Cary's Top Five Favorite Zelda Characters

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is being released soon, and I’m really excited about it.  As a big fan of classic top down Zelda titles, I’m super happy for this one since it’s a sequel to the SNES A Link to the Past.  So in honor of the release of this new Zelda title, here are my top five favorite Zelda characters, just for fun!

5. Tingle

Nobody likes Tingle because he’s awkward, weird, and disturbing.  But I think that’s why I like him.  At least just a little bit.  I tend to like annoying characters sometimes.  In Japan, Tingle even stars in a few games that never came out to the US.  I wish Nintendo would put them in a collection and release them in the US somehow.  I know one of the titles is kind of like a Zelda game in that you explore dungeons, but your only goal is to collect more rupees, so it kind of reminds me of the Wario Land of the Zelda series.  Another Tingle game is a Balloon Fight/Balloon Kid remake.  I’d like to try them out at least.

4. Impa (Ocarina of Time)

Impa appears in many games as Zelda’s attendant.  Sometimes she’s an old woman, and in other games she’s younger.  And in some games, she’s even both! (I knew it was her right away in that one game, if you know what I mean)  But my favorite version of Impa is in Ocarina of Time.  She’s portrayed as a strong lady who is nice to Link and protects Zelda, and I think that’s cool.

3. Scrapper

In Skyward Sword, you explore and interact with an ancient race of robots in the desert.  You even have a friend in the game repair one of the old robots to help you out in the present day.  Your friend names the robot Scrapper, and boy does that little robot have an attitude!  He calls Link “Mr. Shortypants,” and always tries to talk down to him!  Even better, when Scrapped meets Fi, the mechanical-like female spirit of the Master Sword, he falls head over gears for her.  It’s robot love, the purest love of all.  He’ll do anything for her, even if it means having to work together with Link. If you’ve beaten the game, you know about the sad part of the ending.  Well that’s not what made me sad.  I was sad because they didn’t say what happened to Scrapper!  Only bad part about Scrapper is the escort mission you have to do with him in the volcano.  Luckily, that’s even bearable thanks to the fact that enemies don’t return, even if you mess up.

2. Agitha

Twilight Princess is one of my least favorite Zelda games (but I still like it), so it’s strange that my last two favorite characters are from that game.  Agitha is proof that there is probably traces of lead in the Hyrule water, as she is certified bat-poop crazy.  She calls herself “Princess Agitha” although I doubt she’s royalty at all.  She lives in a house in town and if you bring special shiny bugs to her, she gets so excited that she sings a poem about the bugs going to a fancy ball dance party.  You get rewards in return, so it’s worth your while to track down these bugs for this overly obsessed lady.  But what’s really fun to do is that if you visit her house and leave without giving her all the bugs you’ve collected, you’ll hear her growl as you step out the door, “I know you still have bugs…”

1. Princess Zelda

Unlike Princess Peach, who probably has her own wing in Bowser’s Castle, she’s been there so much; Princess Zelda just doesn’t LET Ganon or whoever capture her.  She actually does something about it.  Even in the very first game, she split up and hid pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom to keep Ganon from getting it.  My favorite version of Zelda is in Twilight Princess.  She tries and sacrifices all she can to save her kingdom and even admits her mistakes.  And she’s really pretty, too, ha ha!  Ocarina of Time Zelda is also neat, although I knew from the beginning that she was Sheik.  Zelda in Spirit Tracks is also notable because you kind of sort of get to play as her, and she’s the most helpful to Link out of any Zeldas.  Well, OK, she’s scared of mice, but hey, give her a break.  I’d like to see a Zelda game where you get to play as Zelda instead of Link.  I’m getting a little tired of him.  And yes I am aware of that one CDi game, that doesn’t count.

