Proof that Metal can be Beautiful

A lot of people have this idea that metal is always harsh and about aggression. I beg to differ, and I posit that it can create some very beautiful music. To prove this, have some songs.

David Maxim Micic

Ok, so I could only find the full album to post, but what I really wanted to show you is the second song. If you skip to that, that's what I want to discuss. This is a fucking gorgeous song that has some really nice chorusy guitars, piano, violin, and some wonderful vocal harmonies. At some point in the song it becomes a swing song, but for the most part, this song is truly gorgeous.

Stones of Octobers Sobbing - Maudlin of the Well

Maudlin of the well is my favourite band of all time. This song mixes metal with classical and folk to great effect. Simply magnificent.

Forget Not - Ne Obliviscaris

It's pretty. Listen to it.

Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde - Alcest

Alcest are one of the biggest names in Blackgaze - a merging of black metal guitars with shoegaze music. His vocals are clean, and the music is gorgeous.

I'm really digging the David Maxim Micic. The whole album is only $5 on Amazon. Score! Forget Not was nice too.

i was thinking a lot about music lately, as I usually do.  There's a lot of music I hate, but people might hate the music I like too.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, ya know?  I fucking hate pop music but a lot of people love it.  Some people complain about music that has no melody. Well, melody is also in the eye of the beholder.  Sometimes I enjoy music without melody that repeats ad nauseum.

I mostly listen to modern classical, and a little old classical.  That's the only music that really interests me these days.

But the very idea of music, of what it is, and what it does -- it's divine to me, and is proof of the divine to me.  There are other mediums that are great, but there's just something about music... I dunno I can't put my finger on it.
