BaD: Top 10 RPGs of All Time!

Hey guys, I've had a BaD day. I had an exam. Then the last boss in Demon's Souls crushed my spirits. Actually, that's all that was wrong. It wasn't that BaD, really. Bilby and I played Dragon's Crown, and that was fun. She seemed to enjoy kicking me.

Anyway, RPGS! I'm going to be doing two a day so I can put out a top 10 list every week.

10. ANACHRONOX

Anachronox is all about charm. It's a Noir Cyberpunk Comedy JRPG with adventure game elements developed by some of the guys who made Deus Ex. Yeah. It's also freakin hilarious, with a cast of truly memorable characters that include: A superhero who turned to alcohol when his comic series was cancelled, your mortally wounded secretary whom you digitalised and she hates you for it, and a sentient planet. Those are just your party members.

The only problem is the cliffhanger ending. The game didn't sell enough copies to garner a sequel, so we're left forever wondering WTF happened.

Still, a game this funny and unique deserves to be remembered, and it feels like it's merging the best bits of Final Fantasy's gameplay with someone who has a very similar mind to Tim Schaffer.

9. The Witcher 2

The word Mature gets tossed around a lot, and usually it just means titties, gore, and cursing (*cough cough* Dragon Age *cough cough*). The Witcher 2 is different. Okay, it has more exposed flesh than most games I've seen. And a lot of swearing. And a lot of violence. But is also concerns itself with medieval life, political machinations, racism, bigotry, and consequence.

The choices in this game top that of any Bioware game, because it changes the entire second act of the game, meaning you go to a different town, get different quests, meet different people and miss large chunks of content depending on your choice.

It's deep. It's dark. It's fucking awesome. THE WITCHER 2!!!!

Wow, I've never heard of Anachronox. Now I'm going to try that out on GOG or something!

It's awesome! If you can get past the dated graphics and kind of slow start, you're in for a great game!

So glad to see Anachronox on here. I had randomly bought that on GOG because it was on sale for dirt cheap. I only played it a few minutes to make sure it worked, but I could tell it was gonna be good from that little amount of time.

Yep. It's absolutely insane, but freaking awesome. Any fan of JRPGs or Adventure games should play it!

This list is just going to make me want to play games that I probably don't have time for at the moment.  I am already itching to replay The Witcher 2.

It's an RPG list, so probably :p

The Witcher 2 was a surprise for me.  I didn't know anything about the series.  I went into GS and a friend told me she thought I would like it.  The package looked cool and it wasn't expensive, so I picked it up.  She was right, it's a damn good game.

It really is! If you're big on reading, I'd recommend the books. The short stories are really awesome, and the novels aren't half bad either.

I really want to play anachronox.  I own it and started it, but got distracted.

I have both of those. Anachronox on your recommendation actually.

I bought the Witcher 2 for 360 when it was brand new. Unfortunately I tried to start it right after finishing Xenoblade Chronicles and it didn't take.

The first hour of The Witcher 2 is meh. Some people hate the game until they get past the prologue. Stick with it, and in the options menu, turn difficult QTE's off. Learn to roll and drink potions before combat, and you should be ok.

Oh I intend to go back to it. Maybe I'll try again once I finish Tales of Graces F

"It's a Noir Cyberpunk Comedy" ... holy shit I want to play th .... "JRPG" GOD DAMMIT! Yell

Guess I will just have to learn to love the gameplay in those. So many interesting games I miss out on due to my turn-based combat/random battle aversion.

I agree with the "Mature" label getting thrown on decidedly immature, simply dirty things. The Witcher 2 sounds great.

Fair enough. Random encounters suck, but you are told when most fights are going to happen and where they are, plus there's no actual combat for like 40-50 minutes. It's almost like a point and click adventure with a JRPG attached.

I remember Ben doing a review on Anachronox and also loving the game. Definitly should check it out on Steam

Would you recommend to get the first Witcher before the second game?

Not really. The first introduces some characters, but the second is a unique story. If you want to know some backstory, read the books the game is based on. Otherwise, there's a codex system like Mass Effect. The first one has a really weird combat system that isn't a great deal of fun unfortunately.

Haven't the first and couldn't really get into Witcher 2. Loved the combat, just way it was set up didn't really interest me. I never felt like I was accomplishing much in that game if it makes sense.

How far did you get through? Also, what do you mean the way it was set up? Not trying to invalidate your opinion, I'm just interested is all.

I got around 6 hours in before I stopped playing. I never really felt like my character was getting too stronger or the upgrades were really improving me that much. Couldn't really get invested in the story either, that kind of fantasy isn't my thing.

Witcher 2 was on sale on Xbox Live recently. I almost bought it. I will get it sometime. I've always wanted to play it.
