Xcoms: Enemy Within is a standalone expansion which is a complete game in itself, theres no need to own Xcom: Enemy Unknown and let me just say that if you have never played enemy unknown then start with Enemy Within cause its tons better than Enemy Unknown.

XCOM: Enemy Within was developed by Firaxis and published by 2K Games. It is available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Balancing between an expansion and a sequel, Enemy Within both becomes the best XCOM to date and somewhat of a let down.

Last year’s XCOM: Enemy Unknown was a near-perfect experience for strategy fans. It modernised a 90s PC classic with terrific results, and goes down as one of the single greatest experiences of its genre to come around this generation. In light of this, XCOM: Enemy Within is a risk. It aims to tamper with something that many perceived to be flawless, expanding on Enemy Unknown by adding several new tactical layers to gameplay instead of just adding a few bells and whistles. As an expansion,Enemy Within also has to prove its worth in terms of value. Why, after the countless hours spent with Enemy Unknown, should you fork out for something that doesn’t claim to be a proper sequel?

Thankfully, Enemy Within is spring-loaded with new content in the gameplay compartment which revolutionises the experience. Sure, it is the same base game asEnemy Unknown in concept, but with everything from new maps, classes and mission types Enemy Within feels, if anything, more like a sequel than an expansion.

A lot of what’s new revolves around a new resource – meld. This valuable substance is found in canisters dotted around the game’s maps, and its very existence brings us to the first instance of change in XCOM’s strategic gameplay. Since this substance comes in ticking time-bomb canisters which expire after a set number of turns, It will have you moving faster then before and really makes you rethink your strategy and unlike enemy unknown where you progressed slowly on the maps with the meld counter ticking down it makes you rethink your whole strategy.

So does enemy within warrant a purchase?? I say yes its does for enemy within what dragon's dogma does for Dark Arisen  and does it very well, my game was very refreshing and never felt like a chore and although ironman mode is nearly impossible the easier settings makes things alot funner.

So bottom line is the graphics are very good and on par for this gen consoles, the sound effects and music score is right there out of xfiles done subperb, the gameplay is very Addicting anD the game is awesome, they did away with alot of the clipping issues found in Xcom s enemy unknown the game is better in everyway then the first one and one game I highly recommend.

My score is 4.5 out of 5 Excellent

I don't play many games like this, but I'll still pick up this game some day.

I've spent 40 hours on this expansion in the last week. It's devouring my life. IMO this makes it 10 times the experience of the original. A) The new maps add a tonne of variety, so you don't end up in that fucking forest map every goddamn game. B) Exalt adds some new mission types and generally shakes things up a bit. C) Mechs and Gene mods are an awesome touch, and bring a bit mor variety to the table and D) BUGFIXING! There are still bugs but holy shit the game has improved. There's less bullshit as well, I've found. I haven't been sniped through three walls for a critical hit. I haven't seen a bezerker ghost through a wall in the original, and the pathfinding has improved significantly. Oh, and E) There is more customisation of units, and FUCKING ACCENTS OTHER THAN AMERICAN!!!!!

It's rare when an expansion has enough meat on its' bones to stand alone as a full sequel. It seems like firaxis is bringing that "old school generosity" back into play and I like it!

I'm going to have to grab this now. I wanted to get Enemy Unknown but now that Enemy Within is out I'll grab it instead since it has the full game, bug fixes, the big expansion, etc. This is really cool, I think I'll like this game a lot.
