Bought a 3DS XL!

So long time no see! I made a rare impulse purchase the other day by buying a 3DS. And not just any 3DS, but the nifty-looking Zelda: A Link Between Worlds edition! I mostly bought it just because I had a craving for Ocarina though. Regardless, hopefully this will get me out of the gaming blues as I hardly played any games these few past months.

Since I never bought as DS, that gives me a huge lineup of games to choose from in addition to 3DS games. Though rather than spending a fortune on ebay, I’ll probably just buy a few games to start. Bravely Default is one of my most wanted games right now. What’s more surprising is that Brain Age is also pretty high up there. Maybe it’s just me getting older.

Other games I want include Monster Hunter 4, Professor Layton, Scribblenauts Unlimited, Tales of the Abyss, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, and Virtue’s Last Reward. That about does it for 3DS games but I’m kind of drawing a blank on DS games. Aside from the standard Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Castlevania franchises on that system, the list of potential good games is too big to tell. Maybe you guys could give me a little help?

Anyway, hope everyone has been making the best of this crazy world of ours. There's at least more than enough fantasy lands to distract us right now!

Congrats man! Getting a new handheld is always fun, and the library for it is huge! I wish I could help you on finding new games, but I have no idea about the games it offers, but luckly there are tons of folks here who can point you in the right direction for hidden gems, as well as the major blockbusters.

Yeah, this is the first new gaming system I've bought in at least two years and it is exciting having all these new gaming options open up to me. And yes, based on the comments below there's a lot of recommendations here!

What do like, Kevin? RPGs, platformers, puzzle games? I really liked Hotel Dusk, but it isn't for everyone. And the DQ games IV-VI and IX were favorites, as well. And Okamiden, Radiant Historia, the Picross games, the Professor Layton games, and Theresia were others I liked a lot.

I'm not picky when it comes to gaming genres. I do find the visual-novel and puzzle games being more of a preference lately... which makes Hotel Dusk a pretty perfect recommendation! Radiant Historia is another game I read a lot about and always wanted so many years ago.

awesome man!  I want the Mario and Luigi: Dream Team XL.  I think it looks really classy.

Never heard of that one. But it does indeed look classy!

Yea! I saw it at Gamestop the other day and wanted it. I don't think I can trade in my regular 3DS for it though. But one can dream can't one.dreamteam3ds

yeah I can't really justify it either since I already have the regular 3DS.  Maybe sometime, but I have other things I need that are more important.

Scribblenauts Unlimited is on sale at amazon right now for 12 dollars

Based off your user name, I could guess you love Scribblenauts a lot or something! I'll certainly consider getting the game in the near future.

Congrats, I'm getting that one too so it goes with the other one. I may need to buy the game twice because the 3DS bundle may not come with the Zelda chest.

Nice! Hope you like it. Mine didn't come with any Zelda chest though. Now I feel like I'm missing out!

Elite Beat Agents was one of my favorites on DS, and one of my favorites in general. I think I've said it was my favorite game ever; not sure if I believe that, but it's really fun (and challenging later on) and it's up there.

I've been looking at Ghost Trick for a while myself as far as DS games. Otherwise, I guess you can look at my DS collection, and see if anything sticks out to you.

Congrats on the new 3DS by the way, I'm jealous.

Elite Beat Agents is definitely one of those games I had long forgotten about. I've heard nothing but good things about that one though so that will certainly be one to consider. From your collection, I will likely give Spirit Tracks a shot at some point.

I definitely like the game for the most part, but even with going online to look at tutorials, this final trip to the hub dungeon you return to periodically is a pain in my ass. It's the only Zelda game I own I have yet to finish. The controls do not make it more fun. Overall, I reccommend it, but try before you buy if you can.

Well, in all likelyhood, by the time I'm done with Ocarina and A Link Between Worlds the last thing I will probably want to play is a Zelda game. I won't be trying that game for a while.

The DS and 3DS has some good games.  I just finished A Link Between Worlds a few days ago.  It's a good game, but I still enjoy playing Link to the Past more.  I think the last good DS game I played was Ghost Trick or was it one of the Castlevanias?  Either way they were pretty good.

When you get a chance, send me your friend code. Cool

Oh no, the dreaded friend codes! I will definitely remember you put yours here whenever I decide to deal with that thing!