Conclusions

And those are my top five favorite Zelda characters!  I’m looking forward to seeing new ones in A Link Between Worlds.  In the comments section, let me know what you think of my picks and tell me YOUR favorite Zelda characters!  Later!  --Cary

you're right about Zelda.  She always has a secret plan to depose Ganon.  She's a good role model, strong, beautiful, intelligent, thoughtful...

Not only that, but in a lot of games, she helps you defeat Ganon, too!

I like Impa.  She should have her own game.

I never thought of that, but that is a good idea.

Damn good list. I'd love to see a game where you play as Zelda as well! Actually I want to see a game where you play as a princess trapped in a castle who decides she's not going to wait for a prince and just busts out herself, using whatever she can find to aid her escape and battles. Then she can meet the prince on his way there and turn him into her bitch. I'd play the shit out of that.

You kind of do some parts of that in various places on the GameCube Paper Mario game...

Huh. I definitely need to play them then. The only paper mario I played was on N64.

Paper Mario on GameCube is probably the best Mario RPG out there, and the best RPG on GameCube.

Yeah it's brilliant.  The writing is superbly fantastic, and the gameplay doesn't get stale or bloated like other RPGs tend to be.

I definitly agree with Zelda. She might sometimes be a damsel in distress, but atleast she has charisma and she does more than the traditional characters of that kind. I also agree that she should be playable in one game, though my idea for that would be a traditional Zelda game where you get two storylines, one being from Link and the other for Zelda.

As for other characters, call me boring, but my favorite is Link. It's just that he represents the character and with him you feel like you are inmersed in the universe of the game.

Yeah, when I'm tromping around as Link, I'm always wondering what Zelda is doing right then.

Good observations about Zelda. I also noticed her relevance in Link's adventures as well. She is a princess of action and effort.

Impa was pretty cool in Ocarina of Time. I liked her character model in that game.

Character models in original N64 games were kind of ugly, you had to use your imagination sometimes.  But Impa was cool regardless.

I never understood the hate behind Tingle either. He's a goodhearted goober at any rate. Sure, he has an obsession with fairies but I don't recall him ever hurting one.

I'm not sure he's totally goodhearted, but he is a goober. Thanks for reading!

Tingle never plucked the wings off fairies did he? If so my opinion of him would drastically change,Cary. lol.

No he never did anything cruel, he was just disturbing and bonkers.

Great list bud! And here is something I had done that hopefully will help to satisfy some of your curiousity! Cool

Ha!  That's awesome.  Zelda ate her spinach and is going to clobber Ganon.

Speaking of Ganon, I always liked Pig Monster Ganon way better than Green Man Ganondorf.

Me too, Cary! To me, Ganondorf being the leader of a gang of thieves kind of seemed like a step down from the mythical Ganon who was practically a demi-god. Ganondorf just looked like a spray painted dude who read too much "Men's Health".

At least in most games where you fight Green Man Ganondorf, you also get to fight Pig Monster Ganon, too.

Truth! I feel like whenever I slip on ice, trip, knock something over etc Ganon's laugh from when you die in Zelda II should be playing...

Sorry to say, but I just don't like Zelda 2 that much.

Honestly, I never spent much time with Zelda 2. From what I've read, it had some interesting ideas laid down, but something definitely felt missing from it when I had played it. A Link to the Past still stands as my favorite Zelda title, and is probably in my top 3 of all time. The leap between the NES LoZ's and ALttP felt absolutely massive, and it's an absolute master class in design. Seriously cannot say enough good things about that game!!

I bet you're excited about A Link Between Worlds, then, since it's a sequel to A Link to the Past.

My favorite Zelda game is Link's Awakening.

I never understood why people are down on Twilight Princess. It's certainly not my favorite game in the series, but i enjoyed it a lot. And it has the best Zelda, I definitely agree with you there. She is intense in that game and then Ganon uses her like a puppet or whatever at the end. Great stuff for sure.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of Twilight Princess either (graphics are so brown and muddy it made it hard to play).  But Zelda is awesome in that game (and really pretty, too).
