Playing Games on the Big Gameboy and Nexus 7

Happy Monday Pixlbit! I’m ready to go for another week, and so far I’m keeping with my 2014 Goals. I’m almost done with my first book of the year, as well as ripping some vinyl to iTunes, but more on that stuff in my Quick Hits blog. Today you good people are going to be caught up in What Chris Is Playing!

Since I got a new toy last week, most of my gaming will be about that system. Sound good? Cool, let’s get the party started!

Ok before I jump into what games I’ve been playing I have to cover the game I was most interested in yesterday

My Aztecs went into Allen Fieldhouse and beat Kansas. This snapped Kansas’ 68 game winning streak over non conference opponents, and continued SDSU’s 104 game streak of winning when leading with 5 minutes to play. It’s going to be fun when Kansas comes out to San Diego in two years.

I'm one proud Alum today, GO AZTECS!

Ok now for games

Guilty Gear Dust Strikers

I have to admit to you good folks, I’m not a big Guilty Gear fan, and I didn’t know what to expect from it, but I wanted to give it a try because I liked the PSP Guilty Gear game. Well this game was different. It was set up like Playstation All-Stars and Super Smash Bros.

There are a good number of characters to choose from. I decided to go with the Sol Badguy and I was off (his name is Sol Badguy, how do you not pick him?)

I do like how the game play was setup on both screens (usually there are four characters during the Story Mode). Controls are ok, but I was more of a “Let’s slam on the B button” guy. I just wanted to get a feel for the game, before I try the different combos. Before I knew it I went through the entire Story Mode for Sol Badguy. I’m going to play through as many of the characters as I can.

Mario & Luigi Dream Team

Oh this game is quickly becoming my favorite game on the system. I started playing it a couple of days ago, and I think I am four hours in, and who would have thought I would enjoy an RPG. This style of game is perfect for me because it introduces new abilities within time, and I do find myself wanting to go battle the little monsters just so I can upgrade Mario and Luigi.

Super Mario 3D Land

When I bought this there were a handful of Mario games to choose from, but this one seemed interesting so this was my first 3DS Mario game…and second Mario game that I played (Super Mario Bros. was the first).

I’m taking this game slow, maybe playing a level or two a day, and I think I am around World 3. The last Mario game I really played was SMB 3 (never got into Mario 64) so this is a giant step from the NES games. I can’t wait to give the other Mario games a try.

Brain Age

This is one of the games I found in the GameStop cheap bin on the counter*

*There are a ton of DS games on the counter, many are under $5 and there are a lot of games. You might find something worth playing and not spend a bunch. This game I think came out to $1.90 something. Super cheap

I love the Smart as… game on Vita, and I started this up last night. It took a while to get it set up because I had no idea on how to erase the former owner’s save files. Once I got that going the battery was dying so I stopped. I’ll give this game a real chance later on today and give my thoughts about it.

The one thing I really like about this game so far is that I can hold the “Big Gameboy” like a book, and it switches to what hand I use to write with.

Wakedas

This is a game I bought on eShop for $2.00. This is an odd puzzle game that I really don’t know what I’m doing other than trying to get all the same color blocks to touch (maybe that’s the point of the game) and do it with as little moves as possible. I found myself replaying certain puzzles just so I can get a three star rating. Fun, casual game, that I’d like to see on a tablet.

In non “Big Gameboy” gaming there have been a couple of games I’ve been playing on the Nexus 7

Arc Squadron: Redux

I saw this game on the “Best of 2013” section and I thought why not give it a try. If I don’t like it, I’ll erase it. The game comes in at around 500mb so it’s a big download, but nothing like Madden.

I thought this was cool to see on a tablet

The story line is cheesy. You’re a janitor who’s the last person left to go and fight the bad guy (they never mention why there is enough ships for all the fighters AND the janitor). You are given a tutorial while your ship tries to make its way out of the bigger space ship and off you go. The controls are simple: you can touch anywhere on the screen to move your fighter, no directional pad, and the you tap on the opposite side of the screen to shoot.

Before every mission you’re given instructions by the on board computer and off you go!

At the end of every mission you earn stars based on performance, and for you achievement junkies, this game has them, so you can go nuts trying to shoot five in a row and what not (I really didn’t look at what I unlocked, that’s part of my 2014 Goals). You earn in game cash, and which you can use to upgrade your ship, and buy more powerful ships, which I think you can earn if you play the same missions multiple times.

Mission levels are laid out in a set order, so you can buy all the latest and greatest before you take on the end bosses.

The world’s are set up like Mega Man!

I’m having fun with the game, and let’s see if I can stick with it long enough to complete it.

Simpsons Tapped Out

The Community unlocked the all the bonus items for the 2013 Holiday game. My favorite from the prizes is this guy

YEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

The creators also included a special New Year’s storyline, which is fun, especially since I finished the Thanksgiving storyline right before Christmas, and I think I’m still on the Christmas Storyline. That’s what I get for checking my game every other day, these past couple of weeks.

Monopoly Bingo

I play a couple of rounds a day, but I play it like the grandmas at the Bingo Hall…multi cards! I swear if I actually checked my game everyday, I’d have twice as many tickets but I don’t. I do play maybe three or four rounds like this a day which is a good 20 minutes max. I did however win my first BINGO as a 1st place finisher which doesn’t mean much but I was excited for a good five minutes.

I also unlocked the Electric Company, which plays a different style of Bingo. I have to connect the left side plug to the right side and that’s how you Bingo the game. It’s tougher but the games last longer and apparently there is a huge payout.

Well Pixlbit, those are the games I’ve been playing. There have been some games on the 360 and PS3 I’ve played, but these are the games that I’ve spent the most time on. Have a good week!

That’s all for now, more later!

-Chris

I loved 3DL. Great game. It's too bad that they never made a sequel... Oh, wait, they called it 3DW and put it on a system very few people care about. :sic:

I don't know if I'll get a Wii U to try out the World. It looks like a good console, but it doesn't really offer much to me

gotta play Dream Team.  I want the Dream Team 3DSXL but just can't justify the expense while I already have a regular 3DS.

Dream Team is a lot of fun. I think you should get the Dream Team 3DS XL version, call it a "business expense" for Pixlbit, and then do a review.

I use to play Brain Age quite a bit.  I have 2 copies of that game.

Super Mario 3D Land looks nice.  I would like to get it.

2 copies? That's a lot of Brain Age going on in your house! Tongue Out. I need to finish setting that game up so I can get that going along start back up with Smart as... on the Vita.

I forgot that GG game was made to be a party fighting game like SSB. I don't know if that makes me want it more or less, but regardless, I guess I better check those Gamestop deals before I head back to college.

I'm thinking about checking out GameStop today to see what other "hidden gems" I can find in that basket for super cheap. The only thing that bugs me is that a lot of these games probably had complete cases that were tossed.
