* A post from 1UP dated 2-22-13*

Two important milestones occured for me today.

First, I turned 55 years old today!  *Feb 22, 2013*

Second: 2013 marks 15 years year since I bought my first home console and game.

And that game is my favorite game ever. And in my humble opinion it is...

The Greatest Game Ever

Surprised? No?

Years ago on 1UP when I wrote a blog about Metal Gear Solid being the greatest game ever, the Final Fantasy fanboys dragged me over hot coals and hounded me for days.

But I stood my ground then and I stand my ground now.

Metal Gear Solid was the first home console video game I ever played.

It's the game I hold all other games up against.

I wont ever have the same feeling towards a game as I do Metal Gear Solid.'

It's the reason I bought a Sony Playstation over a Nintendo 64.

MGS2 is the reason I bought a Sony Playstation 2 over an xbox.

MGS3 is the reason I started playing games online.

MGS4 is the reason I bought a Sony Playstation 3 over an xbox 360

MGS Portable Opps is the reason I bought a Sony Playstation Portable over a Nintendo...something

However I stop here.

I'm not buying a Sony Playstation 4

No, I wrote on 1UP way before the PS3 was released that the PS3 is the last console I will ever buy.

And I am sticking to that theory.

By the time I buy and actually play all the games I want for the PS3, I will be too old to play anymore games.

Plus, I still have all those Metal Gear games to replay over and over and over again.

I'm starting to sound like a broken record.

What? you dont know what a broken record is!

Hahahahahaha...maybe Im already too old!

When i saw ur blog title i knew the game will MetalGeraSolid, but i have to agree with u it's ana amazing game...and the reason i bought a MetalGearSolid4 was because of ur blogs in 1up, u made fall in love with this game ( so i played every MetalGearGame to date). And for the PS4 isee ur point PS3 got a great collection of games that we didn't play or heard about, but to tell u the truth is Hideo Kojima lunched a metal Gear title in PS4 i'm Sold.

Dragon, I'm glad I could help turn you on to Metal Gear with my old 1UP blogs. Yes, MGS4 is a great game and I will play it over and over.

You should have added before the hahaha, "I'm starting to sound like a broken record" again lol. But yes, amazing game, and this coming from a FF geek. Btw, I don't think I'll ever stop gaming. They'll have to bury me with the controller in my hand. haha

Cool,  hahaha, that would have been better...A long time ago, 1UP had a few hard core fanboys whom were very hostile to other gamers opinions.  I hope I am never too old but I have arthritsis and QTE in a game is no fun!

You will never get to old for gaming.  It keeps you young.  I bet several years into the next generation, something will come out that you will have to get.  There will also be 5-6 other games that you would have liked to play.  At that point you will talk yourself into the next gen.

Hey vinyl albums are making a comeback, so don't feel too old, a lot of us still know what a broken record sounds like! Not that I have any of the new ones, but we used to, and of course my parents still have a couple of their Beatles albums.

As for MGS, I'm not quite as big a fan as you (is anyone? lol), but I do prefer it to FF and JRPGs in general quite a bit. Rake them FF boys over the life-draining pack of cigarettes!

GrayHaired

03/02/2013 at 09:36 PM

Joe:  No vinyl for me. I remember too often how I would pay my hard earned money for a vinyl and the S.O.B. would jump and skip and crackle, and there was no refunds back in the day. Cds were a blessing from heaven for me.

Yeah, seriously the FF fanboys-girls gave me hell, but i didnt back down!

Hey, no vinyl here either, I'm just saying the "hipsters"  (young slang term for a group of people that like to point out that they're not mainstream ... or something, even I'm never sure what these labels mean, exactly) brought it back cause it has better sound quality or something. I would like to have some for the artwork on the sleeves, but they're expensive! And hey, all my music is on CDs, and I love 'em!

I will join you in your fight against the FF fanboys and girls if you ever need it, simply because I dislike that style of gameplay. lol Cool

03/03/2013 at 10:27 PM

Hey, now, I happen to be one of those FF fanboys!

But I would never diss someone over their choice of game, so long as they do me the same courtesy. :)

I tried to like this series, but I started with MGS4.  Prior to that all I had played was the original MG which was quite forward thinking.  I'm gonna play the others, I just haven't yet.

GrayHaired

03/02/2013 at 10:50 PM

Sneenlantern:  Yeah, starting with MGS4 might kinda spoil the series for you, but give it another shot with MGS 1 (buy it on the PSN store) and maybe you will like it a little better. The series isnt for everybody and had I not played it as my first game, I often wonder what wouldve been my first game and favorite series...probably Zelda on the N64.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

Sorry, but MGS4 is among the worst games I've ever played. MGS3 is one of the best games I've ever played. The difference? MGS3 lets me play it occasionally. It also has a story of it's own and isn't trying to make 3 completely insane games make sense. And when you have a legitimately awesome ending, you should not follow it up with 22 epilogues that are each more retarded than the last.

