I could see this happening. Of course, I could also see them not trying to compete and sticking with handhelds altother. I really don't think they're out of this generation yet anyway with the Wii U. Bring along a price drop and new exclusives in a year and they're the hot thing for next Christmas. Their line-up is already starting to look pretty impressive. They really need to get more 3rd party support. It's a shambles when not even Madden is on the U
A Wild Theory, based off of absolutely nothing.

I stopped into Target yesterday and found myself in the videogame section. I only stopped by to see if they had PS4 games in stock. They did have the games, but I was somewhat surprised to see a demo unit for the PS4. It looks pretty sweet in person. I was not as wide or thick as I was expecting, but it is fairly deep. So deep that I am a little worried that it won't fit on my entertainment center. That is not really important because I booted up Knack and only played for a minute or so, but it felt simple but good. Also, it looked very nice.
Anyways, I read this article on GamesIndustry.biz and it got me thinking about Nintendo. These thoughts started to get me excited, and making theories based off of absolutely nothing. This is what I was thinking about...
Everybody keeps talking about how this past generation has been the generation that never ended. The Xbox 360 was around twice as long as the Original Xbox before its successor decided to show up. The PS2 came 5 years after the psone. The PS3 came 6 years after the PS2, and now the PS4 is 7 years after the PS3 launched. So, Micrsoft and Sony's consoles have been staying around longer and longer. Nintendo, on the other hand, has stayed fairly consistent. It has typically been a 5 year cycle, with a couple of them being 6 years. When you actually think about it, the Wii's generation only lasted one year longer than the majority of Nintendo's consoles, with the exception of the NES. I highly doubt that the Wii U will last longer than the Wii. So, what does that mean? Nintendo will most likely release a new console in 5 years...
The majority of people expect the next generation of gaming to last 10 years or so. I think that this could be of great benefit to Nintendo. The Wii U's successor would most likely come out midway through the lifetime of the PS4 and Xbox One. At that point they should be able to make a console that is comparable to the PS4 and Xbox One. They would have a console that could receive plenty of 3rd party support, and also be something NEW. If I started this generation with a PS4 about halfway through I would most likely contemplate getting an Xbox One. If Nintendo were to release a shiny new alternative to the Xbox One, I would definitely jump on that first.
I hope that what I am trying to say makes sense. While Nintendo may not seem to be in the best position nowadays, could they be in an even stronger position several years down the road? I guess that we will have to wait and see.
