Happy Friday Pixlbit! So is anyone else having problems remembering to write “14” in dates instead of “13”? It’ll pass…sometime in February. Anyways it is Friday, which means another Quick Hits Blog. This blog will probably be short because I had a couple of blog posts this week, but hey I like writing these editions, so shall we begin?

I thought for this edition of Quick Hits we’d have an audio theme. Sound good? (Get it, SOUND good? *insert sitcom laugh here)

Chris Loves Him Some Podcasts

I do love me some podcasts, and I have a few I listen to but I want to know if you good folks know of any good video game podcasts or podcasts that are similar to the ones I listen to. Currently in my video game podcast rotation is Cheapassgamer, Weekend Confirmed, and I’m trying out Super Bestfriendcast.

I tried Allgengamers again, but I still don’t like their format. Too many people want to talk, and the presentation is spotty. I follow two of the hosts on YouTube and I enjoy their channels, but I’m not a fan of their show.

If you have any podcasts that you might like, let me know, I’d like to have a couple of new shows for 2014.

Chris’ Album of the Week

So since one of my goals for 2014 is to listen to and rate everything in my iTunes library, I decided to add a new section to my Quick Hits blog with an album that I listened to this past week. It could be a mixtape, or an actual release that I bought for a track or two. I thought I’d dedicate maybe a paragraph or two towards this album.

For this week, I decided to cover The-Dream’s IV Play.

I purchased this album during one of Google Play’s $1.99 sales. I bought quite a few albums for the price of one new release, and I didn’t get to listen to this album until New Year’s Day when I had the iPod playing while I was playing some games.

My overall thoughts about the album are that there weren’t any memorable songs until the last song. Everything else seem to blend together, and the overall themes are obvious since the album is called “IV Play.” It almost seemed cliché for an album like this, where the artist took the same ideas from other “R&B” albums and tried to put a hook to it.

Overall I’m not a big The-Dream fan, and could explain why I didn’t care for this album, but if you’re a fan, give it a listen.

Chris’ Audiobook of the Month

One of my goals is to read more, and I do plan on reading print books, but I also like Audiobooks so I can enjoy books while walking, working, or anything else that begins with a W.

I found about this book because of the show Haven on SyFy. I found a couple a couple of years ago and started listening to it, but stopped (I think this was around the time of the Hunger Games Trilogy), but I'm going to start it up again today.

Chris and his Smart Playlists

So every year I have a Smart Playlist of all the songs I like for that year

This is 2013’s.

2014's. Hope it becomes bigger than 2013

These songs make it to the iPod rotation, and since I like these songs there really isn’t a lot of skipping songs while the iPod is on shuffle. 2014 is starting out strong with 32 tracks that I enjoy, including half of an album I bought a couple of years ago, didn’t care for, but after listening to it again, I really enjoyed. Here’s to 2014’s Smart Playlist being bigger than 2013!

Ok the next item in QH, isn’t connected with the audio theme but I’m excited about it

Community Is Back! (Some spoilers. Skip if you haven’t seen it.)

Last night was the “Reboot” of Community with two episodes, which takes place in the future and the gang is back, but they all have different jobs but ultimately come back to Greendale. The one character missing is Pierce but after some of the stories about him I can see why he didn’t come back. Anyways I’m glad to see that Dan Harmon is back, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Greendale!

First Finds Of The New Year!

Game Stuff

So I’ve been picking up things here and there for the 3DS XL. Turns out I did need a case especially when I was figuring out how to keep it safe.

I picked up one of these cases, which is sturdy, and has some slots for games under the top.

I picked up a couple of extra styluses (is that the plural of it? Stylui? Stylusessesssss) Anyways the red squiggly lines are under the last two, so I’ll take Word’s proper spelling. I now need one of those wrist straps.

While getting my case I found a couple of used games at Toys R Us I wanted to play

I like Rockband because it’s exactly like the Rockband Unplugged game on the PSP, except the directional pad is a little small so I keep hitting the two side notes together which screws up my score. I haven’t tried Jam Session yet.

I got this as a gift. I’m not big on the LotR universe, but I do like gifts, and I will give this a try.

