Video Game Christmas music? There's a lot more than you think!
It's December, and everyone is getting into the Christmas spirit. Why not here on Pixlbit too? For the next three weeks, we're going to hear some great VG Christmas music! Christmas actually appears in quite a number of games, but many of these themes are also just wintry, which often have that Christmas feel. I hope you enjoy these picks, and come back for more.
Ice Mountain Act 2 from Sonic Advance/Composed byTatsuyuki Maeda and Yutaka Minobe
This theme is very catchy and upbeat throughout. It has that classic sound to it, almost sounding 8-bit. It's not very Christmas-y, but it has great winter flavor and style. Sonic can somehow still move very fast in the cold, but the driving music pushes him along with some charisma.
Sherbert Land from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!/Composed by Shinobu Tanaka and Kenta Nagata
DD is one of my favorite Mario Kart games, and the series has always had good music. I love this song in particular. It's very happy and cheery, and gives that winter feel through shakers and its solid use of instruments. Driving over ice? Listen to Sherbert Land!
Winters from Earthbound/Composed by Keichi Suzuki and Hirokazu Tanaka
Earthbound is an amazing game, enhanced by its characters, story, and music. The theme for Winters is so wonderful; the jingle bells come in right away, and the melody is played by some kind of clarinet/oboe instrument. Part B of the song takes the melody in another direction while still maintaining a great feel. The nostalgia is high with this one.
Frozen Hyrule from The Legend of Zelda: Four Sword Adventures/Composed byKoji Kondo and Asuka Ota
This song takes the familiar Dark World theme from A Link to the Past and makes it sound cold and wintry. This plays at a time when Hyrule is "frozen," or in other words, it's snowing. It's a theme we all know and love with a slight variation that adds a new feel to it, and that is a good thing!
Ice World from Tetris Attack/Composed by Masaya Kuzume and Yuka Tsujiyoko
It's another theme that is very catchy and upbeat. If you couldn't guess, I love those kind of themes. Ice World has a driving beat, which it follows consistently throughout. A flute plays the melody, trumpets accent that melody with short bursts, and voices come in near the end to give the song a smoother feel.
Frosty Village from Diddy Kong Racing/Composed by Dave Wise
I've saved the best for last. This song is awesome! This crazy theme plays while you're racing through a snowy village with houses lit up for Christmas. The level itself is great, and the music just makes it that much better. So what do we have here? Well, jingle bells, flutes, guitars, piano, wumping bass, and I can't even tell what that main instrument is; all of this is meshed together to give you a crazy awesome song. Dave Wise is truly amazing.
