Forward from the author,
I’m not entirely sure I agree with a lot of the criteria for awarding the best of any game of any year. With so much software and hardware to select from, it’s kind of difficult to keep up with every game, let alone narrow down a list to just one. I haven’t played most games on most Top 10 lists simply because I hadn’t enough time to play all of them. I might be missing out on some quality experiences, according to gaming journalists, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t enjoyed the time I’ve spent with games I did choose to play this year.
My list isn’t about what is the best game compared to all the games released this year, but about the ones that I actually had time to play that I thought were fun. I might still go out and buy other games, based on recommendations from other blogs and such, but this is what I enjoyed, in no significant order of importance, my favorite 5 games of 2013.

DMC
At this point, my taste for action games has been somewhat diminishing over the last few years. I rarely play any platformers or action games like I used to, except for the occasional Mario game that Nintendo puts out, and of those, the only new game I tried this year was Super Luigi U.
DMC is no Mario game. DMC is however, a very linear designed combo based action game with a bit of platforming thrown in and wonderful sound and art design. It is possible to play through the whole campaign in one sit through, although it will take a dozen or so hours. I used to prefer to play long games that took a long time to finish, milking as much game as I could from my purchase, but now I tend to appreciate when a A-Level game with a complete package turns up and I can complete the whole thing on a weekend. This game also freshened up the image of an older franchise, which was pretty daring considering the backlash from fans. I enjoyed the new direction. I’m looking forward to whatever next game Ninja Theory makes, or if a DMC2 will ever be made. The game was released early in the year, and it still left a pretty good impression on me. I’ll give it 5-Stars.
Conclusion: This game revitalized my interest in action games and platformers. I look forward to playing Metal Gear Revengence and Bayonetta 2.
