Forward from the author,

I’m not entirely sure I agree with a lot of the criteria for awarding the best of any game of any year. With so much software and hardware to select from, it’s kind of difficult to keep up with every game, let alone narrow down a list to just one. I haven’t played most games on most Top 10 lists simply because I hadn’t enough time to play all of them. I might be missing out on some quality experiences, according to gaming journalists, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t enjoyed the time I’ve spent with games I did choose to play this year.

My list isn’t about what is the best game compared to all the games released this year, but about the ones that I actually had time to play that I thought were fun. I might still go out and buy other games, based on recommendations from other blogs and such, but this is what I enjoyed, in no significant order of importance, my favorite 5 games of 2013.

DMC

At this point, my taste for action games has been somewhat diminishing over the last few years. I rarely play any platformers or action games like I used to, except for the occasional Mario game that Nintendo puts out, and of those, the only new game I tried this year was Super Luigi U.

DMC is no Mario game. DMC is however, a very linear designed combo based action game with a bit of platforming thrown in and wonderful sound and art design. It is possible to play through the whole campaign in one sit through, although it will take a dozen or so hours. I used to prefer to play long games that took a long time to finish, milking as much game as I could from my purchase, but now I tend to appreciate when a A-Level game with a complete package turns up and I can complete the whole thing on a weekend. This game also freshened up the image of an older franchise, which was pretty daring considering the backlash from fans. I enjoyed the new direction. I’m looking forward to whatever next game Ninja Theory makes, or if a DMC2 will ever be made. The game was released early in the year, and it still left a pretty good impression on me. I’ll give it 5-Stars.

Conclusion: This game revitalized my interest in action games and platformers. I look forward to playing Metal Gear Revengence and Bayonetta 2.

I don't know if I've quite reached my limit with action/platformers yet, as they remain what I tend to gravitate towards as safe and easy guarantees, but I have been getting more into puzzle type games, lately, as well as games requiring more exploration. That, or I'm just playing more slowly as I get older.

Glad you liked it. Too bad I missed the sale on it, but my CPU didn't meet the recommended requirements.

Well, portable games, MMOs and RPGs have been more of interest to me lately, more so than hack-n-slash beat-m-ups. But, I can enjoy a good action game when it comes along. Not that the genre is bad or dead, but it just doesn't grab my attention anymore. Games like God of War for example.

Did you grow up more with MMOs and RPGs? Because I think the fact I prefer action/adventure or fast/arcadey style games is because they are what I grew up with.

Portable games, I am a fan of as well, and have been forever. If I could get a 3DS and a PS4, I'd be in heaven.

I grew up playing action/platoformers as well, but over time I've moved on to more strategy and online games. I just prefer to customize a party or explore worlds more than beat up all the things. I do like Bayonetta and DMC though.

With portable gaming, you dont have to sit in front of the TV for a long time to finish something any more. You can just reach over and play 3DS/VITA or iPAD for a bit at a time and still get things finished.

haven't played this yet but I downloaded it with PSN+.  I really should play it, but there's just so many games!

Hope you had a good holiday, man.

Watup Snee. This list is more about "MY FAVORITE" games, not necessarily the best games of the year. I think because DMC came out early in the year, and there wasn't much else to compete with it for my time is the main reason I played it honestly. But, I'm glad I did because it is one of my favorite DMC or games in that genre like God of War and Bayonetta for example. I especially like the music. It's really trippy and wierd. Good stuff. Did you put your top list already? I might have missed it. Looking forward to more stuff from your blogs next year. Cool

DMC looks like a cool game.  I played the demo a bit, but not enough to remember if I enjoyed it or not.  I still plan to get the game.  IMO, the Devil May Cry series was getting a bit stale, so any change was a welcome to me.

I think the game is short enough to be able to finish in a reasonable amount of time. The new layer of paint gave it a new level of freshness. I don't think it was terribly hard either.

Have yet to try this one; or buy it for that matter. It's on my 'to do' list, lol.

You should try a demo if possible if you aren't sure. It will be dirt cheap soon.

Despite my inexperinece with the Devil May Cry franchise (I only played the first bits of the third game), this game looks so good. I hope to get it on Steam soon.

I think it was on sale recently. You may want to catch it when it's like $5 next steam sale for sure. It's like $25 right now.

I really did not care when this came out, but since it will be free next month for plus members, I will give it a shot.

I love the style of this game. It's number 11 of the year for me, so it just missed out lol.

LOL. Everyone has a top 10, leave it to whatsacow to have a top 11. Always rebelling. Cool

No, I have a top 10. I'm just saying this narrowly missed out for me.

I've only played the original Devil May Cry (though the third one is sitting in my backlog) but I've wanted to play this new one. It's coming to PS+ next month, so I'm pretty excited to try it. And yes, I love short games now. Give me 10 hours of concentrated awesome and I'm happy.

I'm going to try to do a list like this if I have time but it will be pulled from the games I played this year, and a lot of those didn't actually come out this year lol

Its probably the easiest game in the series, and if you have a large backlog, this will be completed the fastest.
