6. Final Fantasy VI

I couldn't decide where this should go, so I put it at 6, since it's the 6th game in the series. Anyway. The Final Fantasy series was one of my first loves. I fell in love with Final Fantasy VIII after seeing the intro where squall gets his eye sliced, promptly causing me to fall in love with any character that has a scar like that. I then played the other games in the series and fell in love.

However, Final Fantasy games, and to some extent the JRPG genre in general, don't hold the same effect they used to. You see, I want my story and my gameplay to be connected, and in Final Fantasy, story and gameplay are like water and oil.

So why do I still like Final Fantasy VI? The bad guy wins. The world gets destroyed. That is fucking badass, and I've yet to see another game with the balls to do that. Kill a central character? Please. Kefka wiped out half the fucking world just because he could. He's a lot like the Joker, but in this story, the Joker wins.

Also, STEAMPUNK! I love me some steampunk. So yeah, I actually plan on playing this again. It's the only Final Fantasy game I want to revisit - with the possible exception of IX...

5. Mass Effect 3

A lot of you are probably wondering why I chose Mass Effect 3 over 2. Well, it's simple. Mass Effect 3 is better in damn near every way. The only problem I have is with the ending not being quite as awesome as I'd hoped. Still, if that's the only problem, you've got a fucking phenomenal game. And really, was Mass Effect 2's ending any better? I mean, what the fuck was that last boss battle? At least *SPOILER* Killing the Illusive man *END SPOILER* held weight.

Really, this was just an amazing ride. It was epic. It was emotional. The gameplay was finally GOOD, and the new weapon weight system made playing a vanguard BADASS! Tali gets drunk! I mean, who didn't piss themselves laughing when Tali was going on about the "Emergency Induction Port?"

It's a great game. It's a truly memorable experience. It's the best in the series.

Maybe you should have put spoiler warnings about what Kefka does? FF 6 was the first rpg I ever played, and still one of my favorites. I didn't like it that much at first. It was weird having to read all this text. (that probably sounds idiotic, but I was 12)

It's 20 years old. If they haven't played it, fuck em.

2 is still my favorite Mass Effect but I can respect 3. Drunk Tali really is a wonderful thing.

I was highly tempted to put 2, but I realised I'd only be doing it because everyone else hought it was the best.

I think the main reason 2's my favorite is because it's set up like a space heist. I really love heist movies/games and to build a highly specialized team and assign each one to their best role taking on this epic alien threat was amazing for me. Also liked how it had more areas than the Citadel to explore.

Yeah, I like that too. And I liked my ship better in 2. Damn reporter, get out of Grunt's room!

Actually she was in Zaeed's room. Javik was in Grunt's which was so fitting.

Didn't have either DLC.

I have never gotten around to getting into Final Fantasy 6 but I always start it up and hear the music and just sit there listening to it. Love the steampunk and the music. This is one game that I hate saying that I have never really played.

Don't worry. Most gamers have a list of "classics" they haven't come close to touching. i've never played Chrono Trigger, for instance.

Still, I highly recommend playing through this.

Yea sad to say it is the problem that most gamers have. I have started Chrono Trigger a million times and always forget to save. I beat the Final Fantasy 1 and really enjoyed the fact it didn't hold your hand. I really want to go through the whole series in order even though I don't think the order really matters. But I am weird about going in chronological order with some things.

Yeah my brother is the same haha. No, the final fantasy series are only really connected through themes.

Which I think is really cool. I really enjoyed rhetorical analysis of novels in highschool and themes are really cool to me. I may not be able to write them but I like recognizing them and analyzing them.

I am actually glad to see ME3 on this list.  I think that it had a good mix of what made the first two games unique and special.

My thoughts exactly. It also had the biggest and most awesome moments.

The gameplay and story are especially like water and oil for those of us non-JRPG gamers whos just rented FF for the pretty cutscenes. "Oh goddammit, more gameplay?" is not something I think often when playing a game, but it did happen ...

Yeah. I remember screaming for them to stop with the random encounters!

dammit, I love Mass Effect 3.  game of the generation for me, hands down.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

It is a damn good game, but not the game of the generation for me. Not quite...

FF6 is one of my top five favorite games of all time.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

It's in my top 6! So... it's close! Anyway, that's great! It's a wonderful game. I know I've read this before, but what else is on that list?

Pac-Man, FF6, Animal Crossing (GameCube), Super Mario Kart (SNES), Namco Museums vol. 1 to 5 (PSOne).

Cool. Very unique list!

I need to play more of it, but I do agree that FF VI is pretty good from what I played.