Whatsacow:  I thought I wasn't gonna be able to finish MGS4 because of the fight with Vamp. I just could not get it right, I was pissed. but I finally got it and I beat it.  Yeah, you could say MGS4 went a little over the top.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

I really liked this series. 1 was great. 2 was okay. 3 was mind blowingly awesome. 4 was good. Wouldn't call it the best series ever (that goes to Mass Effect, but then again I'm the fanboy there), but I can see how a lot of people think that.

GrayHaired

03/03/2013 at 09:56 AM

Casey:  Yeah, I figured  Mass Effect would give MGS series a run for its money!

I was not surprised at all. I remember your love of all things Metal Gear. I have to say I can't really disagree! I love all of it as well. I have all the Metal Gear Solid action figures. Except for Liquid Snake and Psycho Mantis. I recently picked up a digital graphic novel of MGS for the PSP. If you don't have it I think you should find it. Extremely cool. I also have books and graphic novels. It's all good. Maybe someday a movie? Come on now,Kojima San...it would be so epic!

GrayHaired

03/03/2013 at 09:33 PM

Wayde:  Wow, I remember those figurines and I remember K-B toys having the Pyscho Mantis...I do have the digital graphic novel, I just dont have a PSP at this time...A movie would be epic.....but Hollywood has a way of ruining video games.

Serraxor

I was glad to play Metal Gear Solid "1" after so many people said it was so amazing. For the longest time, I only had an N64, so catching up on PSone titles was one of the first things I did when I got my own income. This was one such game. Good times.

I'm on the fence with the PS4 as well... I feel like the gamer time forgot already, never mind the next gen....

GrayHaired

03/03/2013 at 09:36 PM

Serraxor: That is probably why I love the game so much...nostalgia. It brings back many good memories of a time when video games were all new and fresh for me...a new adventure and world had just opened for me with video games.

Im in no hurry to buy yet another next-gen video game console

I'm moving in both directions,as far as consoles go. Can't wait for the PS4 to arrive. Yet I finally bought a Wii last month. I even want to get one of those retro trio consoles. The one with a slot for NES,SNES,and Genesis games. You can get the cartridges dirt cheap. So why not? I know how you feel about nostalgia. MGS makes me feel it every time. Another recent purchase of mine was The Twin Snakes for GameCube. I love that one.

GrayHaired

Wayde:  I have MGS TS and I did enjoy it but not near as much as the original MGS.  I dont plan on getting a PS4....but of course when they release a new Metal Gear for it...what will i do?  hahahah

SanAndreas

03/03/2013 at 10:29 PM

I started with Metal Gear on the NES myself. It was a great game for its time, and I enjoyed The Twin Snakes on Gamecube and the HD collection. I can respect your love for MGS, because it is the same love I hold for... Final Fantasy VII!

I'm in no hurry to get a PS4, what with stuff like Tales of Xillia coming down the pipeline still, but if they can bring some great RPGs to the PS4 I'm in!

And I know have purchased mgs3 at least 4 different times.  The initial release, subsistence, mgs collection, and the hd collection.  Maybe it is the greatest game of all time.

I started with MGS4.  Yeah I thought it was a little much at the end but I still really enjoyed it.  I played Metal Gear Solid on PSP and just got through the boss battle with the guy in the tank in the snow and started the next level but I got distracted and put it down after that.  I have to go back and finish, I was lovin it at the time and have no idea why I put it down.  Xbox live has 2 and 3 on sale together for 9.99 and I had to buy it.

GrayHaired

03/05/2013 at 09:00 PM

Angel:  wow, MGS4 is a rough one to start with because the controls are so good and then having to switch back to the PS1 controls for MGS....wow, anyway, It's a wonderful series that I plan on playing for a long time.

Temperance

It's difficult to draw that line in the sand and say no more.  You have to be mentally prepared for that, to know exactly what it is you're giving up.  You know that Metal Gear is going to continue on, and I can only imagine how bittersweet it will be for you to let it go.  Still, I understand why this needs to be done.  It's something that I've thought about myself, and there's a good chance I might be joining you on that course of action.

Anyway, coming back to the here and now, I still need to get the HD collection.  I only have two games from the series in my library (the first on the NES and Twin Snakes on the GameCube) and I really want to play more of the series, especially the original MSX games that are on the HD set.  I also want it for Peace Walker as another game to play online.

That said, I wasn't able to appreciate Metal Gear Solid the first time around (even though I went and bought all the action figures!).  I played and completed it, but that was about it.  I was playing through games at a rapid pace back then, and short games came and went in an instant.  I'm glad that I bought the Twin Snakes, though, because it gave me another opportunity to spend quality time with the game and the series.

Temperance:   I should have explained, its looks like I am saying I am gonna be to old to game, when actually it's gonna be a finacial thing, I will retire in about 10 years and I need money for more important things other than a new console.

Twin Snakes is a good game, i just didnt like the lack of original music. I do still play it, its just not one of my fav...MGS games.