I decided to hit the GameStop on the way home today from checking out a couple of thrifts and I found some games

These were in that bin of $15 or less games. It sucks that GameStop tosses the cases but I did add a new puzzle game and a random Guilty Gear game that even the employee was shocked to see (especially for $2).

I also added Crackdown 2 to the 360 library, part of the “must owned” games for the system. Of course this now means I need to hurry up and complete the original Crackdown. I got an eShop card so I can buy a couple of Game Gear games so I can have that flashback to high school…and maybe Tetris from the original Gameboy.

This game is a freebie on the Google Play Store, and I’m really enjoying this game. This is a fun game where there isn’t any in-app purchases (at least I don’t think there are any),  the controls are simple, tap one side of the screen to shoot, and move the ship around by touch. I’ll cover it in my next blog.

I added the next freebie game on the 360 along with some DLC. I used my credit to pay for the bottom two DLC, and the top two are freebies.

And the first music pickups of 2014!

I hit the Goodwill where I found the gold mine of albums, and it looks like people caught on and bought the majority of records that were there. There were three small stacks and I managed to find some good stuff anyways.

I added a new Chicago and Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk

And The Supreme’s Greatest Hits.

Alright Pixlbit, it’s time for me to head out and walk around the neighborhood as part of my exercise.

That’s all for now, more later!

-Chris

Lovin those Vinyl, that's a good find. My mum would appreciate the Supremes one.

Thanks! I'm hoping that 2014 will bring more Goodwill finds like that.

Weekend Confirmed intrigues me 'cause it has ex1Uper Garnett Lee, but he used to infuriate me on the 1UP podcast 'cause he would take a position just to stimulate conversation. I wanted to hear his real opinions not fabricated ones just for the sake of generating interesting talk. It was funny though when Garnett and Shane went at it. That was fun.

RadioRadar is one of my favorite podcasts right now.

Weekend Confirmed seems like a good podcast because both hosts were talking about their different experiences with games like Gran Turismo and Forza and were quick to point out what bugged them about it. I enjoy this podcast but it's a little long for me so I listen to it in portions.

Thanks, I'm gonna give Radio Radar a try.

whoa that Supremes vinyl is sick.  that's the kind of stuff I need for my new turntable.

I played Arc Squadron but didn't love it.  It's cool though, and looks good.

I was shocked an album like that was still there. I figured eBay guy would snap up everything that isn't Christmas or Religious in that pile.

I'm surprised how good Arc looks, especially on a tablet. I do like the buttonless controls when flying

As a matter of fact, I think this is the first year I will remember to write the proper year pretty much immediately, because of how relieved and excited I am that the prior one is finished. lol

I don't listen to gaming podcasts too often. Only one I have listened to recently is Super Toolshed, but it's not really a gaming podcast per se, they just talk about video games sometimes, along with anime and other media, because the duo on the podcast is a TGWTG reviewer, Bennet The Sage, and his partner. There was a podcast on tgwtg.com that I listened to a while back that was dedicated to gaming, but I've forgotten what it is/was called.

When I do listen to podcasts, it's usually the Schmoes Know (Youtube movie reviewers) podcast on toadhopnetwork.com; that website may have a gaming podcast, I don't know. I've also listened to this one with porn stars talking about their jobs, Sex Squad, which was surprisingly pretty dull, and there's one called Vox Populi that features Sean Astin doing mostly political analysis I think. That last one sounds like an NPR program, in my opinion. I used to listen to the Adam Carolla podcast as well, but I haven't in a while. I really wish Loveline were still on the air with the Ace Man and Dr. Drew bouncing off each other, I loved listening to that in middle school when it came on 97.1 The Eagle late at night. I never owned my own TV, and we never had cable when I was growing up, but my little Magnavox boombox still managed to let me hear things I really shouldn't have. Laughing I actually first heard Schmoes Know when they appeared as guests on some earlier Carolla podcasts, so I guess it all comes full circle.

Looks like you had the same reaction to Google Play music sales as I did to Steam's Winter Sale. lol A lot of stuff for roughly the price of one thing. Sorry to hear about IV Play, though. Is it the type of R&B that heavily features chimes? I've always found R&B usage of that instrument incredibly corny and overdone. At least the title's a bit clever.

