So being the flight sim slash arcade player I am I picked up Air Conflict Vietnam for a modest $20 and thought I would see if it is as good as I enjoyed Air Conflict Secret War and my honest opinion no not quite, the Vietnam War was a terrible place to be in the 60s and we lost alot of good men and women and the fact is technology was not that advanced and jets were still in the beta stages and were not as advanced as todays jet fighters.

Dont let it fool you the graphics are not that great

I will start with the bad my first issue was the limited space to play in I mean I get ready to line up my bombing run and my jets flying so fast and the boundaries in the first mission is so small that I was out of bounds before I got lined up for the bombing run and after the run I found myself struggling to get back in bounds now to me thats totally unexcepable with Air Conflicts Secret wars there were no boundries and its like they got lazy with developing this game.  Im surprised that Kalypso actually produced this game like it is the graphics as far as explosions and aircraft are concerned did very well but when it comes to the terrain thats a whole other story the word crappy comes to mind its really a mess on the ground when your in gunners veiw from the huey or chinook the targets are red circles which you can basically erase at least thats what it looks like to me but im a flight sim buff so I may be a little harsh but this game does have its share of flaws.

Cockpit veiws are authentic to the jet

The sound is ok why they didnt include actual music from the flicks like Platoon, Apocalypse Now, or something along those lines are beyond me instead they put some hum ho 60 tunes that were really very little known in the day songs like Paint it Black ( Rolling Stones ) or Hendrix ( all along the watchtower ) should be there but are not,  why?? is beyond me but everything else is good.

                      Some aspects are not bad

The gameplay is choppy at best very twitchy is the best way to explain it on a scale of 1 the worst and 10 the best I would say a 3 its very frustrating at times, the speed is way to fast and slowing down helps very little and controlling the jets and choppers are a chore.

The game could have been really good

You know I wish we could get a good Vietnam game of any kind cause this era of war was going on while I was young and I personally know people from the war and I know historically just about everything there is to know about the war but if your like me wanting a awesome vietnam game keep waiting cause this is not it and thats a shame cause I really wanted to like it and for $20 you can still get something better.

My score 2.5 out of 5 dont waste your time

I've looked at this game on Steam.  It's too bad it's not too good, as it could be an interesting subject matter.  Thanks for the review, Rodney!

Sounds like it should be called "Not-Ace-Combat".

I never noticed that there isn't a ton of games around the Vietnam War, until you mentioned it. It seems like the majority of games go from WWII, to today's conflicts in the Middle East.

As for the game itself, it's a shame that it didn't turn out better. This is the type of game I would take a chance on, especially with the price.

I love helicopters in games. You would think for a Vietnam game the first thing you would do is get the chopper controls just right since I think there was a lot of that in that war. I can imagine some really cool missions flying helicopters into the jungle to drop off troupes and pick up wounded while avoiding getting shot down. I mean, the scene begining the movie Predator is totally like the beginning of a mission in Vietnam, or at least, it should be. Or the opening to Far Cry: Blood Dragon where you shoot a chain gun from a helicopter at the start. I landed copters in all sorts of wooded areas in Just Cause and searched for orbs with the copter in Crackdown 2. Those games had great choper controls. Just do that, add some Predator style attitude and intensity of action, and put it all in real locations in Vietnam. Done.