And since I can't stop making questions in this blog, because Mass Effect 3 is in Origin instead of Steam, does the save file from the Steam games pass to Origin? You know, because you can carry save files from one game to other.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

02/05/2014 at 08:06 AM

Yeah man. Even if you pirated the game it'd still pick them up, because it just searches the computer for the files, not where they originate from. You can even just download a save with all of the choices which is kind of cool if you're like me and can't stand replaying ME1.

I never got into the first Mass Effect but I picked up the 3 game set regardless. With everything I've got to play though I don't know if I'll ever have the time to play 3 Mass Effects in a row.

lastly, you've never played Chrono Trigger? You better get on that mmmkay?

Blake Turner Staff Writer

02/05/2014 at 09:12 AM

Honestly I'd skip the first one. Sure, some of the choices it makes for you are kind of sucky, but the first one is just so fucking boring it's not worth it.

Yeah I know. I've got a SNES emulator, and I've played Chrono Cross,

I couldn't finish Chrono Cross. The battle system just made me nuts. I've played Trigger 3 times though. That game is so much fun.

I played Cross when I was quite young and honestly don't remember a great deal.

I'd place FF6 higher but I respect ME3 place.

I preferred Mass Effect 2 over part 3, but I loved them both, so it doesn't really matter which one you put on here. The main reason I liked 2 better, the loyalty missions. Like a commenter above said, it felt like you were on a "hiest", putting your crew together and then completing the mission. The loyalty missions are pretty awesome.

One suprising thing that I loved about ME3 was the multiplayer! I didn't think I would like it at all, but I played the hell out it. And then you could buy boxes with randomly generated "loot" with points from multiplayer that contained recovery items, combat bonuses, new weapons to new character classes. Pretty awesome.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

02/05/2014 at 09:10 PM

Yeah, I liked the loyalty missions in two, but I also felt everywhere looked a bit samey too, and felt so goddamn repetitive. There was a bit more variety in 3, and a real sense of danger.

Also, yeah! The multiplayer surprised me!

I really need to start playing these Mass Effect games. I own I think 3, but I saw two yesterday for super cheap but I didn't pick it up.

I really need to play Final Fantasy VI.  I've put that off for too long.

I still think Mass Effect 1 is better than 2 & 3.  I like ME1 more for the story.  ME2, I like for the characters, and ME3 has the best combat.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

02/06/2014 at 09:11 PM

Really? I actually hate 1 so much I haven't played it again since. It just drags on far too much.

jgusw

02/06/2014 at 09:24 PM

Only the Citadel drags.  I know where everything is, so I fly through it.  The rest of the game is really short if you stay off the extra missions.  There is a lot of extra stuff that can be ignored if you're not into the backstory and details.  Mass Effect 2 is a longer game if you want to keep everyone alive at the end.

Blake Turner Staff Writer

02/07/2014 at 06:48 AM

Mass Effect 2 may be longer, but it doesn't feel like it. And you're probably right. I end up quitting at the citadel every time I replay it!

I played through these games over 30 each.  I used to think ME1 dragged on more.  At some point I realized ME2 did.  I started ME2 recently and it just takes longer to get going in that game.  You're forced to do things in the 2nd game that you don't have to do in the 1st.  Because of the focus change from experience points to upgrades, you spend a lot of time acquiring upgrades and the money and the materials you need to make them.  You can't really upgrade at all until you pick you Mordin.  In ME1, you don't have that.  You can stick to your main missions and you'll upgrade enough and pick on the appropriate upgrades along the way.  You don't even have to go to shops.  ME1 does have more dialog with other characters (off ship), but if you know what they say, you can skip through that stuff in seconds.

Probably the biggest thing that keeps ME1 shorter, is the fact that you're not dragged down with making everyone your friend to keep them alive at the end of the game.  I'm not a big fan of the loyalty missions.  It's probably from doing them so many times.  It also didn't help that most of them are barely a cameo in the 3rd game.  It makes me think, "Why am I spending an extra 8 hrs to make them loyal to save them for?"  One of my friends finished ME2 just under 6 hrs.  Sadly, his whole crew died. Laughing

FF6,aye? Incidentally it's my favorite Final Fantasy too,Blake. High 5! Still need to get Mass Effect 3 before I have an opinion on it. "Loved" Mass Effect 1 & 2 though. I'm kind of the weirdo though. As hard as it is to confess, I enjoyed ME 2 marginally more than ME1 despite the fact the sequel was more "stream-lined". (And whenever there's stream-lining you have the dissenters screaming "dumbed down".)

Blake Turner Staff Writer

02/06/2014 at 10:33 PM

I like Mass Effect 2 a HELL of a lot more. The first one dragged, and the combat was terrible. They maybe streamlined a bit too much, but it was definitely an improvement. As for 3, I feel it strikes a better balance.