I need to start using Audible. I found a bunch of audiobook segments on Spotify's "discover" section in their 2013 recap I may want to listen to as well. Speaking of which, I thought that recap they did was really cool. If you search Google for "music in 2013," it should be a top result. Never heard of Haven, but I'm currently reading Mockingjay. It's still shaping up to possibly be my favorite of the trilogy. Hopefully, I can finish it today.

The only artist I recognize on your Smart Playlist is The Band Perry, and I don't recognize most of those songs. lol At least, as far as what the screen cap shows. I'd probably know some other ones you liked. What was the album you began liking?

I bought a similar pack of styluses and screen protectors for my DS long ago, or maybe it was a gift, I forget. That's a nice looking case, though. Also, holy crap, there's a Guilty Gear game on DS?! Why don't I own a copy?! And $2?! I need to get out to the local Gamestop when I go shopping for my TV!

Arc Squadron looks cool. That name reminds me of what a big deal Rogue Squadron II was when GCN first released. Memories.

I love Chicago, but aside from maybe the green ... devil-horned dog ... whatever that song was Judas Priest covered, I don't get a lot of Fleetwood Mac in my music diet. According to Spotify, London listens to them 166% or something like that more than anywhere else in the world. The Supremes are great, too.

Thanks for reminding me to exercise! Have a good walk, that's how I lost over 60 pounds since last year, just by walking 3 miles every day and keeping my calorie count to what my Noom app said it should be.

Super Toolshed? I'll give it a listen. I'm not into Anime, but if they go into that it's no biggie. I tend to listen to other podcasts as well, like The Adam Carolla Show which is hilarious (excepts he likes to mention Jimmy Kimmel, rant about how great a driver he is, and foods he hates a little too much). Adam and Drew also have a podcast together called the Adam and Drew Show, which is kind of like old Loveline but it's only an hour long.

I started to get into India.Arie's Acoustic Soul. When I first listened to it I liked her big hit and didn't really pay attention to the rest. When I started listening to the bottom half I really got into it.

Arc is a really nice looking game, controls, are good, but the story is cheesy. I never played Rogue Squadron because I never bought a Gamecube...I should find a Gamecube or an older Wii.

Love Chicago, and the horn sections of their songs. Big fan of Fleetwood Mac, and that's a crazy stat about London. Hopefully I can run into more of both bands' albums at the Thrift Stores.

Dude, major props on dropping 60lbs. I want to lose some weight, and listen to podcasts and audiobooks, and get some fresh air, and walking was the natural choice.

Adam and Drew what now? It's like I learn a new awesome thing every time I comment you. lol

And I might see if I like some India Arie, myself. She seems like a cool lady. A quick Bing search yielded some decent clips.

I rented Rogue Squadron II a couple times, and it was fun and looked great for its time. I need a new Gamecube controller, though, actually. Dammit, I just bought a TV.

I love horns in music in general. Ska is one of my favorite genres because of horn instruments.

And thanks, man. Now I gotta get back on the wagon, though. I'm still skinny, but I lost a lot of strength from being sick recently, and have definitely taken a few liberties with my diet this break. lol Have fun on your walks, they can really be therapeutic, I find.

Oh yeah Adam Carolla has a bunch of different podcasts on his Carolla Digital on iTunes. Adam and Dr Drew is one of my favorites along with the regular Adam Carolla Show, and Ace on the House (home improvement show with his friend Ray). I also listen to the Thursday epsiodes of Alison Rosen is Your New Best Friend (his news girl's podcast). Thursday's it's a roundtable with some of the people that work there and it's funny.

Love ska music. Got into it in college and I still have some Dance Hall Crashers, Save Ferris, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Reel Big Fish on my iPod.

Thanks, the walks are fun. At the end I sit by the water and people/duck watch. I'm almost done with my first book of the year because of my walks.

01/05/2014 at 01:57 PM

I knew about the network, I remember listening to Penn Jilette's Sunday School a while back, but I didn't know about the roundtable one. That sounds great as well. I knew about the other shows, they were on there when I last listened, and his wife had one about child rearing with his old female host at one point, I believe. Speaking of his home improvement stuff and his buddy Ray, there's a whole cable TV series I watched online a while back where he builds a house with all his friends and sells it for a million dollars.

