So big news, at least for me anyway, Thanks to Kay (one of our bloggers here and all around awesome gal) I got a sweet deal on a 60 gig PS3 with full compatibility with PS2 and PS1 games. I have a pretty good PS1 collection as that's maybe my favorite console ever, but I owned a Xbox last gen, so I missed out on a ton of amazing games. I'd like to change that.

So here's the deal, I basically put together a list of all the games I intend to pick up for this thing based on my own interests and what the internet states are the "must own" games for both systems. What I'm really interested in though, are those niche are the mid-tier titles. The oddballs. The kind of games I like to cover on Backloggers. I don't want to play crap, but if the game is interesting and has redeeming qualities, I'm interested. See the Backloggers page for some examples.

Here's the games I already already have on my list to pick up at some point:

PS 3:

  • Demon's Souls
  • InFamous Collection
  • Resistance Collection
  • Killzone Trilogy Collection
  • 3D Dot Game Heroes
  • Folklore
  • Valkyria Chronicles
  • Jak & Daxter Collection
  • The Sly Collection
  • Okami HD (Unless it's better on Wii. I haven't decided)
  • Tales of Xillia (also will pick up Xillia 2 when it comes out)
  • The Last Of Us
  • Uncharted 1-3
  • Heavenly Sword
  • Dragon's Crown
  • FF XV
  • Ar tonelico Qoga: Kneel of Ar Ciel

PS 2

  • Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia
  • Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica
  • Xenosaga 1-3
  • Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga 2
  • Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3 and 4
  • Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne
  • Primal
  • Mark of Kri
  • Tomb Raider Anniversary
  • Suikoden 3
  • Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
  • The Warriors
  • Star Ocean Till the End of Time
  • Gungrave
  • Gungrave Overdose
  • Maximo: Ghosts to Glory
  • Fatal Frame 1-3
  • Battle Engine Aquila
  • Slipheed: The Lost Planet
  • Raiden 3
  • Gradius 3&4
  • Shining Force EXA
  • Shining Tears
  • R-Type Final
  • Crimson Sea 2
  • Sky Gunner
  • Grim Grimoire
  • Final Fantasy XII (unless I hear that they're doing an HD remake using the International edition)
  • Grandia 2
  • Rogue Galaxy
  • Dark Cloud 2 (I hear I should just skip Dark Cloud 1)
  • Dragon Quest VIII
  • Shadow Hearts
  • Shadow Hearts: Covenant
  • Shadow Hearts: From the New World
  • Drakengard 1-2
  • Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
  • Odin Sphere

I've already picked up the ICO/Shadow of the Colossus HD collection, but other than that and these games, I'm unaware of anything else I should get. Let me know what other games you think I should consider! Thanks!

No Ratchet and Clank?  It has been a while, but I remember enjoying Wild Arms 3 and Onimusha 3 a fair amount.

I'll keep that in mind. There's a collection for those as well right?

Ratchet-Clank-Collection-Playstation-3  The HD collection is the first three R&C games.  They skipped out on Deadlocked, not that it was terrible, but it did not seem to fit with the rest of the series.

Wild Arms 3 and Onimusha are ps2 games that have not been released on the ps3.

One nice thing about your list of ps2 games is that a handful of them are available as ps2 classics on the psn.

Yes, the Ratchet and Clank Collection, R&C Future Tools of Destruction and R&C: A Crack in Time are very fun. You gotta get em. Into the Nexus is coming out soon too, which has Quest for Booty in it as well.

that's a lot of games in one franchise, but I remember those commercials being pretty awesome. I should get those.

Oh, and in my opinion, Okami was better on Wii BUT it looks way better on PS3. Up to you...

It kinda makes more sense on the Wii given the pointer interface, so I'll probably get it there.

You've already listed most of the exclusives that I would recommend for PS3, but there's a few more you might want to check out.

Journey Collector's Edition is worth a shot.  I wasn't quite as in to Journey and Flower as some were, but I had a good time with both.  I haven't played Flow (i bought the other two by themselves when they first came out), but I've also heard good things about it.

