Grabbing chiptunes from all over the timeline

Past, Present, and Future Perfect

From: Zelda: Oracle of Ages

Remixed by: PROTO-DOME

I think it's pretty well established that most of us here on Pixlbit like retro games, sometimes A LOT, so here's some great retro-sounding tunage from a retro Zelda game. This remix is almost entirely chiptune, though you will hear some piano and modern drum kits as well. It's pretty interesting the remixer himself said in his submission to OCR:

It’s a pretty straightforward mix. Imagine Oracle of Ages duelling Megaman in a battlefield of 8-bit percussion and Zelda SFX, whilst a piano, a couple of pads and various drum kits try to form some kind of support to aid the bloodshed of the two great soundtracks colliding- that is what this song is. There’s all kinds of instruments in it actually- there’s an organ from Chrono Trigger, the MMX drum kit, a choir from some SNES game and the different leads span from NES, SNES and GB along with the percussion. Not to mention the analogue stuff, modern synths and drum kits.

I certainly can't separate all those different sounds by just listening to it but it's cool all the same that so many varied chiptune sounds are working together in this piece. There's so much energy here that it can't help but lift your spirits a bit. So grab some headphones and your childlike sense of wonder and enjoy this blast from the past, present, and future.

You are something of an oddball these days since you like strategy games so much and Japanese ones at that! *GASP!* Lol. Certainly can't fault you for liking that SNES/PS1 style of gaming so much and I've learned about lots of great games from reading your posts that I never would have known about otherwise. Glad you liked the song Smile

Speaking of Japanese strategy games, I noticed several of the Record of Agarest War games are free on PSN right now. Pretty sure anyway.

Great shore. I just love the use of samples from other songs.

I know, right? It's a great homage to all that classic old music.

Me too! It's actually from one of the (many) OCR albums I've never listened to all the way through: Essence of Lime.

Nice! That was like 8 bit Zelda on crack lol. I hope to get a SNES next month so I can play Link to the Past again.... either that, or Mega Man 5. (It's really expensive) Undecided

Wow, I'm surprised you don't actually have an SNES right now. That gets my vote!

I have a FC Twin. Which is a clone system that plays NES and SNES games. There are some incompatibility issues with a couple of games though. I had to buy an original NES just to play Bucky O'Hare properly. Thanks for your vote, and I'm sorry if this has nothing to do with your blog lol.

No worries, man Smile It's crazy some of the things that are out there now to play old games with, though I think the FC Twin is something of an old standby at this point. But the other day I was in Toys R Us looking for Christmas gifts for nieces and nephews and I saw this Genesis rip off with wireless controllers, 80 pre-installed games, and a cartridge slot. What really surprised me, though, is that the box said it was licensed by Sega! I don't see how that would make them any money but I can't help but wonder if the thing actually works well.

In all honestly I don't think I would've picked out the other sounds from the other games that found themselves in ths remix. I did catch the Chrono Trigger sound piece but I still can't hear what could've been used as Mega Man tunes, besides the sound bits.

I wouldn't have noticed either if the remixer hadn't mentioned it. Just have to take his word for it, I guess. I just think it's crazy that all that stuff is actually in there.