I've heard of Dance Hall Crashers, but never really heard them that much. I'll need to listen to more of them. I love Save Ferris's cover of "Come on Eileen", The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are just great (everyone knows the one about knocking on wood, and "Rascal King" is of course the ACE Podcast's intro from when I listened), and Reel Big Fish's "Beer" and "Sell Out" are some of my favorite songs. I love Streetlight Manifesto, No Doubt, and others as well. If you've never heard a song called "Tallulah" by Company of Thieves, I actually first heard it on the radio station I manage, and it's one of my favorites for sure. Another band I like that isn't ska, but uses horns, is Foxy Shazam, whom I got on the same radio station when I was a DJ.

And I really gotta finish reading Mockingjay and exercise like I've been saying since forever ago this break, so you've got me beat so far. lol I wish there were a duck pond near my house. We do have a nice trail with a creek, though, and there's a (smelly) duck pond outside one of the dorms on my college's campus.

I heard something about that house, but I haven't seen that show. Ace on the House is funny because everyone makes fun of Ray for not owning a house.

Oh how did I forget No Doubt?! One of my small claim to fames while doing the summer intern at Disneyland is I drove by the house from I'm Just A Girl video. It's close to the park. One of my other small claim to fame's is that I saw the trumpet player from Save Ferris at the Cast Member trolly stop at the park. The trolly takes us to the Cast Member parking lot a couple of streets down from Disneyland. I'm going to check out those other bands you listened, and see if I can get hooked on some new music.

Gotta finish that book. Mockingjay was a good read when I listened to it while walking a couple of years ago. I couldn't wait to listen to my book, so while editing and uploading pictures for my new blog, I started listening to it, and I'm almost done with Disc 3. It's starting to pickup.

Super Step Contributing Writer

That's kind of messed up. Then again, I guess my generation is full of people that may not be able to finance a house, so maybe that's only messed up from my standpoint. I guess it is funny, since he can build houses, yet doesn't live in one. lol

Y'know, I've never actually seen the video for "Just A Girl." I didn't know you worked at Disneyland. One of my previous coworkers had been the Tigger for either Land or World, and his room was absolutely decked out in Tigger stuff. Awesome you got to meet a Save Ferris trumpeter as well.

Be proud of me, I read Mockingjay yesterday, finished House of Cards on my new TV last night, and actually managed to do a few push ups and crunches already this morning. lol

I don't think Adam does it to shame Ray, it's more of a running joke between them, and he does throw in a "Donate to the show so Ray can buy a house" disclaimer. Ray's a good sport about it, but I think Adam just wants Ray to have his own place.

Yup I spent two summers in the Disney College Program. Fun times, and one of my fondest memories was my first year there. I was at the Cast Member break room which was next to the Characters Break Room (they had their own special room), and the room I was in had a free Mortal Kombat 3 machine. I was playing to kill my break and Goofy minus the head came in and we played. I can proudly say Goofy pulled a Fatality on my character.

Oh No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom is all about Anaheim. When I got into the program, looking for that house was my first priority. I also get a laugh when waiting in line at the Matterhorn for the "Remain Seated Please..." comes on because of the album.

Awesome job on finishing the book, and doing some exercise! Haven't seen House of Cards yet (I'm one of the few who doesn't have a Netflix account).

I didn't realize how many comments long this sub-thread was already. lol That's good that he's getting Ray donations haha. So does Ray live with Adam the way Jason Mewes (Jay) lives with Kevin Smith (Silent Bob)?

That's pretty impressive (and funny) that Goofy beat you at something as violent as MK3. Even more impressive if he did it while still having the rest of the Goofy suit on, including the oversized hands!

I didn't know that about Tragic Kingdom. "Don't Speak" was a favorite song from my youth, partly cause it reminded me of sexy Gwen Stefani in the video, but I didn't pick up that album until late 2012 at Target for $5.

Thanks. I've shown my dad House of Cards, and he liked the episode he saw I think, and yesterday when I was just meaning to show my mom how good it looked on my new TV, she liked it so much she stayed to watch the episode! lol If you get the chance, it's a really good political drama.

Silver linings, you didn't like it, but the kiddos enjoy it. I wasn't too excited about the gameplay at first, but after a couple of plays, I'm liking it. It's not great, but worth the $2

I got my copy a few years ago.  I didn't pay $2 for it, but it was less than $10 and still worth the price.