Understand.  I had my 3DS for months before I took the time to figure out where the codes went in. Laughing

Coolness bro!  I want to get A Link Between Worlds soooo bad!

I was a little disappointed to open my 3DS and find it was only a download code!

Pffft, yeah!  I they've been doing that ever since they started "bundling" stuff like Mario Kart 7 with the 3DS XL.  I was kinda bummed when I got that bundle.  I like physical media and instruction manuals.  Plus, I didn't like the idea of having some of that strogae capacity used up already with a whole game.  But hey, in the long run, I got over it and just enjoyed my 3DS.  At least you got a Zelda game with yours (not that there's anything wrong with Mario Kart).

Halochief90

12/16/2013 at 03:55 PM

At least a Link Between Worlds is a game I will very likely play often. It won't just be hogging space for nothing. Digital games have their own conveniences, but I certainly prefer physical. Next time I'll double check on a Nintendo bundle!

Congrats!  It's exciting getting a new system.  I just got one last week too, and have  never had any type of DS before.  I also got it with a Link Between Worlds, but it just came with the game and wasn't the special edition 3DS.  There are so many games I want now.  I'm already playing zelda and love it.  Between games I've already ordered for myself or that I know I'm getting for Christmas, I'll also soon be getting Mario and Luigi, Super Mario 3D Land, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey, Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor Overclocked, Professor Layton, 999, Etrian Odyssey Millenium Girl, and Phoenix Wright.  I think they will keep me busy for awhile, but there's probably at least a couple dozen more that I want.

Halochief90

12/14/2013 at 10:16 PM

Yeah, there's so many opportunities opening up by getting the system. Etrain Odyssey is one I forgot about as well. I don't know how I'll find the time or patience to play all these games!

The 3DS XL, mine stayed off since August after I beat Chrono Trigger (DS) on the system. I'm glad that Nintendo finally added Nintendo Network Functionality to the handheld; now WiiU and 3DS wallets are combined. Bought Super Hang-On 3D and River City Ransom the other day.

Halochief90

12/14/2013 at 10:24 PM

Wow, that's a long time to leave a system off. I'm one to talk though as my 360 has basically taken the role of a dust collector this past year.

I'd really recommend the Phoenix Wright series for both DS and 3DS. I wasn't big on the idea at first if it's off putting, but it's the best point and click adventure series I've played. Not sure if you don't like Pokemon or never tried it, but X and Y or Heartgold/Soulsilver are great places to start if you want to get into it. I think you'd also enjoy World Ends With You, nothing really like it out there.

Halochief90

12/14/2013 at 10:26 PM

Oh yeah, The World Ends With You was always something I was interested in. Maybe something unique like that is exactly what I need too.

Great choice man! I love my 3DS for both, the games I missed on the DS and the new games for the console.

If you want a Mario craving, go with Super Mario 3D Land, which IMO it's not as impressive as 64 or the Galaxy games but it's entertaining and fun for the Mario fan. For RPG craving, Etrian Odyssey Untold (my first game of the series).

On the normal DS, I recommend Pokemon Platinum if you want to get updated on the modern Pokemon games. As for other games, the first Phoenix Wright and Sonic Rush are also great pics.

I played a bunch of Mario 3D Land on my nephew's 3DS. I couldn't get into it for whatever reason but it probably has something to do with my preference for 2D Mario. I might have given that Sonic Rush game a try as well. I also want to give a 3DS Etrian a try. So many games!

There are so many games to recommend, but I'll pick one: the Phoenix Wright series.

That Zelda 3DS is really nice.

Considering that's the third comment in a row to recommend Phoenix Wright, maybe that's one worth looking into.

There's plenty of those Prof. Layton games on DS. Four of them to be exact. I really loved Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time and the two Advance Wars games on DS.

Yes I will have more than enough Proffesor Layton for one person!

First let me start off by saying that I hate you. J/K I want that Zelda XL so bad but it ain't happening. Wow not having had a DS either makes you spoiled for choice. So much to play I really wouldn't know where to start 'cept that there are a ton of great recommendations above me.

Enjoy! :)

Haha to be fair, I felt my wallet's pain when I went to the cash register! I find it to believe I waited this long to get a DS!
