, I just think he hasn't so far. The things you mentioned would be awesome, but I doubt we'll see that kind of depth from warner brothers.

From what I've seen of the game, it looks like everything is being spoonfed to the player. For example, the detective part could have been well done if they took out the hugeass red triangle telling you where everything is. This doesn't make you feel like a badass detective at all. This is just a cheap cash in that is one of the reasons that I hate the suits that make games. Needless to say though, it'll probably sell big time.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

Yep. But it's a batman game, so it will sell a fuckton.

I wonder what Rocksteady is doing instead of Batman games right now. I looked around and I've found nothing. It's like they just croaked after doing Arkham City.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

No apparently they're working on another batman game. They're changing things up a bit and taking a different approach to batman, maybe even doing a silver age of comics version. Either way, they are working on another batman game, so yeah.

Ok. Cool. I mean anything those guys do is on my radar immediately. Those guys make great games.

I agree completely with you here. I really don't need ALL my games to be open world. To be honest at the moment, I kinda avoid open world games. It's be very reason I held off getting GTAV day 1. There's a lot to be said for a more concise driven experience.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

Yeah, I mean open world games are good, but if you're going for a narrative driven experience, nothing beats a well paced piece of gameplay.

I loved Asylum more than City, it felt like an episode of the Animated Series to me, and I never felt that this game must be open world to be better. I mean an open world Batman game would be cool because Batman does travel around Gotham alot but I don't think we are at a point were they have refined the formula enough for it to work. I mean it could work if they took what they did with Asylum while keeping the open world aspect. Like to get to a location use the Batmobile or Batwing and the area would be like Asylum, and the only time you would need to head out into the open world would be maybe during a chase or finding a lead on a criminal. I wouldn't mind if they went back to the AA formula.

That said, I'm not getting Origins, unless it's like 5 bucks or when the GOTY ED come sout, and that's a big maybe. Infact, I'm more interested in the action figures anyway.