There's a few other PSN-exclusive games (I think) that I would also recommend giving a chance.  Dead Nation is a top-down shooter (like super smash tv) that was surprisingly fun.  I also enjoyed The Unfinished Swan and Papo & Yo.

Heavy Rain is another exclusive worth a look.  It gets alot of criticism for being a bunch of quick time events, but I enjoyed it for what it was.

Although I never really got that into it (the controls are too floaty), alot of people love Little Big Planet and it is very charming.

I think the create and share aspect of little big planet is kinda lost on me. I think I'll rent Heavy Rain at some point, but nothing about that game makes it look like a potential keeper to me sadly.

The Journey CE is a great idea though, so I'll make sure to grab that. I also completely forgot about Papo & Yo, that's right up my alley. Thanks!

Metal Gear Solid 2 thru 4? I really enjoyed them all. They'd be on the top of my list but I appreciate that they aren't everyones cup of tea

I have the MGS HD collection for my 360, but I should still pick up MGS 4. Good call.

I'd recommend Tokyo Jungle for how weird and fun it is. It's on sale all the time too so you can pick it up cheap. Ni No Kuni I think would also be something you'd like.

Glad to see Journey isn't on here. Let's keep it that way.

As weird as it sounds, I might not really enjoy Journey (I haven't tried it yet) but other people in my family might. I'm thinking about getting the collection just to see if it all lives up to the hype.

Journey was a great, albeit short experience. if you can get that one on sale, id say its worth it.

Love your ps2 collection. Heck, you even got Crimson Sea 2! (Kind of a cult classic. Wish Koei would make a new one in the series.) Ever played Crimson Tears? It's a rogue-like beat em up. Kinda good actually!

Angelo Grant Staff Writer

11/06/2013 at 12:35 PM

I don't have these yet, these are games I want to get. That's why I'm doing this thing :D

I have Crimson Tears on my wishlist, but I forgot to add it to this one for some reason. Dunno how that happened. Will fix.

I'd suggest checking out The Red Star for the PS2. It's a shooter/brawler hybrid that's very reminiscent of Treasure (high praise if you ask me). It's a great co-op game.

I would suggest for the ps2

1.Devil Summoner 1 & 2 shin megami tensei

2. Growlanser Generations

3. Soul Nomad

4. Disgaea Hour of Darkness

5.Phantom Brave

6. Culdcept an awesome monopoly slash magic the gathering hybrid

ps1

1. Final Fantasy Tactics

2. Tactics Ogre

Awesome job on scoring a 60 gig ps3 the only system fully compatible with ps2 and ps1 games and at tax time im getting me one. And by the way the titles I named are some of the very best for the ps2 and ps1.

For the PS2 I would include Grandia 3 and Suikoden V. Grandia 3 starts off strong but gets kind of weird late game. Suikoden V goes back to the roots of the series, plays more like a polished version of 1 & 2. Not really sure why this game is so overlooked.

Angelo Grant Staff Writer

11/08/2013 at 05:44 PM

Sacrilege I know, but I haven't played a Suikoden game yet. I suppose I should fix that :D

You have a nice list of games.  I wouldn't advise Grandia II on the PS2 though.  If you have the means, get it on the DC.  It's been years since I played it, but it's balls compared to the DC version, IMO.  It's not so bad that's it's unplayable though.  It's a good game, but prepare for glitches and slowdown.

I hated Odin Sphere.  If you can, get the digital version on the PS3.  I heard it's better than the PS2 version.

I played Heavenly Sword for the first time this year.  I was disappointed with that game.  I thought I would like it.

You're not talking me out of Odin Sphere. I friggin love that game :D

I don't have a Dreamcast, but yeah, I know that's the better version. I gotta give myself SOME limitations though or I'll go broke collecting.

Heavenly Sword is something I'll pick up on the cheap just to check it out. I don't have high hopes for it myself, but I like some of the creativity that stuido has.

I think I'm gonna go through my Amazon wish list this weekend and add the games I want to from what you've recommended. Thanks guys. Before I forget though, how do you all feel about the .hack games?
